As a Syrian “foreign fighter” in his early 20s, Jolani crossed into Iraq to fight the Americans when they invaded the country in the spring of 2003. For its part, the Biden administration is taking no chances over whether Jolani has the capability to manage the threat from ISIS. What to do about those US forces in Syria is a decision that Trump will likely face as he assumes office. Jolani was fighting against the Americans in Iraq then, so he is presumably aware of this instructive history. In Libya in 2011, a US-led NATO bombing campaign contributed to the fall of another brutal secular dictator, Moammar Gadhafi.

Rebel fighters claimed they captured the Syrian capital of Damascus early Sunday as government forces loyal to the country's president, Bashar al-Assad, were routed in a mater of days. The rebels' claim would open a new chapter in the 13-year-long civil war that has ravaged the ancient land. The Syrian government has detained thousands at the military prison on the outskirts of Damascus, according to Reuters. HTS rebels claimed Saturday that they had captured the city, a day after also claiming to have seized the city of Daraa. A 2020 ceasefire left Assad in control of 70% of Syria, but some 6.8 million Syrians have fled the country.

Syria CNN —The goal of Syria’s rebel coalition, as it wrests another major city from government control this week, is ultimately to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar al-Assad, according to Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, the militant leader of the main group driving the country’s armed opposition. Syria’s opposition forces are decentralized and made up of different ideologies, albeit united by a common goal of upending the Assad regime. As CNN sat down to interview al-Jolani, news broke that forces under his command had captured the city of Hama. Al-Jolani told CNN that incidents of abuse in prisons “were not done under our orders or directions” and HTS had already held those involved accountable. “We are talking about a larger project – we are talking about building Syria,” Al-Jolani continued.

His mission was to establish Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, Jabhat Al Nusra. Sharaa is now commanding thousands of men in an armed rebellion threatening to topple the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “This new formation has no relation to any external party,” he said at the time, distancing it from his radical Islamist past. It was also the start of Jolani’s gradual transformation from the classic anti-West jihadist, to a more palatable revolutionary. Rebel forces entered the Syrian city of Hama and forced out government troops Thursday, in a development that may have significant consequences in the country's 14-year-long civil war. Military reinforcements being moved from Idlib to control Hama, Syria on Wednesday. The taking the city of Hama by HTS-led forces could prove pivotal in shifting the balance of the civil war. One feature of the battle for Hama — and the broader Syrian civil war — has been fierce aerial attacks from government forces. The air superiority of Assad’s forces — which have long received heavy backing from Russia and Iran — was on display Thursday before government forces left Hama.

And despite efforts by HTS to distance itself from al Qaeda, the US designated the group a terror organization in 2018, saying it evolved from the original group, Jabhat al-Nusrah. “As you know, they are formerly known as ‘Nusrah Front,’ an al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, but bottom line is: still a designated terrorist organization,” Ryder said Monday of HTS. Amid the renewed unrest in the country, roughly 900 US service members are deployed in Syria as part of the anti-ISIS mission. And on Friday, he said, US forces conducted a “self-defense strike near MSS Euphrates,” taking out a potential threat to the US base. Ryder said that was “completely unrelated to the ongoing situation in northwestern Syria.” He added that there have not yet been any US force posture changes in Syria.
