CNN —Investigators are trying to crack the mystery of how two undersea internet cables in the Baltic Sea were cut within hours of each other, with European officials saying they believe the disruption was an act of sabotage and US officials suggesting it was likely an accident. The two cables – the BCS East-West connecting Lithuanian and Sweden and the C-Lion1 linking Finland with Germany – were suddenly disrupted on Sunday and Monday. And the disruption to the cables came just weeks after the US warned that Moscow was likely to target critical undersea infrastructure. Instead, the two officials told CNN they believed it likely caused by an anchor drag from a passing vessel. The Chinese-flagged ship Yi Peng 3 was spotted in the area around the times the two cables were cut.

CNN —European officials are looking toward Russia after two submarine internet cables in the Baltic Sea were suddenly disrupted in an apparent sabotage operation, just weeks after the United States warned that Moscow was likely to target critical undersea infrastructure. A cable between Lithuania and Sweden was cut on Sunday, according to Telia Lithuania, the telecommunications company that runs the link. Separately, the state-controlled Finnish telecoms company Cinia said one of its cables, which connects Finland and Germany, was disrupted on Monday. ”Nobody believes that these cables were accidentally severed,” he told reporters on Tuesday morning ahead of a ministerial meeting in Brussels, Belgium. The extent of the disruption, if any, caused by the damage to the cables is unclear.

CNN —An unexplained fault in an undersea telecommunications cable linking Finland and Germany has disrupted communication services, the company that runs the link said Monday. The C-Lion1 cable that connects Helsinki to Rostock in Germany was built and is operated by Cinia, a state-controlled Finnish company. It is unclear what caused the fault – Cinia said in a statement that it is still investigating the issue. However, the malfunction comes just weeks after the United States warned that it had detected increased Russian military activity around key undersea cables. A repair vessel is ready to go to the site of the fault, Cinia said, according to Finland’s public broadcaster, YLE.

The Israeli military has already withdrawn from the area twice after saying, both times, that it had crushed Hamas there. A drone fired over the weekend slipped through Israeli air defenses and struck Netanyahu’s beach house some 50 miles from the Lebanese border. Netanyahu’s reluctance to strike a ceasefire deal, even now after securing several military victories, has angered many in Israel. “Ending the Gaza war and the Lebanon war is not an option for his political partners in the coalition. In Tel Aviv, people protested outside the Israel Defense Forces’ headquarters, blocking traffic and chanting anti-government slogans. Eran Nissan, a peace activist from the progressive Israeli group Mehazkim, has been attending anti-government rallies since January last year. Or perhaps it shows a defiant hero who is staring the enemy in the eye while fighting till the bitter end. When the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing of Yahya Sinwar last week, they released several photos and a video showing the Hamas leader during his last moments alive and after his death. Internationally, it is under pressure over the mounting Palestinian death toll and horrific humanitarian situation in the strip. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic spokesperson, said the IDF found huge sums of money, food and water in Sinwar’s hideouts. But Siegal said that there was likely another reason for the IDF releasing the video showing Sinwar all alone at the end.

Israeli and US officials often had some sense of the general area where Sinwar was hiding over the long months. The only way in is with an Israeli military escort, which means reporters are only allowed to see what Israel wants them to see. In the moments before his death — which Israeli officials have said was caused by a bullet to the head — Israeli troops flew a drone into the heavily damaged building where he had fled. A video from the drone, released by the Israeli military, offers a silent account of his final moments. To the end, US intelligence officials believed that Sinwar was unconcerned with his own mortality, and determined to continue the fight.

Several Palestinians in Gaza told CNN they do not believe the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will put an end to the war. Gazan Abu Mohammad told CNN he felt Sinwar was a “symbol of the Palestinian people.” He told CNN he wanted Israel to stop the war, but had his doubts that it would. “You must end the war since the man has been killed,” he said. But while Sinwar’s death is a huge blow for Hamas, it does not signal the immediate demise of the group. Mousa Abu Marzouk, the deputy chief of Hamas’ political bureau who helped found Hamas, could also be a contender to become Sinwar’s replacement. Israel has killed Hamas’ previous leaders: In 2004 they killed Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Sinwar had consolidated power during the war, becoming Hamas’ sole decision maker in Gaza following the killing of the other two top Hamas officials there. Sinwar became Hamas’ most senior leader after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital Tehran in July.

And it could bring the devastating war in Gaza closer to an end, experts say – if Israel and its allies can seize the opportunity. Before the war, power in Hamas was decentralized – with Gaza political chief Sinwar just one of many leaders, Chorev said. Shira Efron, a senior director of policy research at the Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation said Sinwar’s killing gives Netanyahu the chance to claim a victory.
