Nine people, one of them a child, have been confirmed as dead after their boat sank in the early hours of Saturday morning, emergency and rescue services said. “After what happened yesterday and if the forecast for the arrival of the migrant boats happens, then it will be the biggest humanitarian crisis to happen to the Canary Islands in 30 years,” Candelaria Delgado of the Canary Islands government, told reporters on Sunday. Three of those rescued suffered from hypothermia and dehydration, rescue services said on Sunday. As hopes of finding more survivors diminished, police installed a morgue on El Hierro, authorities said. Three other boats reached the Canary Islands during the night, carrying 208 migrants.

The extended Australian police presence comes after the Solomon Islands upgraded ties with China, signing a policing agreement in July. Australia, New Zealand and the United States are concerned Chinese police could dislodge a long-standing security arrangement Canberra has with the Pacific Islands nation. The Solomon Islands said on Friday it had invited Australia to extend the police presence, originally due to end in December. Australia was the Pacific Islands nation's "primary security partner", a spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement on Sunday. The Solomon Islands last year signed a security pact with China, raising concern in Canberra and Washington about Beijing's naval ambitions.

"JPMorgan was a full-service bank for Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking," Liu said at the hearing, Bloomberg reported. Epstein, 66, killed himself in a New York jail in August 2019, a month after he was arrested on federal child sex trafficking charges. In addition to a residence in Manhattan, Epstein owned a private island in the Virgin Islands, where he was accused of sexually abusing women. A lawyer for JPMorgan, which denies wrongdoing in the case, pushed back against the Virgin Islands claims that it should be found liable for abetting Epstein's abuse of women. The Virgin Islands is seeking at least $190 million in damages in the case, which will go to trial on Oct. 23 if Rakoff does not grant summary judgment to either side.

At the time, there were reports that he paid cash to girls for "massages" — a code word for sex. When asked about the large withdrawals, Epstein said he needed to pay for jet fuel. JPMorgan's private bank has a policy to "discourage" large cash deposits and spending. Bankers, according to an excerpt of the guidelines filed in court Tuesday morning, are responsible for getting clients to explain their large cash withdrawals. "Issue is he really never stopped the large cash withdrawals," a compliance officer wrote then.

July 21 (Reuters) - Apollo Global Management Inc (APO.N) co-founder Leon Black paid $62.5 million to the U.S. Virgin Islands to avoid any legal claims tied to a Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking investigation, the New York Times reported on Friday. The Times obtained a copy of the settlement agreement from the Virgin Islands government through a public records request. A spokesperson for Black confirmed in an emailed statement to Reuters that Black had settled with the Virgin Islands, noting that there was no suggestion in the settlement "that Mr. Black was aware of or participated in any misconduct." The spokesperson went on to say that, as previously known, Black had paid Epstein for "legitimate financial advisory services" and that Black had "resolved the (Virgin Island's) potential claims arising out of the unintended consequences of those payments." A New York state judge in May dismissed a lawsuit accusing Black, 71, of defaming a woman by falsely claiming she tried to extort him after accusing him of rape, which he denied.

The previously undisclosed settlement came after the Virgin Islands reached a $105 million deal in November with Mr. Epstein’s estate. The Virgin Islands government produced its settlement agreement with Mr. Black in response to a public records request by The New York Times. The $62.5 million settlement followed that session. Mr. Black agreed to pay in cash, according the settlement document. Those dealings, including the revelation that he paid $158 million to Mr. Epstein for tax and estate planning services, had become a source of embarrassment for Mr. Black in the years after Mr. Epstein’s death.

In a statement on Friday, Sogavare's office said the Pacific Islands nation was broadening its security partnerships, and the Chinese police will add to the existing Australia and New Zealand policing support. Riots in the capital Honiara in 2021 exposed gaps in the islands' policing, it said. Opposition leader Matthew Wale said in a statement "policing is different in democracies than in communist countries and democracies must uphold human rights and due process". The issue was not China's supply of security equipment, but the compatibility of Chinese and Pacific policing, said Meg Keen, director of the Lowy Institute's Pacific Islands programme. Solomon Islands has a population of 700,000, across an archipelago that occupies a strategic position in the Pacific Islands, and was pivotal to the U.S. move west across the Pacific to liberate the Philippines in World War Two.

The government for the Virgin Islands said in a court filing it also wants JPMorgan Chase to implement an independent compliance consultant to prevent human trafficking and to separate its business and compliance functions. “This document does not reflect the nature of settlement conversations,” a spokesperson for JPMorgan Chase said. The Virgin Islands’ DOJ filed a brief in the United States District Court in the Southern District of New York on Friday. The Virgin Islands government filed its own lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase in December 2022. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon denied knowing about internal reviews of Epstein’s criminal conduct and his account with the bank when they were happening in depositions for the lawsuit.

Court filings show how Jeffrey Epstein exerted power in the US Virgin Islands, two of which he owned. A financier worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Epstein owned two islands in the US Virgin Islands (there are roughly 50 islands overall). He had donated generously to Democratic politicians from the US Virgin Islands for years. With the assistance of the US Virgin Islands' first lady, Epstein navigated the territory's political waters unscathed. The court records show that, at least in the US Virgin Islands, he exerted influence with little friction.

Dick Cavett was scheduled to dine with Jeffrey Epstein in February 2012. Their mutual friend Woody Allen, Soon-Yi Previn, and a Bill Gates advisor were also listed as attendees. Woody Allen, his wife Soon-Yi Previn, and Bill Gates advisor Boris Nikolic were also scheduled to be present, according to the email. At the time of the scheduled dinner, Epstein had registered as a sex offender following his guilty plea, in 2007, on prostitution solicitation charges in Florida. Nikolic had numerous scheduled meetings with Epstein between 2012 and 2015, the email records show.

US Virgin Islands is suing JP Morgan, accusing the bank of facilitating Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking scheme. As part of its lawsuit, the government wants to subpoena Google co-founder Larry Page. Epstein "may have referred or attempted to refer" Page to JP Morgan, court documents said. The US Virgin Islands government sued JP Morgan Chase in December, accusing the bank of facilitating and concealing Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking enterprise. An attorney representing the US Virgin Islands did not respond to a request for comment.
The Solomon Islands and China have consistently denied that their security pact would allow a naval base. The Solomon Islands Infrastructure Development Ministry has said that there will be no expansion of the port for dual use," a spokesperson for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Wednesday evening. Delegations from China and the United States are visiting Honiara this week, competing for influence in the strategically-located Pacific islands nation. "This will see the rehabilitation of the old Honiara international port and construction of the Honiara domestic port and two provincial ports," the Solomon Islands government said in a statement. "It is not about bases it is about access," Connolly, a former military officer, said, referring to the security pact between Honiara and Beijing.
New York CNN —JPMorgan Chase sued former executive James Edward “Jes” Staley, who was largely responsible for JPMorgan’s 15-year financial relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. By suing Staley, JPMorgan brings its former executive and former Barclays CEO into the court case as a defendant. The US Virgin Islands’ suit did not name Staley as a defendant and he has not been charged criminally with any activities related to Epstein. If successful, JPMorgan’s maneuver could make Staley financially responsible if JPMorgan loses its case. Those email exchanges allegedly continued long after Epstein was convicted, the US Virgin Islands government wrote in its complaint.
New York CNN —Former Barclays CEO Jes Staley allegedly exchanged sexually suggestive emails with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, some of which included photos of young women, according to newly unsealed passages of a federal lawsuit. He isn’t a defendant in the lawsuit and has not been charged criminally with any activities related to Epstein. The lawsuit alleges JPMorgan Chase “had a more than close-up view of Epstein’s sex-trafficking” and “ignored obvious red flags relating to Epstein’s accounts.”Both JPMorgan Chase and Barclays declined to comment on the newly unsealed passages. I have few so profound.”One month later, Staley allegedly sent another email to Epstein: “I realize the danger in sending this email. JPMorgan Chase did not flag any of the emails between Epstein and Staley in connection with risk reviews, according to the lawsuit: “Moreover, JP Morgan Chase allowed Staley to remain a decision-maker on Epstein’s accounts.
Jes Staley has maintained he was friendly with Jeffrey Epstein but never knew about his alleged crimes. Former Barclays PLC chief Jes Staley exchanged more than a thousand emails with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein , some of which included photos of young women in seductive poses, according to court documents released this week. The emails, revealed by the U.S. Virgin Islands government in a lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase & Co., where Mr. Staley was once a top executive, shed new light on the relationship between the banker and the late financier who was charged with sex trafficking before his apparent suicide in 2019.
The US Virgin Islands is suing JPMorgan for facilitating Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking scheme. The finger-pointing comes in response to a lawsuit the US Virgin Islands attorney general filed against JPMorgan in December, in a Manhattan federal court. In court filings Wednesday asking a judge to dismiss the US Virgin Islands lawsuit, JPMorgan said the US territory got greedy after already reaching a settlement with Epstein's estate last year. If anything, JPMorgan claims, the Virgin Islands attorney general's office was in an even better position to stop Epstein's trafficking scheme given its powers as a law enforcement agency. In fact, JPMorgan says, the Virgin Islands government "granted Epstein and his businesses lucrative privileges and massive tax incentives."
