They argue that Casey, a middle-of-the-road liberal, had previously not been at the forefront of the populist economic turn in both parties. Casey’s Senate website dedicates an entire page to “greedflation,” which he also discussed at length in his speech at the Democratic National Convention this summer. The core of Casey’s argument is the assertion that, from July 2020 to July 2022, corporate profits rose five times faster than overall inflation. I would concede the economy has gotten better,” said McCormick, who has run an ad to counter Casey on the topic. “If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you’re still in the grind, and that’s what I think Bob Casey and Kamala Harris do not understand.

— A Louisiana state trooper pleaded no contest Monday to significantly reduced charges that spare him jail time in the deadly 2019 arrest of Black motorist Ronald Greene, the first conviction of any kind in a prolonged police brutality case that once prompted national outrage. It’s unfair.”District Attorney John Belton declined to say Monday whether justice had been served in Greene’s death, noting the case remains open. York, 51, also will retain his nearly $83,000-a-year pension following his August retirement from the Louisiana State Police. Greene’s death was among several beatings of Black men by Louisiana troopers that prompted the U.S. Justice Department to open an ongoing civil rights investigation into the state police’s use of force. But federal prosecutors still have not said whether they will file charges in the case following a years-long FBI investigation.

CNN —The owner of two Boston-area pizza shops has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for subjecting employees to years of violence and intimidation, according to prosecutors. In June, he was convicted on three counts of forced labor and three counts of attempted forced labor. Authorities discovered that Papantoniadis operated his pizza shops with a skeletal staff, forced workers to perform grueling shifts of 14 hours or more, often seven days a week. Papantoniadis violently choked a worker who expressed his intention to quit, causing the victim to flee in fear, investigators found. “Today’s significant sentence sends a message to employers — employees deserve to work in safety, free from harassment and abuse.”

JPMorgan Chase has begun suing customers who allegedly stole thousands of dollars from ATMs by taking advantage of a technical glitch that allowed them to withdraw funds before a check bounced. A Houston case involves a man who owes JPMorgan $290,939.47 after an unidentified accomplice deposited a counterfeit $335,000 check at an ATM, according to the bank. “On August 29, 2024, a masked man deposited a check in Defendant’s Chase bank account in the amount of $335,000,” the bank said in the Texas filing. The infinite money glitch episode highlights the risk that social media can amplify vulnerabilities discovered at a financial institution. JPMorgan prioritized cases with large dollar amounts and indications of possible ties to organized crime, they said.

They successfully lobbied for new state election laws and procedures, diving deep into the intricacies of election regulations. Earlier this year, Ms. Mitchell said she was called by God to shift her attention to the possibility that noncitizens were voting. They were involved in recent attempts to make it easier for State Election Board members to hold up certification while they conduct inquiries into the vote. Israel’s Knesset opened its winter session on Monday against a backdrop of war in Gaza and Lebanon and after an Israeli strike on Iran on Saturday. UNRWAThe Knesset was set to debate on Monday bills that would make it illegal for Israeli officials to cooperate with UNRWA, the main U.N. agency that aids Palestinians. The bills would effectively shut down the agency’s work in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem within 90 days. According to the Jerusalem Post, the first bill states that UNRWA could no longer operate in Israel, while the second would abrogate the treaty that underpins the relationship between UNRWA and Israel. The Knesset has already voted in favor of advancing the bill and it is being prepared for a second and third reading.

Reuters —Nineteen people died and six others were injured when a bus crashed on a highway in Mexico’s central state of Zacatecas on Saturday, local authorities said. The accident occurred in the early morning hours when the bus carrying the victims collided with the back of a tractor-trailer carrying corn, which had come loose. Zacatecas Governor David Monreal earlier on Saturday had initially reported a preliminary death toll of 24 people, but the state attorney general’s office later revised the tally in a statement. The attorney general’s office said it was “carrying out investigations to arrest the driver” of the tractor-trailer. The victims did not include migrants, according to the attorney general’s office.

WASHINGTON — Among the many permutations for how the elections could end, one prospect has sparked chatter in both parties: Donald Trump could win the presidency while Democrats seize control of the House. Such a split would be rare — not since 1989 has a president entered office without his party controlling the House — and give Democrats substantial power over Trump's legislative agenda. In addition, persisting signs of ticket-splitting indicate Trump voters won’t all pull the lever for his party’s candidates down the ballot. The operative added that if Trump overperforms in rural areas, it could spell danger for a few Democratic-held House seats, such as Alaska's at-large district and Maine's 2nd District. “It’s why the American people will send President Trump a Republican House to secure the border, bring down inflation, and support law enforcement.”Asked about the prospect of a Trump presidency and a Democratic-controlled House, the Democrats' House campaign arm sounded an optimistic note that its party will win both.

Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut have all pulled onions from a portion of their restaurants following reports of a “severe” E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. The removal comes two days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention first announced in a food safety alert on its website that there was an E. coli outbreak across multiple states linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders. Brands spokesperson also confirmed onions were removed from some of its Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC locations. “As we continue to monitor the recently reported E. coli outbreak, and out of an abundance of caution, we have proactively removed fresh onions from select Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC restaurants,” the spokesperson said. The CDC has reported 49 cases and 10 hospitalizations due the McDonald's E. Coli outbreak.

One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. For example, rival Wendy's dealt with its own link to an E. coli outbreak two years ago. However, that transparency means more media coverage, which reminds consumers about the crisis and risks scaring them away from McDonald's restaurants.

CNN —Senior-level personnel changes at the US Secret Service as well as the creation of new divisions are underway as the agency works to resolve security breakdowns that preceded the two attempts on former President Donald Trump’s life this summer. Typically, incoming presidents choose their own Secret Service director, and it’s hard to know whether Vice President Kamala Harris or Trump would retain Rowe. “I’m trying to get programs more closely aligned with the mission, getting them out to the field so that they are directly supporting enforcement operations, major criminal investigations and, of course, protective operations,” Rowe told CNN. Radio calls from local police who saw the shooter on the roof shortly before he opened fire never made it to the Secret Service. CNN has previously reported on the strain inside the Secret Service as the agency dramatically ramps up protection during the final stretch of the campaign season.

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Friday warned that if the U.S. kicked off a trade war with the European Union, there could be retaliation. Trade is one of the main pillars of the German economy, suggesting heightened tensions, uncertainty and tariffs would hit the country harder than others. Trade tensions between the U.S. and China, and the EU and China, have been rising throughout the year. Both the U.S. and EU have implemented higher tariffs and on some goods imported from China, citing unfair trade practices. China in turn has also announced higher temporary tariffs on some imports from the EU.

The bird flu virus hasn’t yet spread from person to person, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday, releasing findings from a monthslong probe into a patient in Missouri who was hospitalized with H5N1. The patient, who tested positive for bird flu in August, had no known contact with dairy cows or poultry. One blood test on a household member of the patient who became ill suggested the person did have H5 antibodies. The bird flu outbreak in dairy cows has infected 333 herds across 14 states so far. “This is a fast-moving situation.”California, which has reported the largest number of bird flu cases, 15, has also asked for federal help, the CDC said.

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign event at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2024. A stark shift toward former President Donald Trump on the political gambling platform Polymarket this month stoked scrutiny about four accounts that have collectively spent over $28 million betting on the Republican nominee to win the 2024 presidential election. Polymarket on Thursday confirmed what a number of experts have suspected: All four accounts are controlled by a single trader. The company insisted that it has found no evidence that the trader is trying to juice Trump's odds on the political betting market. The scrutiny on the Polymarket trades comes as political betting markets have taken on a much more prominent role in the 2024 election cycle.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. Buttigieg said there are investigations into other airlines, although he said that “American Airlines appear to be one of the worst offenders.”“The problems that we have uncovered in our investigation are not confined to one airline,” Buttigieg said.
