Kennedy will likely have some influence over who the president-elect chooses for those roles, health policy experts said. Ultimately, Kennedy's influence over immunization policy could lead to an increase in diseases preventable by vaccines, several health policy experts told CNBC. Investors are already bracing for a crackdown on food policy, with shares of processed food companies, such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola , falling on Friday. Seigerman said "there is little precedent in recent history for HHS policy dictating or affecting FDA regulation or approval of drugs." In 2023, pharmaceutical companies spent nearly $3 billion on advertising for the 10 most promoted drugs.

The Summary Trump plans to tap Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his health and human services secretary. Kennedy has spread misinformation about vaccines, fluoride, raw milk and other topics. Kennedy has also referred to the Covid vaccine as “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” despite data showing it’s overwhelmingly safe. As many as 30 states allow raw milk to be sold, but the FDA regulates its sale across state lines. But Kennedy has cast doubt on those findings, claiming without evidence that the drugs were discredited because various groups stood to make money off Covid vaccines.

Kennedy Jr., President-elect Trump's new pick for Health and Human Services secretary. AdvertisementHere's what we know so far about Kennedy's public health philosophy, and what kinds of reforms he might fight for in 2025 and beyond. Kennedy's MAHA ideas include shifts in some basic public health protocolsMost Americans have fluoridated tap water. His stance has public health officials spooked, because part of what makes vaccination work so well is the fact that nearly everyone in our society does it.

Some health experts said elevating Kennedy, even in an informal Trump administration position, could potentially lead to severe consequences for patients, drugmakers and the nation's public health overall. That could exacerbate the nation's existing public health challenges, such as declining childhood vaccination rates for several preventable diseases, some experts say. "I think we could reasonably predict that there would be a decline in vaccination rates among children, and perhaps vaccination overall." Drugmakers such as Pfizer and Moderna are still recovering from falling Covid vaccination rates in the U.S., which have dented their profits over the last two years. Kennedy's other proposals for overhauling federal health agencies will likely be difficult to execute.

Guo et al., 2024; Frontiers in Cell Developmental BiologyBut this rat's towering phallus is just one symptom of a crisis of fake science. Each step has holes in it that bad science could squeeze through, but the overlapping steps tend to cover each other's holes, making it difficult to squeeze all the way through the whole process. Still, bad science does make it through sometimes, and over the years more holes have opened up. The retracted paper's corresponding author, Dingjun Hao, did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Ivermectin is not FDA-approved for COVID treatment, but misleading posts cast the attorney’s statement as though it represented a change in the drug’s status. Referring to ivermectin, a post on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “The FDA now says the Nobel Prize winning drug is approved to treat COVID” (here). Ashley Cheung Honold, a Department of Justice lawyer representing the FDA, said that “FDA explicitly recognizes that doctors do have the authority to prescribe ivermectin to treat COVID” (see 22:26 timestamp) and “FDA is clearly acknowledging that doctors have the authority to prescribe human ivermectin to treat COVID” (see 31:30 timestamp). “In general, off-label uses have evidence for efficacy and safety that is less than that required to have an indication FDA-approved. Ivermectin is not FDA-approved to treat COVID but the agency does not prohibit physicians from prescribing the drug off-label.

Nearly 500 doctors had complaints filed against them over spreading COVID-19 misinformation. But only 4% received disciplinary action from state medical boards, the Washington Post reports. And state medical boards only disciplined 4% of those doctors, a Washington Post investigation revealed. From January 2020 to June 2023, the Post identified at least 480 complaints against physicians, related to spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of the 20 doctors disciplined for spreading COVID-19 misinformation, five of them lost their medical licenses, the Post reported.

On Monday, Judge Doughty refused a stay on his injunction, putting it into immediate effect. Other examples include laws passed in Florida and Texas that prohibit larger social media platforms from removing posts because of the opinions they express and the ban on TikTok that Montana has passed. How do you regulate a public right like freedom of expression when that right is intermediated by private companies? Those questions lie at the heart of the case before Judge Doughty. I agree with Judge Doughty that the apparent pressure that the Biden administration placed on the platforms is questionable.

Then, a deep dive into MrBeast and what his YouTube empire says about the future of the internet. Reddit came along and said, oh, we need to protect Reddit from the rise of these large language models. So I don’t think they’re totally out of the woods. But I don’t think people would say it was a golden age for how safe the platforms fell to use. But I want to challenge you on this, because I don’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing if we have past peak trust and safety.

The other kind of search — "exploratory search" — is the hard one. That's where you don't know what you don't know. When you're scrolling through the links in a Google search, looking for "esoteric shit," as one search expert calls it, you see some pages that just look dodgy, maybe in ways you can't even totally articulate. But search chatbots can fake all that. Google's search pages already aren't fully trustworthy — they overindex YouTube video results, for example, because YouTube is a subsidiary of Google.
When Dr. Natalia Solenkova woke up Monday morning, she was greeted with a flood of Twitter notifications on her phone. It was what misinformation researchers call a “cheap fake,” a term for a piece of fake media such as an image or video that takes little effort to produce. Someone had clumsily altered one of Solenkova’s posts to portray a blind, even deadly, zealotry for Covid vaccines and a vilification of anti-vaccine activists. “And then disinformation became rampant.”Despite the overwhelming success of the covid vaccines — which have prevented millions of severe infections and deaths — an aggressive and politicized anti-vaccine community has persevered. There were obvious tells that the tweet attributed to Solenkova was a fake, likely fabricated with what’s known as a tweet generator.
Amid news surrounding failed cryptocurrency firm FTX, social media users are pointing to FTX having funded the TOGETHER Trial, a research consortium that studied ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment and found it to be ineffective. But FTX did not interact with the research group until after the ivermectin trial was over, a TOGETHER Trial spokesperson told Reuters. An Instagram user shared an image that said, “Holy crap look who funded the trial that said Ivermectin didn’t work” (here). Similar claims surrounding FTX’s involvement with the TOGETHER Trial are viewable (here) and (here). FTX is not named as a contributor to the ivermectin trial because they weren’t involved, according to Mills, who added that the same is true of hydroxychloroquine and the other medications TOGETHER Trial investigated during the pandemic.
Ivermectin, a drug once touted by conservatives as a treatment for Covid, does not meaningfully improve the recovery time for people with mild to moderate Covid-19, according a large clinical trial published in a peer-reviewed journal. Ivermectin has been approved to treat parasitic worms in humans, but it's primarily used as a dewormer for horses. "Among outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19, treatment with ivermectin, compared with placebo, did not significantly improve time to recovery," the team of scientists led by Duke University School of Medicine wrote. The latest trial looked at 817 people who took ivermectin tablets for three days and compared them to 774 who received a placebo. The participants who took ivermectin received a daily dose based on their weight.
