In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Aaron Jagdfeld, CEO of generator company Generac , warned that the pressure on the power grid is only going to increase, burdened by a massive crop of new data centers and more severe weather. Although the U.S. is adding more solar and wind power, Jagdfeld noted that these sources are "intermittent by their nature," and the increased demand for technology like artificial intelligence and electric vehicles will continue to weigh on the grid. Another deadly storm, Milton, hit Category 5 status on Tuesday and is predicted to ravage Florida's Tampa Bay region on Wednesday. I mean, the air temperatures are warming, the water temperatures are warming," Jagdfeld said. "We can debate what caused it, but I think the reality of it is the, the outcome is more extreme weather."

The third quarter is a key time for extreme weather events. An El Niño weather pattern is widely expected for 2023. "Following three years of La Niña, climate scientists expect 2023 to have El Niño conditions with near-100% certainty given current signals," Karp said in a note to clients last month. Insurers are also among the stocks to typically move in relation to extreme weather events. This year should be a fairly typical one for hurricanes, as El Niño is typically linked to a less severe season.

Backup Power: A Growing Need, if You Can Afford It

“The neighborhood has lost power a whole lot, but I have not,” Ms. Dudley said. Ms. Dudley estimates that her utility bills are about $2,300 a year lower because of that investment and her geothermal system. Generator companies believe that growing electricity usage and the threat of outages will keep demand high for their products. Many people also bought generators because of severe weather, including an extreme heat wave in 2021 in the Pacific Northwest, and winter storm Uri, which caused days of blackouts in Texas and killed an estimated 246 people. “People are thinking about this,” Mr. Jagdfeld said, “in the context of the broader changes in climate and how that may be impacting not only the reliability of power but the things that they need that power provides.”
