Shares of 7-Eleven owner Seven & i soared nearly 11% on Wednesday after a report said the company's founding family was raising more than $50 billion to take the company private within this fiscal year. According to a report by Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the founding family will raise over 8 trillion yen ($51.66 billion) from "three Japanese megabanks and major American financial institutions," according to a Google translation of the report in Japanese. Should this acquisition go through, it will be the largest buyout of a Japanese company to date, NHK said. Seven and i said "no decision has been made regarding a proposed deal with Junro Ito, Ito Kogyo, ACT [Alimentation Couche-Tard] or other third parties at this time," Reuters reported. Junro Ito is Seven & i's vice president and the son of late Masatoshi Ito, founder of Seven & i. Ito-Kogyo is a company affiliated with the vice president, and is Seven and i's second-largest stakeholder with an 8.2% stake.

In a statement Friday, Tokyo-based Seven & I Holdings, which owns 7-Eleven, said it was “open” to “sincerely consider” any proposal that is in the best interests of its shareholders. The Financial Times reported on Thursday that Seven & I was open to the possibility of a higher offer from its suitor. Shares in Seven & I have rallied since the news of the offer broke last month, pushing its market value above $38 billion. Although 7-Eleven traces its origins to Dallas, Texas, it was the late Japanese entrepreneur Masatoshi Ito who is credited with turning it into a ubiquitous global brand.

That means the iconic profession is not only drastically underrepresenting Asian Americans, but historical data shows the community isn't making up ground like other minority populations. While the federal data may shock those outside the community, it connects to a long-documented problem of those who have historically held power mentoring others who look like them. Yet there has never been an Asian American judge appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. A Washington Post analysis found Biden has appointed the most non-white judges of any president, and approximately 14% have been Asian. It's also worth noting that the share of Asian judges has jumped around over the past decade rather than moving in a straight line.

Samsung Electronics named a new head for its semiconductor business on Tuesday, as the firm strives to lead the AI chip race. The firm aims "to strengthen its competitiveness amid an uncertain global business environment," Samsung Electronics said, adding that Jun has extensive experience leading the company's memory and battery manufacturing divisions. Samsung is in intense competition with SK Hynix to produce the most advanced memory chips in the market to ride the AI wave. The memory chip market is currently dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron — the world's top three suppliers. SK Hynix has been leading on the high-bandwidth memory front, having been the sole supplier of HBM3 chips to Nvidia , which is at the forefront of AI chips.

"We expect the general memory supply to remain tight throughout 2024," Kazunori Ito, director of equity research at Morningstar said in a report last week. The demand for AI chipsets has boosted the high-end memory chip market, hugely benefiting firms such Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the top two memory chipmakers in the world. High-performance memory chips play a crucial role in the training of large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, which led AI adoption to skyrocket. HBM's production cycle is longer by 1.5 to 2 months compared with DDR5 memory chip commonly found in personal computers and servers, market intelligence firm TrendForce said in March.

That's because the industries that led job growth in April are traditionally low-paying. Indeed, job growth is concentrated in industries that are historically low-paying — and continue to pay less than the average across private industries. As Pollak notes, "wage growth has come down sharply, but it's mostly come down in industries where it was very rapid before."
