Trump Media is reportedly in “advanced talks” to buy the cryptocurrency trading firm Bakkt, the Financial Times reported Monday, citing two people with knowledge of the talks. Trump Media, which is majority-owned by President-elect Donald Trump, shot up by double digits minutes after the FT report was published. While Trump Media has reported a $363 million net loss on revenues of just $2.6 million so far this year, it boasts a market cap above $7 billion. A Trump Media spokeswoman did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Insurance experts said the back-to-back hurricanes could signal rising insurance rates nationwide. AdvertisementTwo back-to-back hurricanes in Florida in recent weeks will likely raise home insurance rates even higher in a state that is already grappling with prices nearly four times the national average, insurance experts told Business Insider. The compounding financial crises of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton could also point to looming hikes in insurance rates nationwide, the home insurance experts said. They pointed to the recent Florida storms as examples of the increasingly severe and frequent climate catastrophes wreaking havoc on the global insurance market. AdvertisementAn uptick in reinsurance rates in recent years has been a driving force behind climbing insurance rates nationwide, said Kyle Ulrich, president and CEO of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents.

Unlike the more popular fixed-rate mortgage loans, ARMs can offer temporary relief for homebuyers who want to avoid paying higher mortgage rates — however, they also come with risk. That means when mortgage rates increase, many ARM loan holders, like Hernandez, experience the unpleasant shock of significantly higher monthly home payments. Mortgage rates have remained elevated, adding fuel to one of the most unaffordable housing markets in decades. To Hernandez, it made little sense to refinance the loan while the 30-year fixed mortgage rate remains higher than her new adjusted rate. Marquis said that taking out an ARM loan might be worthwhile for those with a higher risk appetite.

This means that a buyer keeps the seller’s repayment period, mortgage balance and, notably, the seller’s lower mortgage rate. Securing that ultra-low mortgage rate means that Harper will save thousands of dollars in monthly payments. “I just decided I wanted to see how low I could pay on the interest rate,” Harper said. And while the mortgage rate on the second loan may be high, the total monthly payment could still be lower — if the assumed mortgage rate is low enough.
