Why Toyota and Honda vehicles have such high resale values
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Toyota and Honda have at times been called boring: Honda by its own engineers, Toyota more famously by a chairman descended from the company's founder. But while they may not have the luster of, say, European sports cars, these two Japanese brands have enviably high resale values. Toyota has topped Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value list eight times since 2014, including the last four consecutive years. Another key for the automakers is that Toyota and Honda listen carefully to customers and try to build only what they think people will buy. "The market tends to have much greater demand than Toyota supplies up front, which keeps resale high, which keeps consumers happy, and the cycle continues on and on," said Tyson Jominy, vice president of data analytics at J.D.

A price war in China poses a threat to profitability. Amid the flurry of news, two themes stand out: the China threat and EV slowdown loom large for automakers. AdvertisementAnother EV price war threatens profitabilityIn China, the world's largest auto market, EV leaders BYD and Tesla are engaged in a bitter price war that initially weighed heavily on BYD's bottom line. The Chinese EV market is more competitive than ever, according the GM's Barra, who questioned the sustainability of a broader price war in the region driven by an uptick in Chinese EV startups selling inexpensive vehicles. Inexpensive Chinese EVs have long threatened the US EV market.

Read previewWe're getting closer to a cure for range anxiety, so why don't more people want an EV? This dip in demand is reflected in a stagnation in EV sales growth over the past year as companies adjust to a new crop of more practical green-car shoppers. Battery-powered cars accounted for a record 7.6% of all car sales in 2023, according to Kelley Blue Book, up from 5.9% in 2022. Affordability is also a key issue for today's electric car shoppers, an issue the industry has tried to address with lower sticker prices. But EV shoppers have found a new cost to angst over.

Tesla is having trouble wooing new EV shoppers

That's bad news for Tesla, especially as a yearlong slowdown in EV demand is beginning to impact the EV leader's sales. That's off from 55% share a year ago and nearly 80% market share back in 2020, according to Experian data. AdvertisementThat leaves a potential opening for traditional automakers at a time when the EV market is getting tougher. That's already helped the brand chip away at Tesla's market share. And at Ford, EV sales were up 61% in the second quarter, trailing only Tesla in sales so far in 2023.

However, Ford went 0 for 2 on Wednesday as an old enemy in warranty expenses returned to bite the Blue Oval. And it's an even more unfortunate setback because Ford management said on its April earnings call that the company has made "real progress" on its goal of making better vehicles. The best story at Ford remains Ford Pro , the unit that houses the company's fleet and commercial vehicles. But last quarter management said the business was tracking toward the higher end of the range, and that no longer appears to be the case. New York CNN —The most important carmaker in the world right now is the Chinese-owned, Warren Buffett-backed company that has Elon Musk in a pickle. That’s 1,300 miles in one go — hundreds of miles beyond the standard ranges for other hybrids on the market. One: Tesla is America’s best-selling EV, but it’s losing market share overseas to foreign competitors that can make their cars cheaper. China is the world’s biggest auto market, and BYD is its top seller, surpassing Volkswagen last year. In that exchange, Musk responds to an honest question about BYD rivaling Tesla with a smug laugh.

The consumer, making up 70% of the U.S. economy, is being hit by higher interest rates and sticky inflation. Consumer spending, also known as personal consumption expenditures (PCE), typically represents about two-thirds of the U.S. GDP. A new generation of electric car shoppers are looking for different options than their early-adopting counterparts. Essentially every major automotive company at this point has built its future around selling more electric vehicles. Fewer new-car shoppers are considering EVs for their next vehicle, according to JD Power, with shoppers citing a lack of access to charging infrastructure as a main reason for ruling out EVs. Brands that have leaned into hybrids saw better sales results in February. "Hybrids are just rockin,'" Toyota Motor North America's sales chief David Christ told Automotive News after it released its sales results last week. The Toyota RAV4 SUV is one of the more popular hybrids on dealer lots. The data doesn’t include each voter with an electric vehicle, but it does offer some insight into political attitudes among consumers. Currently, the most widely available electric vehicles options are luxury brands, while mainstream consumers have more limited options. “We’re also seeing that things are really changing over time… That speaks to the fact that the economic and pollution benefits of electric vehicles don’t obey political boundaries.”Still, public opinion research suggests interest in electric vehicles has some partisan roots, even if the landscape may be changing. A 2023 Gallup poll found that 71% of Republicans would not consider buying an electric vehicle, compared with 17% of Democrats. More than one-third of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were registered in California, according to data from the US Department of Energy in 2022.

The switch to electric vehicles is still hampered by the high cost compared to gas cars. The higher upfront costs don't consider several less obvious costs that can hit after buying an EV. According to Mitchell, a collision repair software company, the average repair cost for a non-Tesla EV is $269 higher than the average for all vehicles.
