LOS ANGELES, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes said he is eager to suit up for Team USA when flag football makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. "I definitely want to but I've seen some of those guys play the flag football and they are a little faster than I am," Mahomes told reporters on Friday in Munich, where the Chiefs are set to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Flag football looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. With the backing of the NFL it was among five sports added to the program for the 2028 Games alongside cricket, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball. Flag football's governing body, the International Federation of American Football, has the final say over who makes the cut to play for their country.

On Monday, LA28 organisers formally asked that flag football for both the men's and women's competitions as well as four other sports be added to the event. It would mark the Olympic debut for flag football, a game that looks similar to tackle football, with passing and receiving, but requires little protective equipment, with play stopping when a defender pulls a cloth flag from the waist of an opponent. "But I will tell you that through this process a number of great young stars of the league have said how great it would be to represent their country and play flag." O'Reilly said one appeal of flag football is that it is low cost and that almost anyone can play it. "The Olympics in LA would be a tremendous boost to flag football around the world and in this country."

(Chase Stevens/Las Vegas Review-Journal/Tribune News Service via Getty Images)The NFL said it is eliminating the Pro Bowl in favor of a week's worth of skill competitions and a flag football game. In what's now called "The Pro Bowl Games," players from both conferences will showcase their football and non-football talents in a weeklong series of competitive events, replacing the full-contact Pro Bowl game that started in 1951. The multiday event will be held in Las Vegas in February, and will culminate with a flag football game to take place at Allegiant Stadium, where the Las Vegas Raiders play. Manning will also take part in the coaching staff for the flag football game.
