AdvertisementMarc Andreessen discussed Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency on Joe Rogan's podcast. Cut, baby, cut, Marc Andreessen says of Elon Musk's DOGE cost-reduction effort. "It is time to carve this government back in size and scope," the Silicon Valley investor said during a recent appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast. The VC specifically referenced a text exchange that Musk sent then-CEO Parag Agrawal shortly after being appointed to Twitter's board. "Imagine that statement being applied to the government," Andreessen said, referencing Musk's "What did you get done this week?"

And while these larger social media platforms still dwarf Bluesky, the startup now has more than 22 million users and is not showing any signs of slowing down. Bluesky had experienced a previous surge in July 2023 after X, then still named Twitter, temporarily limited the number of posts users could read per day. Just days before Musk officially took over Twitter, the Bluesky team publicly unveiled more details about their project and rolled out a waitlist for the Bluesky app. Despite Bluesky starting as a side project within Twitter, the startup has lost its last connection to the original micro-blogging app. Bluesky is looking for ways to support the users "who are actually the ones making the network awesome and fun," Wang said.

Bluesky has "blown past" its user growth projections so much that it's racing to get more servers to keep the site running smoothly, the social media platform's chief operating officer has said. AdvertisementThe social media network has surpassed 21 million users, up from 13 million in October, as X users have left in droves and flocked to the platform. But CEO Jay Graber has some cautionary words for potential acquirers: Bluesky is "billionaire proof." Graber was referring to the way millions of users left Twitter, now X, after Elon Musk purchased the company in 2022. Bluesky now has over of 21 million users, still dwarfed by X and Threads, which Facebook's parent debuted in July 2023. Threads has roughly 275 million monthly users, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in October. Although Musk said in May that X has 600 million monthly users, market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates 318 million monthly users as of October.

Many new Bluesky users are praising the feeling on the site as being similar to "old Twitter." This week, the app shot to the top of Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store, and a Bluesky spokesperson told Business Insider it hit 18.3 million registered users. Advertisement"Consumers, time and time again, show us that they will put a brand in jeopardy if the leadership is associated with ideology the consumers don't care for," Lind told Business Insider. A spokesperson for Bluesky told Business Insider that the platform aims to give users more choice and offer creators independence from being locked into specific platforms. A few weeks ago, Bluesky had less than 1 million daily users in the US, "so the acceleration is tremendous," said David Carr, an editor at Similarweb.

Disgruntled X users are again flocking to Bluesky, a newer social media platform that grew out of the former Twitter before billionaire Elon Musk took it over in 2022. The platform resembles Musk's X, with a "discover" feed and a chronological feed for accounts that users follow. The platform gained 2.6 million users in the week after X was banned in Brazil in August — 85% of them from Brazil, the company said. About 500,000 new users signed up in one day in October, when X signaled that blocked acascounts would be able to see a user's public posts. Despite Bluesky's growth, X posted after the election that it had "dominated the global conversation on the U.S. election" and had set new records.

Elon Musk's ownership has shifted X's political stance, affecting Democratic ad spending. X switched political ads back on last year as it looked to recoup lost revenue after a brand exodus. AdvertisementWhile some Democratic political advertisers — including Kamala Harris' presidential campaign — have stopped spending on X altogether, a small number are holding firm. It ceased taking political advertising in 2019 under former CEO Jack Dorsey; Musk reversed that decision last year. The research firm EMARKETER predicted that political ad spending in the US will top $12 billion this year.
