CNN —Cambridge Dictionary has put it out to the universe, naming “manifest” as its word of the year for 2024. “That in a way is setting that idea, that intention in the back of my mind,” she added. Taken from Latin and French, in English the word “manifest” originally meant “easily noticed or obvious” before it started to be used as a verb meaning “to show something clearly.”In the early 20th century it started to be used to mean “to make something happen by internalizing it, intentionally or unintentionally,” according to Cambridge Dictionary. “In 2024, the word manifest jumped from being mainly used in the self-help community and on social media to being mentioned widely across mainstream media,” it wrote. Earlier this month, Collins Dictionary named “brat” its word of the year, defining it as someone “characterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude.”

CNN —A shiny metal likeness of England soccer captain Harry Kane has become the latest statue of a sports star to face criticism for failing to capture the essence of its subject. “A real proud moment for me to go back to where my life in football began and unveil a statue. The juxtaposition makes the differences between the real life Kane and his bronze likeness amusingly apparent, with many questioning whether Kane could truly be impressed by the work. CNN —Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney has hit out at what she calls “fake” pronouncements on female empowerment in the entertainment industry. “This entire industry, all people say is ‘women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening. “I’ve read that our entire lives, we were raised — and it’s a generational problem — to believe only one woman can be at the top. CNN —An award-winning university building that won a prestigious architecture prize is set to be demolished less than 30 years after it was built, sparking widespread criticism. The Centenary Building was built for Salford University in northern England and won the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize, which names Britain’s best new building, in 1996. However, the university has confirmed to CNN that it will be knocked down after sitting empty for several years. “I simply cannot support the demolition of a building that is only thirty years old. “By definition they are the best buildings of the year, and to list at least one modern building a year, after due consideration and maybe a little time, would not seem unreasonable.”

CNN —Archaeologists have identified the site of an ancient battle in what is now Iraq by comparing historical accounts with declassified images from US spy satellites. Despite the fact that the battle marked a significant victory for Arab Muslims and enabled their expansion beyond Arabia, its precise location was not previously known. A map shows the newly discovered location of al-‘Udhayb and al-Qadisiyyah in southwestern Iraq — as well as the wall/canal linking the two sites — and the likely location of the Battle of al-Qadisiyyah. The Battle of al-Qadisiyyah saw a smaller Arab Muslim army defeat a much larger force from the Sasanian Empire, which dominated the region. After a few failed attempts, this was their “first really significant victory” in attempts to expand beyond Arabia, Deadman said.

Pompeii is limiting its daily visitor numbers
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Authorities at Pompeii in southern Italy are introducing a daily limit of 20,000 visitors as part of efforts to protect the ancient site. The measure, which will come into force from November 15, will see the introduction of personalized tickets bearing the name of each visitor, according to a statement from the Pompeii archaeological park published Friday. Pompeii has received an increasing number of visitors in recent years. The site has long been a popular tourist attraction, but the sheer weight of numbers has caused increasing problems at the site as visitor numbers rose from under 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 3.9 million by 2019. “Grande Pompei,” as the project is called, is a “parco diffuso” or scattered archaeological park, incorporating the archaeological area of Pompeii itself, as well as villas at nearby Boscoreale, Oplontis (in the modern town of Torre Annunziata) and Stabiae, at modern Castellammare di Stabia.

CNN —A pair of rare Ming Dynasty fish jars dating from the 16th century have sold for £9.6 million ($12.5 million) at auction, smashing their estimate of £1 million ($1.3 million). “This remarkable result makes it the highest priced Chinese work of art sold at auction worldwide this year,” said Sotheby’s. Part of the lot’s appeal was the fact that this was the first ever appearance of a complete pair of fish jars with covers at auction. There is only one other covered pair known to be maintained together, and they are held by the Musée Guimet in Paris. Tristan Fewings/Getty ImagesIn addition, there are only three known single jars that still have covers, all of which are in private collections.

CNN —An emperor penguin surprised locals when it appeared on a beach in Australia after making an epic journey of thousands of miles from its home in Antarctica. Ocean Beach is more than 2,200 miles due north of Antarctica, suggesting the penguin probably swam significantly further to reach Australia. “It stood up in the waves and just waddled straight up to us, an emperor penguin, he was probably about a meter high, and he was not shy at all,” he added. But as Earth’s temperature rises as a result of greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, sea ice is at risk of disappearing. This widespread “catastrophic breeding failure” is the first such recorded incident, according to the report, and supports grim predictions that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be “quasi-extinct” by 2100 as the world warms.

CNN —A rare letter signed by three of the founding fathers of the United States is going on sale, and is expected to fetch up to $1 million when it goes under the hammer next week. “An important expression of the emerging American policy of free trade, likely the only available example of any letter signed by all three of these Founding Fathers, the men most responsible for the Declaration of Independence,” said Bonhams in a listing on its website. Bidding starts at $550,000, and the letter is expected to fetch up to $1 million when it goes under the hammer on November 12. Objects and artifacts linked to the founding fathers often prove popular at auction, attracting astronomical bids. “He found it peculiar that he could not think of any waltzes by Chopin that matched the measures on the page,” reads the statement. “Chopin famously wrote in ‘small forms,’ but this work, lasting about one minute, is shorter than any other waltz by him,” adds the statement. “Extensive research points to the strong likelihood that the piece is by Chopin,” according to the statement. This research included analysis by paper conservators who found that the paper and ink match those that Chopin normally used. The discovery of an unknown piece of work by Chopin has not happened since the late 1930s, according to the museum.

CNN —Police in Poland have launched an investigation after a collection of more than 100 Bronze Age artifacts surfaced unexpectedly in the northwest of the country. The discovery came to light when photos of the artifacts, including weapons, bronze spearheads, necklaces and shield bosses, were shared with the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in the city of Szczecin, according to a statement from the West Pomeranian Police, published Friday. The historical association then handed the artifacts over to the Provincial Heritage Protection Office in Szczecin, which reported a crime of finding treasure without permission. Police said those responsible for illegally excavating the artifacts could face up to eight years in prison. The artifacts have been transferred to the Provincial Heritage Conservator’s office in Szczecin, which will decide where the items will ultimately be housed.

Paddington Bear has been given a real British passport

London CNN —Paddington Bear, probably fiction’s best-known Peruvian, has been granted a passport by authorities in his adoptive country of Britain. Rob Silva, co-producer of the upcoming film “Paddington in Peru,” revealed the existence of the British passport in an interview with Radio Times magazine published Monday. In the film, the third in the hit series, the little bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) travels home to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy. The movie is inspired by the work of late children’s author Michael Bond, who created the character of Paddington Bear in 1958 book “A Bear Called Paddington,” which follows the adventures of a small orphaned bear as he travels from Peru to the British capital. “Paddington in Peru” follows his return to his homeland to visit his Aunt Lucy (voiced by Imelda Staunton) after he is issued with a passport.

CNN —Researchers have discovered a distant disc galaxy that has surprisingly similar characteristics to our own Milky Way, and it could change our understanding of how galaxies form. Early galaxies tend to join together and develop smoother shapes incredibly slowly, with our Milky Way taking billions of years to develop tidy structures, the researchers said. The rotation and structure of the galaxy were observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope in northern Chile. “Finding further evidence of more evolved structures would be an exciting discovery, as it would be the most distant galaxy with such structures observed to date,” Rowland said. “ALMA also reveals details finer than earlier telescopes.”Blain said more research is needed before scientists change their understanding of galaxy formation.
