London CNN —Pernod Ricard is selling most of its wine brands, as wine consumption is falling globally, and will instead focus on growing its champagne and premium spirits labels, including in the United States. The deal comes after wine consumption globally hit a 27-year low last year, according to an estimate by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), an industry group. “The divestment (by Pernod Ricard) makes sense as the segment has been underperforming for a while now and the global wine market is still challenging,” Sarah Barrett, the executive editor of Wine & Spirits Daily, a US-based trade publication, told CNN. Pernod Ricard is also doubling down on American whiskey. Falling wine consumption globally has collided with severe pressures on wine production, forcing many vineyards in Europe to close their doors.

CNN —Two lion brothers, including one with an amputated leg, were spotted making a record-breaking night swim through treacherous waters in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. Researchers believe that the nearly mile-long (1.6-kilometer) crossing of the crocodile-infested Kazinga Channel is the longest documented swim by lions. They were likely in search of females after losing dangerous fights to another group of male lions — and to avoid humans while doing so, according to the researchers. Alex Braczkowski/Griffith UniversityAt the end of January, the team witnessed Jacob and Tibu enter into two vicious fights with other male lions within 48 hours. “There was terrific incentive to get across.”Looking out for one anotherPacker’s research has shown that when male lions stick together, they sire more cubs.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An influencer who staged a California plane crash to make a YouTube video of himself parachuting to safety was sentenced Monday to six months in federal prison for obstructing the investigation by destroying the wreckage, the U.S. Justice Department. Trevor Daniel Jacob, 30, an experienced pilot and skydiver, pleaded guilty in June to one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation. After landing, he hiked to the crash site and recovered video from the onboard cameras, the government said. The plane was later cut up, and the parts were disposed of in trash bins. Jacob, of Lompoc, California, had his pilot license revoked by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2022.

The Berkshires, in western Massachusetts, have long encouraged contemplative walking. Now, a new long-distance path, the High Road, will provide a slow-paced, inn-to-inn experience that will eventually traverse the entire region. Behind the effort is the Berkshire Natural Resources Council, which is using existing preserves as footholds for the route. Along with providing easy access to pristine wilderness, the High Road will showcase the region’s cultural highlights, allowing walkers to incorporate afternoons at destinations like Tanglewood and Jacob’s Pillow. The Berkshire Natural Resources Council has a trail map of the High Road’s first section on its website.

But one country has just triumphed over all the rest in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023, the world’s biggest and most established wine competition, now in its 20th year. It was a victory for the New World as 10 Australian wines were named Best in Show, more than any other country. Italy had seven Best in Shows – all reds from Tuscany and Piedmont – while Portugal (three Best in Shows) – excelled in Port and Madeira. It’s Croatia – Slovenia makes wonderful wines, really really good – Slovakia, all around there.”Judges at the awards tasted up to 90 wines a day. CNN —Taylor Swift fans have rallied in support of a fellow fan who was killed early Saturday after leaving Swift’s Houston concert. Jacob Lewis, 20, was hit and killed by a drunken driver after The Eras Tour show at NRG Stadium in Houston on Friday night. Karyn and Steve Lewis, Jacob’s parents, told CNN that the money donated will go toward a scholarship for theater students in the Katy, Texas, area. “If we could have him back that would be our choice but that’s not an option so we need to move forward and do what we can do to support others,” Steve told CNN. “We’ve gotten support from people who don’t even know us and now we’re able to honor him in a special way,” Steve said.
CNN —A 13-year-old in Ohio has died after “he took a bunch of Benadryl,” trying a dangerous TikTok challenge that’s circulating online, according to a CNN affiliate and a GoFundMe account from his family. Jacob Stevens was participating in a TikTok challenge with some friends at home when he ingested the antihistamine, the family donation account states. Overdosing on Benadryl can result in “serious heart problems, seizures, coma, or even death,” the US Food and Drug Administration said in a 2020 warning to the public about the deadly “Benadryl Challenge” on TikTok. In a statement to CNN, TikTok said, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family. At TikTok, we strictly prohibit and remove content that promotes dangerous behavior with the safety of our community as a priority.
‘Jacob’s Room’: A Young Man Etched in Absence

James Joyce ’s “Ulysses” was published in Paris, and T.S. Because of this, Virginia Woolf’s novel “Jacob’s Room,” which was also published in 1922, hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. That some of her later novels—“To the Lighthouse” (1927) and “The Waves” (1931)—are perhaps even more accomplished hasn’t helped. Yet, it was in “Jacob’s Room” that Woolf first experimented with the episodic narrative she would use in “To the Lighthouse.” The novel also contains some of Woolf’s most startling sentences. One character observes that “each word” fell from Jacob’s mouth “like a disc new cut.” That may not always be true of Jacob, but it is of Woolf’s novel, which is full of such coins.
