Blinken and Sullivan both said Biden made the determination because he didn’t want American weapons used in what he estimates would be a bloody, ill-advised operation. At the same time, they sought to rebut claims from Republicans and pro-Israel Democrats that Biden was leaving Israel to fend for itself. Despite American warnings dating back months about the wisdom of a ground invasion into Rafah, Israel appears poised to continue advancing on the city and has issued evacuation orders for some of the 1.4 million civilians estimated to be sheltering there. That is partly why Biden determined that American weapons should not be used in a Rafah offensive. We treat Israel, one of our closest allies and partners, just as we would treat any other country,” Blinken said on NBC.

Schumer’s rebuke of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday contained extraordinarily strong language for a senior US politician criticizing the Israeli government. He also voiced support for a two-state solution to the long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, a position that Netanyahu has rejected. He was almost immediately accused of deserting a US ally in a time of war and of trying to interfere in Israeli politics. McConnell added: “Israel is not a colony of America whose leaders serve at the pleasure of the party in power in Washington. Biden himself last week warned Netanyahu was “hurting Israel more than helping Israel” with his assault on the Palestinian enclave.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing a barrage of super PAC money, more than 20 progressive groups are coming together to forcefully counter pro-Israel groups’ efforts to primary challenge liberal members who've been critics of Israel's blistering military offensive in Gaza. The coalition, called Reject AIPAC, includes Jewish peace organizations and Arab American and Muslim groups that have been organizing in record numbers since the Israel-Hamas war began in October. That campaign has turned the otherwise safely Democratic districts into election battlegrounds. Israel’s air and ground offensive has also driven most Palestinians from their homes and pushed one-quarter of the population toward starvation. This comes as AIPAC shifted in its own strategy in the last several years, transitioning from strictly a lobbying organization to helping elect centrist, pro-Israel Democrats.

In the next several months, "The Squad" will face its biggest electoral test yet. AdvertisementAfter spending big in Democratic primaries in 2022, pro-Israel groups are again working to defeat several Squad members by electing more moderate, pro-Israel Democrats in their place. Other pro-Israel groups, including Democratic Majority for Israel, are also expected to spend significant sums of money. Several Squad members now face not just well-funded primary challengers, but significant personal scandals that could cost them with former supporters. AdvertisementHowever not all Squad members are endangered, and several of them are expected to cruise to reelection as the group faces primaries across 7 states between now and September.

The House is voting on a $17.6 billion Israel aid bill as a broader national security bill stalls. Sen. John Fetterman, a vocally pro-Israel Democrat, doesn't want to see the Senate take it up. AdvertisementSen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has stuck his neck out in support of Israel more than many other Democrats since the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks. But that doesn't mean the Pennsylvania Democrat is breaking with his party on a $17.6 billion Israel aid bill that House Republicans are teeing up for a vote on Tuesday evening. "It's just cheap thrills," Fetterman said of the Israel bill in a brief interview with BI at the Capitol on Tuesday.

Bowman, Lee, Omar and Tlaib also were among the 17 sponsors of Bush’s resolution asking the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. Challenges to Bush and the others were possible even before the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 or Israel’s subsequent attack on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It is unfortunate, Andrabi said, that the House Democratic leadership has not taken a stronger stance against AIPAC’s efforts to knock off rank-and-file Democrats. It remains unclear whether House Democrats will help incumbents fend off primary challengers through campaign fundraising arms. Before Oct. 7, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., issued statements of support for Omar and others, saying he will support the reelection of every House Democratic incumbent, regardless of ideology.

Whatever effect they have on the diplomatic front, Biden’s Israel trip and Thursday night prime time television address can only help his reelection efforts at this point, especially if he faces Trump. Some Republicans even offered grudging praise for Biden’s Israel trip. Of course, many prominent conservatives still found grounds for panning the Democratic president. According to Gallup, Democratic support for Israel has been sliding for years. Voters for now are giving Biden reasonably good reviews for his handling of both Israel and Ukraine.

CNN —Cataclysmic events like the Hamas onslaught on Israel trigger profound political shocks and strategic transformations that no one could predict at the time. They unleashed extraordinary political forces inside nations like the United States and Britain, creating conditions that are still influencing society and elections. The Jewish state is no stranger to rocket attacks from Gaza or Lebanon or bus and suicide bombings. Republicans, led by ex-President Donald Trump, pounced on the Hamas attacks, seeking to saddle Biden with the blame over his attempts to defuse a US confrontation with Iran. So the war in Israel and Gaza will resonate far more widely than a cursed corner of the Middle East.

Sophia Alvarez Boyd andDespite forceful opposition, Israel’s government passed a judicial reform law that limits the ability of the country’s Supreme Court to overrule the government. In this audio short, our columnist Tom Friedman explains how the new law could destabilize the United States’ relationship with Israel and complicate American interests in the Middle East. “We are in a completely new phase now of relations between America and the Jewish state,” Friedman says. Rep. Pramila Jayapal's comments on Israel caused an uproar this week in Congress. Even after Jayapal clarified her remarks about Israel, House Democratic leadership issued a statement rebuking her. Separately, 43 House Democrats said in a statement that they were "deeply concerned" about Jayapal's "unacceptable comments." "There's a few issues where any nuance is really discouraged," said another progressive House Democrat who insisted on anonymity to discuss the issue frankly. But Phillips held firm in his belief that it was important to firmly denounce criticism of Israel when it crosses a certain threshold.
