A host of solutions — including blending hydrogen into natural gas infrastructure — will be needed to meet decarbonization goals, according to the CEO of Italgas . "It's extremely important that all the levers that you have are used," Gallo told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." He stressed that using pre-existing natural gas infrastructure was "essential" in this. "Today we are moving around natural gas, but tomorrow we will have biomethane [and] clean hydrogen that will be used to decarbonize the system," he added.

Global investors are navigating a busy week of corporate earnings and central bank meetings. The European Central Bank meets on Thursday, when policymakers are expected to announce a 25 basis point rate hike and offer guidance for the final stages of their efforts to fight inflation. It's another bumper day for earnings stateside, with Microsoft , Google parent Alphabet , Spotify and General Motors all due to report.
