Apple committed about $1.5 billion to satellite communications company Globalstar to fund the expansion of iPhone services, the companies disclosed in a securities filing on Friday. The tech giant's deal with Globalstar includes $1.1 billion in cash, of which $232 million will go toward the satellite company's current debt, and a 20% equity stake. The deal is expected to close on Tuesday. Apple has already been spending hundreds of millions for Globlastar services, which enabled the 2022 rollout of iPhone emergency satellite texting. Globalstar stock jumped as much as 36% in Friday trading from its previous close at $1.05 a share.

Now the California-based startup is attempting to make asteroid mining a reality. That makes AstroForge the only company with a refinery that can turn M-type asteroids into PGMs in space, he adds. Some in the scientific community are skeptical that the private sector will be able to afford asteroid mining. Its all-or-nothing, lower-cost approach may help push asteroid mining closer to reality. “I hope if nothing else,” Gialich says, “we’re known as a space company that went for it.”

Using micro-order uniform powder alloys with unprecedented chemical properties opens up new possibilities for manufacturing that have never been seen before, such as in 3D printing and the use of paste-like inks. A high-entropy alloy powder of precious metals can potentially be used as a raw material for automotive exhaust gas sensors, resistors, and water electrolysis catalysts. Creating new value through exhaustive studyTANAKA began working on high-entropy alloy powders in response to the world's rapid development. TANAKAHosoi noticed that high-entropy alloys have recently been attracting international attention, largely due to their potential for unprecedented properties. Platinum is used to make the electrolyzers that produce hydrogen and the sharp down cycle in South Africa’s platinum mining sector demonstrates the risk that low prices and lack of investment could slow the energy transition. Prices for other commodities have also fallen, while miners have been complaining of rising costs and seem to be limiting their capital expenditures. Photo: michele spatari/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesFor the mining sector, cyclical returns are nothing new. Ray said many South African PGM miners are now selling their output at close to the cost of production, eating away at profitability. “To the extent that PGM prices stay at current levels, I would not be surprised to see more supply-side reaction,” Ray said.

Apple on Wednesday announced it is granting iPhone 14 users an additional free year of its safety service Emergency SOS via satellite. Emergency SOS via satellite allows users to text emergency services even if they are outside of an area with Wi-Fi or cell coverage. The free trial of Emergency SOS via satellite applies to iPhone 14 users who activated their device in an eligible country or region before Nov. 15, Apple said. The service is also available to users who purchased one of Apple's iPhone 15 devices, which was announced in September. The feature is free to iPhone 15 users for two years.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s Psyche spacecraft rocketed away Friday on a six-year journey to a rare metal-covered asteroid. SpaceX launched the spacecraft into an overcast midmorning sky from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Scientists envision spiky metal craters, huge metal cliffs and metal-encrusted eroded lava flows greenish-yellow from sulfur — “almost certain to be completely wrong,” according to Elkins-Tanton. Led by Arizona State University on NASA’s behalf, the $1.2 billion mission will use a roundabout route to get to the asteroid. So instead of arriving at the asteroid in 2026 as originally planned, the spacecraft won’t get there until 2029.

CNN —SpaceX is asking federal regulators to correct a report that suggests the company’s Starlink satellite constellation could pose grave risks to people on Earth. The report was delivered to members of Congress by the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses the launch and reentry of commercial spacecraft, on October 5. The letter also states that 325 Starlink satellites have already deorbited since February 2020, and no debris has been found. For purposes of this report, the FAA uses the more conservative approach,” according to the document. Starlink is mentioned 28 times in the FAA report, while Amazon’s Project Kuiper system is mentioned four times in data tables.

Aug 29 (Reuters) - Globalstar (GSAT.A) on Tuesday named former Qualcomm (QCOM.O) top boss Paul Jacobs as its CEO, sparking a near 20% surge in the shares of the satellite firm behind Apple's emergency communication services. Jacobs, 60, is also a board member of IPO-bound chip firm Arm and will replace David Kagan, who is retiring after about 5 years as CEO. It will pay XCOM licensing fees including the issuance of about 60 million common stock shares valued at around $64 million. "Some of XCOM's leaders contributed to the original Globalstar system while at Qualcomm." Iridium Comunications (IRDM.O) partnered with Qualcomm earlier in May to develop emergency SOS messaging for Android users, going head-to-head with Apple.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Last year I wrote about the key terms investors should know about the steps involved in a rocket launch, to give a guide for what phrases mean in context. A number of you found that launch guide helpful, so I'm back with another synthesized glossary – but this time for satellites! We've seen a couple of satellites going awry this summer, and I've gotten questions like: "Dang, I thought the launch was successful?" Processing: Mounting the satellite to the rocket and making sure the satellite is healthy, fueled up and ready for launch.

Barclays upgraded satellite communications company Iridium to overweight Thursday, saying there's 29% upside for the stock after its "solid" second quarter and attractive outlook. This is in line with the scenario we had in mind, and so we now consider the risk/reward attractive," Barclays analyst Mathieu Robilliard wrote in a note to clients. Barclays has a $65 price target on Iridium's stock, or 29% above Thursday's close of $50.58 a share. Iridium's stock is flat year to date. "We believe this will represent a strong source of revenues for Iridium, but will be gradual (c. $90m by 2027)," Robilliard wrote.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. As Wall Street works its way through second-quarter earnings reports, investors are getting a closer look at first-half performance from the space sector — and setting expectations for the second half of the year. Wall Street continues to be jazzed about the opportunity in the direct-to-device satellite market, but Iridium cautioned that it will take time for the nascent vertical to mature. Most of the other space stocks will report results over the first two weeks of August (aside from Planet , which follows a fiscal year calendar, and Mynaric , Satellogic , Intuitive Machines and Sidus Space ). As a guide for the upcoming Q2 space results, I'm roughly separating companies into two groups: No surprises wanted, and good surprises needed.

Experts who spoke to Insider say radio astronomy helps us study dark matter and look for alien life. The Starlink satellites — chosen for their abundance in the sky compared to other low-orbit satellites — were observed using the Low-Frequency Array telescope in the Netherlands. Using the telescope, scientists detected frequencies from the Starlink satellites at 110 to 188 megahertz — a unit of measure used for electromagnetic waves. "We are not saying that right now that radio astronomy is doomed, and that we will not be able to do astronomy anymore. There is also the financial loss: Millions of dollars go into planning and building these massive radio telescopes over decades.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Recently I woke up to a text message from a satellite, sent by Lynk Global co-founder and CEO Charles Miller. "I asked them to send that text message from one of our phones," Miller said. So far, the satellite operators of Globalstar , Iridium , SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile are also chasing this untapped market. It plans on "launching many more this year" and has an eventual goal of up to 5,000 satellites in orbit.
