The Gap comeback that might actually be working
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( Cathleen Chen | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +21 min
Designer Zac Posen — now creative director at Gap Inc., at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in March 2024. Danny Moloshok/ReutersSince 2014, the Gap brand has nearly halved its presence in North America, going from 968 stores in the market to 472 as of February. It makes up about 20% of overall Gap Inc. revenue, while Old Navy accounts for more than half. Before Gap, Posen was on track for a similar trajectory to Mizrahi’s. They started by redefining the positioning of each brand: Gap as a pop culture brand.

CEO Tom Kingsbury estimated in late May that those expanded categories, including Babies R Us, are “a $2 billion-plus sales opportunity” in the coming years. On a store tour in New Jersey on Wednesday, Chief Merchandising Officer Nick Jones showed off the first Babies R Us shop. Kohl’s will put Babies R Us shops next to its existing baby apparel. Courtesy KohlsOver the past few weeks, online shoppers have also seen Babies R Us on Kohl’s website. As it relaunches Babies R Us, Kohl’s will test whether the brand has remained relevant or grown stale.

The exhibition seeks to foreground Aghion at the brand, repositioning Chloé as a historically important fashion name and giving the museum a pop culture edge. Do you think this is a teachable moment about cultural preconceptions, an effort by the museum to reach a new audience, or both? The Jewish Museum has mounted art-historically important exhibitions, though as you say, infrequently about fashion (their first was a buoyant Isaac Mizrahi survey in 2016). It’s rare for one show to focus on a single ready-to-wear brand such as Chloé. Yet that’s what the Jewish Museum is doing, and it suggests that brand has something very important to say.

The fashion show that changed hip-hop forever

CNN —Chanel’s 1991 Fall-Winter ready-to-wear show was set in Paris, but its soul was right off the streets of New York City. “He listens to everything, reads everything, sees everything, and then distills it into these potent fashion images.”Linda Evangelista and Karl Lagerfeld (center) walk the runway during the finale of Chanel's 1991 Fall-Winter fashion show in Paris, France. Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesWhat would become known colloquially as Chanel’s “hip-hop collection” was a watershed moment, the pinnacle of French prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) welcoming hip-hop into its sanctum. It’s unclear whether Mizrahi and the like appreciated hip-hop or saw it as a grab for cache and cash. Editor’s Note: This piece is excerpted from Sowmya Krishnamurthy’s “FASHION KILLA: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion,” published by Gallery Books, a subsidiary of Simon & Schuster.

“Most of the time, I’m halfway content.”Those words are Bob Dylan’s, and they were delivered one night last week by Brooke Shields during her sold-out debut show at the Café Carlyle, the intimate Manhattan supper club where Bobby Short, Elaine Stritch and Debbie Harry have performed. It was five months after Ms. Shields had returned to the spotlight with “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” an acclaimed documentary that chronicled the ups and downs of a career that got its start in the 1970s, when she was a child model and actress marketed as a sex symbol. A number of celebrities came out to see her at the venue, which is blocks away from the Upper East Side apartment where she grew up. At a table close to the stage were the actors Naomi Watts, Billy Crudup and Laura Dern. Nearby sat Mariska Hargitay, whom Ms. Shields has worked with on “Law & Order: SVU.” The crowd also included two men who had done cabaret at the Carlyle: Isaac Mizrahi, who designed the loosefitting orange dress Ms. Shields was wearing, and Alan Cumming.

IT’S EASY TO SEE why Isaac Mizrahi’s Instagram feed is everyone’s favorite cooking show right now. The renowned fashion designer/actor/singer/producer’s videos, shot in his Bridgehampton, N.Y., and Manhattan kitchens, showcase his warm personality as well as his sporadic screw-ups. “This is exactly how cooking shows should be!” one commenter gushed. “They are always too perfect and intimidating!”On any given “episode” of his highly entertaining one-man show, Mr. Mizrahi (@imisaacmizrahi) might welcome his “darlings” to cook along, or to peek inside his drawer full of ice cream scoops, or to compose a cocktail along with him while he watches “Jeopardy!”
A viral video of gay icon Madonna appearing to suggest that she is gay herself has taken the internet by storm. During an interview on Andy Cohen’s talk show “Watch What Happens Live!” Mizrahi suggested Bernhard and Madonna at one point had a sexual relationship. “The gay community has been incredibly supportive of me,” she told Ellen DeGeneres during a 2010 interview in which she sounded the alarm about a rise in suicides among gay teenagers. Madonna’s video resembles another recent TikTok from actress Shay Mitchell, who played a lesbian in the teen drama “Pretty Little Liars,” in which Mitchell seems to come out as bisexual. Representatives for Madonna did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
