Over the years, Israel has viewed “targeted killings” as a way to deter attacks on the county, fuel fear among its enemies and exact revenge. Iran’s nuclear program is closer to building a bomb than ever, even after several nuclear scientists were killed, he said. But the Mossad operation dismayed Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who demanded the resignation of the spy service’s chief. Almost four decades later, Israel killed a major Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a Dubai hotel in a complex plot involving more than two dozen Mossad operatives. In an echo of this week’s attacks in Lebanon, Israel killed a Hamas bombmaker, Yahya Ayyash, in 1996 with a cellphone outfitted with explosives.

Hamas and Iran on Wednesday accused Israel of assassinating Ismail Haniyeh, one of the Palestinian militant group’s most senior figures, in Tehran. Iran and Israel have fought a covert war for years, blaming each other for sabotage, abductions and targeted killings across the region. Tehran has also accused Israel of past assassinations inside Iran. Mr. Fakhrizadeh was one of Israeli intelligence’s top targets for years, and Iran angrily accused Israel of killing him. He wasn’t the first scientist linked to the nuclear program to be attacked on Iranian soil.

CNN —A London judge has ordered former President Donald Trump to pay six figures in legal fees to a company he sued over a controversial dossier that made unverified and salacious allegations about him, according to court documents released Thursday. After dismissing the former president’s case last month against retired British intelligence officer Christopher Steele and his company, Orbis Business Intelligence, Judge Karen Steyn has ordered Trump to pay £300,000 ($385,000) to the company, according to court documents. Steyn ultimately ordered Trump to pay less than 50% of Orbis Business Intelligence’s stated costs. CNN has reached out to Orbis Business Intelligence and the Trump campaign for comment. Trump also faces his own legal fees in the 91 charges he faces in four criminal cases.

Climate catastrophes: Climate change is a hot topic as leaders meet to discuss balancing economic growth with sustainability. Davos comes just days after scientists around the globe reported that the average temperatures last year reached a new record high. The report also said that cooperation among global leaders on the issue is scarce. So while leaders will likely discuss the use of fossil fuels and green development, there may not be much agreement. Leaders gathered in Davos Sunday to discuss Ukrainian President Zelensky’s 10-point peace plan to end Russia’s war with his country.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) letters are placed on computer motherboard in this illustration taken June 23, 2023. “It is clear over the last three years that transparency is on the decline while capability is going through the roof," said Stanford professor Percy Liang, a researcher behind the Foundation Model Transparency Index. Foundation models are AI systems trained on massive datasets that can perform a variety of tasks from writing to coding. The index’s authors hope that the report will encourage companies to increase their foundation model transparency, and also serve as a starting point for governments grappling with how to regulate the burgeoning field. The index is a project from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s Center for Research on Foundation Models.

“I will remain cognizant of the tightening in financial conditions through higher bond yields and will keep that in mind as I assess the future path of policy,” Jefferson said in remarks to the National Association for Business Economics. The remarks by Jefferson and earlier by Dallas Fed president Lorie Logan, one of the Fed system's more influential voices on financial markets, caused investors to undercut the likelihood of further Fed rate increases. "If long-term interest rates remain elevated because of higher term premiums, there may be less need to raise the fed funds rate," said Logan, who has been among the more hawkish officials in supporting the need for continued rate increases. Since the Fed last raised its policy interest rate a quarter of a percentage point in July, long-term bond yields have risen a full percentage point, a fast rate of change for a massive market. A rise in the so-called “term premium," if it proves persistent, could put an enduring drag on the economy and perhaps give the Fed less reason to raise its own policy rate.

AI’s deflationary winds will blow away profits

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The prevailing expectation for artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) impact on humans is laden with doom. Yet the history of technological innovation suggests humans will see at least one tangible benefit from AI: lower prices for what they consume. One innovation that could give consumers an advantage over companies is AI agents. Streaming services like Netflix (NFLX.O) and Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) Disney+ could also suffer if AI agents take off. Junior lawyers, call centre operators and advertising copywriters, to name but a few, should probably be afraid, very afraid of AI’s looming threat.

We needn’t brace for the bubble to pop or fear an uptick in popular disillusionment with the technology. AI has only recently exploded into public view. When OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, few people outside industry had heard of large language models, let alone used one. “In 20 years following the internet space,” wrote a UBS analyst, “we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app.” Venture capitalists poured more than $40 billion into AI enterprises. Chipmaker Nvidia saw a huge spike in its share price, briefly taking it to a trillion-dollar market capitalization, and Meta announced its plan to spend $33 billion on its “build-out of AI capacity.”

A federal appeals court on Wednesday said the Justice Department can resume using classified documents seized from former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate in its criminal investigation. The appeals court panel, comprised of two Trump appointees and one Obama appointee, thoroughly rejected Trump’s position on the classified documents and parts of Cannon’s reasoning for issuing her original order. The appeals court said that among the factors under consideration were whether or not Trump had individual interest or need for the classified documents, which the district court had not mentioned in its analysis. The Justice Department previously said that its criminal investigation would look into identifying anyone who accessed the classified materials, whether they had been compromised and whether additional classified materials were missing. The ruling by the appeals court was the second legal blow to Trump on Wednesday.

After the 2020 pandemic bump, we expect monthly digital gaming usage will see minimal growth through the end of our forecast (1.1% in 2022 and 0.9% in 2023). Overall, there will be more than 29.6 million monthly US esports viewers in 2022, amounting to over 49.9% of all GVC viewers. But this growth won’t last too long, as monthly digital gamers are expected to increase by just 1.1% in 2022.
