Views of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement — or MAGA — reveal a lot about likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers’ candidate preferences ahead of Monday’s GOP caucuses. Overall, the new NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll finds a combined 40% of likely caucusgoers identifying themselves as either “Ultra MAGA” (18%) or “Regular MAGA” (22%) when asked how they view the phrase. Among the likely caucusgoers who say Trump is their first choice, a combined 60% describe themselves as either Ultra MAGA (31%) or Regular MAGA (29%). And DeSantis’ supporters are in the middle: 24% are either Ultra or Regular MAGA; 57% are neutral; and 17% are anti-MAGA. The NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll of Iowa was conducted Jan. 7-12 of 705 likely Republican caucusgoers, and it has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.7 percentage points.

In December, I wrote about the moral devolution of Rudy Giuliani and of the other MAGA men and women who have populated the highest echelons of the Trump movement. I live in the heart of MAGA country, and Donald Trump is the single most culturally influential person here. It is common for those outside the Trump movement to describe their aunts or uncles or parents or grandparents as “lost.” They mean their relatives’ lives are utterly dominated by Trump, Trump’s media and Trump’s grievances. But never before have I seen extremism penetrate a vast American community so deeply, so completely and so comprehensively. They went from least likely to most likely to excuse the immoral behavior of politicians.

He’s getting over 60% in a number of national surveys of the GOP primary and holds the advantage in every early state that’s been polled. Take a look at CNN’s most recent survey of the state’s GOP primary conducted by the University of New Hampshire. The fact that Trump’s share of the New Hampshire primary vote remains flat is notable. In 2016, New Hampshire GOP primary voters were twice as likely to identify as moderates and independents than Iowa Republican caucusgoers. And keep this in mind: The winner of the Iowa GOP caucuses rarely wins the New Hampshire GOP primary.

The Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom survey of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers shows Trump has the backing of 42%, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 19% and U.S. Among Trump supporters, however, 66% said their vote was set, while 34% said they could be persuaded to change their minds. The poll found 65% of likely Republican caucusgoers didn't think Trump had committed serious crimes, compared with the 26% who believed he had. The survey came ahead of Wednesday's first Republican primary debate, which Trump has said he will skip, citing his large lead in polls. A national CBS poll on Sunday showed Trump was the preferred candidate for 62% of Republican voters, with DeSantis trailing behind at 16%.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina enjoyed on Tuesday what other candidates had missed: having the Iowa State Fair largely to himself. He shook hands, tried barbecue and threw footballs with fairgoers — all a natural part of the retail politics of a presidential candidate seeking to gain standing in the first-in-the-nation caucus state. Kim Reynolds of Iowa and was repeatedly recognized — and praised — by fairgoers. Still, he faces an uphill battle as he seeks to propel himself from a distant third place, at best. All those candidates, however, then proceeded to lose the New Hampshire primary and the party nomination. Only 26% of New Hampshire Republican primary voters identified the same way. Trump has also been weaker among demographic groups who make up a larger share of the New Hampshire Republican electorate. Although the 2016 Iowa entrance poll did not ask about income, the 2020 general election exit poll did. (Note: Household and family income are somewhat different measures, but I’m merely demonstrating that New Hampshire Republicans are, on the whole, wealthier than Iowa Republicans.)
