Southwest’s new plan comes as its leaders seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management, which has called for leadership changes. He had served as CEO of AirTran, the airline Southwest combined with in 2011, and was a consultant to Southwest after the merger. Southwest has supported Jordan despite calls for his replacement by Elliott, which didn’t immediately respond to the airline’s plan it laid out on Thursday. Both regular and enhanced seats will be available for selection at booking, starting in 2025 for flights in early 2026, Southwest said. Southwest AirlinesSouthwest has already announced an improved cabin with tablet holders, charging ports, upgraded overhead bins, and better WiFi. The cabin improvements come as Southwest plans to cut some short-haul flying in favor of more lucrative long-haul operations. Keshub Mahindra, an Indian industrialist who built a family steel and automotive business into a vast multinational conglomerate, but whose reputation was marred by his conviction for negligence in a poison gas leak that killed thousands of people in Bhopal in 1984, died on April 12. His company, Mahindra Group, confirmed his death in a statement but did not specify where he died. Relations between France and Burkina Faso, a former French colony, have deteriorated following two military coups this year that were partly spurred by local authorities' failure to protect civilians from jihadist attacks. Tensions flared last month, when the Burkina Faso government requested the replacement of France's ambassador. Protests by opponents of the French military presence surged this year, partly linked to perceptions that France has not done enough to improve security. Zacharopoulou said French troops would remain in Burkina Faso "as long as their presence is desired".
