A changing ChinaIt was a different world in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when Chinese students first began surging overseas. In 2020, the US revoked visas for more than 1,000 Chinese students and researchers deemed security risks. In January this year, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in a briefing that “dozens of Chinese nationals, including international students, have been forcibly deported by the US each month.” He decried it as “discriminatory,” urging the US to protect the rights of Chinese students abroad. The Covid yearsThe number of Chinese students in the US plunged during the pandemic and hasn’t rebounded since. “Since the economic sanctions and tech restrictions started in 2018, many (Chinese) students have been sent back home,” one user wrote on Weibo.

AdvertisementI first went to law school in Mexico, where people were more open to friendships. However, the top three global financial hubs (New York, London, and Singapore) belong to common law countries. The US has a common law system, meaning that laws come from uncodified case law resulting from court decisions. Law schools in Mexico take a more theoretical approach, while law schools in the US focus on the practical side. In my case, both law schools made sure we acknowledged this in order to understand how useful we can be.

I'm a Yale student, and I just toured Oxford for the first time while studying abroad. I loved the old-school feel on campus and can see myself being a grad student at Oxford one day. When I first toured Yale, it felt like I encountered the sublime for the first time. However, over the summer, while studying abroad in London, I had the opportunity to spend a day wandering around the streets of Oxford and Oxford University. The city leans toward this impression; many shops play into the medieval university feel, which I loved.

Most clubs don't engage in a rush process, but many do, primarily due to space and funding. AdvertisementSince it's such a stressful process for many students, it's considered a controversial tradition on Yale's campus. The moot court team application included space to discuss my interests and some fun questions about seahorses just for kicks; I appreciated the levity. AdvertisementAs for the improv groups, they go above and beyond to make auditioning a fun experience for everyone. In an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance suggested that he and Donald Trump can win the “normal gay guy vote” and that families with transgender children are looking for an edge in Ivy League college admissions. An early portion of the interview focused heavily on transgender people and transition-related medical care, which Vance described as “pharmaceutical conversion therapy” for gay people. “I mean that’s what to me is so crazy about some of the hyper-left-wing reaction,” Vance responded. “Well, I think I’m probably going to pick you, but I don’t know, and I’m not ready to make a decision,” Vance recalled Trump saying. “We’re sitting there watching, like, some stupid show, ‘Emily in Paris’ on Netflix or something,” Vance said, before catching himself.

CNN —Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance suggested in an interview with podcast host Joe Rogan that aired Thursday that White upper- and middle-class children are incentivized to identify as transgender to gain admission to elite colleges. The only one that’s available in the hyper-woke mindset is if you become gender nonbinary,” the Ohio senator added. We’re letting a grown man walk around in a mini skirt in broad daylight,” Vance said. “If that’s what you’re doing, you’re a pervert. Vance also said he believes most Americans are open-minded about what he described as “lifestyle choices,” but transgender athletes who compete in women’s sports cross a line.

There's no such thing as a perfect parent, says Tovah Klein. Fortunately, making mistakes and owning up to them is one way that parents can actually help teach their kids how to become healthy, successful adults. Like most parents, Klein raised her voice in heated moments on more than one occasion: "I could really yell at my kids," she says. "I wish I had never been that parent who went over the top and really got into battles with my children.

For those willing to pay for a four-year, private college, it should be worthwhile, the sentiment often goes. To get into this elite group of schools, many families look for outside help to get a leg up. However, the wealthiest students hailing form the country's top private schools are primarily competing amongst themselves as schools look to build a diversified class.

Harvard donations are down following a year of campus turmoil. AdvertisementHarvard saw a dip in donations in the most recent fiscal year amid a wave of big-name backers pulling their financial support after fallout from the university's response to the Israel-Hamas war. In fiscal year 2024, which ended June 30, the Ivy League institution brought in just under $1.2 billion in cash gifts, according to a Harvard financial report released Thursday. Some wealthy alumni publicly vowed to suspend donations to Harvard following the university's bungled response to the campus unrest that spread across higher education institutions nationwide last year. Earlier this month, Garber hinted at the coming downturn in donations, telling the university's student newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, that the year's commitments were "disappointing" compared to prior years.

The parents of a Massachusetts high school senior are suing his teacher, school district faculty members and a local school committee for punishments he received after he used artificial intelligence tools to research and create an outline for a history class essay. The lawsuit is one of the first of its kind in contesting school discipline over the use of AI to complete academic work. The complaint said the school’s AI policy was added to the Hingham High School student handbook only the year after the plaintiff’s son was punished. “It’s underregulated, especially in a school setting,” Peter Farrell, the family’s lawyer, said about AI in a phone interview. “AI is an output from a machine.”The student’s school district, Hingham Public Schools, said it was unable to provide further details during ongoing litigation and to respect the student’s privacy.

His research finds that the correlation between your paycheck and your happiness holds extremely true across a vast range of incomes. Further, it shows that the psychological effect of more money is relatively the same across income brackets. In other words, if a person earning $200,000 a year and a person earning $50,000 both receive a 20% raise, the relative increase to their happiness will very likely be roughly the same. But in terms of quantifying their joy, the raise has about the same effect, Killingsworth says. "Money is one of many variables [in] the equation for happiness, and no single variable dominates," Killingsworth says.

Panera Bread has settled with the family of an Ivy League student with a heart condition who died after drinking the chain’s highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade drink. The suit said that Katz bought a Charged Lemonade from a Panera restaurant in September 2022. A second lawsuit blamed it for a Florida man’s death while the other two alleged that the Charged Lemonade caused permanent heart injuries in previously healthy people. The complaint said the Charged Lemonade also had guarana extract, another stimulant, as well as the equivalent of nearly 30 teaspoons of sugar in the large size. It also added prominent signs cautioning that Charged Lemonade contained caffeine, should be consumed in moderation and was not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing women.
