In late March – over the objections of prosecutors who fought to have the convictions upheld – Delaware County Judge Mary Alice Brennan vacated the trio’s convictions and granted their request for a new trial. CNN —After a man wrongfully spent 37 years in prison for rape and murder, the Tampa City Council unanimously voted Thursday to approve a $14 million settlement in a federal lawsuit. Robert DuBoise, who was convicted of the August 1983 rape and murder of 19-year-old Barbara Grams in Tampa Heights, was exonerated in September 2020 after DNA evidence established that he did not commit the crimes. That made him the 30th person exonerated from Florida’s death row, according to the Innocence Project of Florida, which assisted with DuBoise’s case. CNN has reached out to the Innocence Project of Florida for comment on the settlement. During the city council meeting, council member Charlie Miranda commented on what DuBoise has lost through the wrongful conviction.

The pending perjury trial of three retired Philadelphia police detectives could prove an exception, if they themselves are not cleared by alleged mistakes by District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office. Former detectives Martin Devlin, Manuel Santiago and Frank Jastrzembski have asked a judge to dismiss the case. That trial testimony was still fair game when Krasner, a civil rights lawyer focused on criminal justice reform, took office in 2018. He charged the Wright detectives in 2021, days before the five-year deadline expired. Last year, a mistake by prosecutors sank a police perjury case in Manhattan, when a judge halted the trial over their failure to turn over evidence to the defense.

LOUIS (AP) — A Missouri prosecutor now believes that inmate Marcellus Williams is innocent of the crime that landed him on death row and very nearly cost him his life, and he is seeking to overturn Williams' conviction. Gayle, a social worker and one-time St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter, was killed at her home in 1998. Williams’ girlfriend asked him why he would wear a jacket on such a hot day. They cited testimony from Henry Cole, who shared a St. Louis cell with Williams in 1999 while Williams was jailed on unrelated charges. Last February, a St. Louis judge overturned the conviction of Lamar Johnson, who spent nearly 28 years in prison for a killing he always said he didn't commit.

The Los Angeles Innocence Project has taken up the case of Scott Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson. The only evidence linking Sandra Hemme to the 1980 killing of St. Joseph library worker Patricia Jeschke is the “wildly contradictory” and “factually impossible” statements she made to detectives while she was a patient at a psychiatric hospital, her attorneys say. The hearing to present evidence of her innocence was granted after her attorneys filed a 147-page petition laying out their claims. If Hemme is exonerated, her prison term would mark the longest known wrongful conviction of a woman in U.S. history. Leonard Allan Cure, 53, died on Monday after a Camden County sheriff's deputy shot him; the officer has not been officially identified. The Camden County Sheriff's Office said in a posting online the video was released because of rumors and misinformation, but did not elaborate. A representative for the sheriff's office did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment on Wednesday. The deputy later told Cure on the video that Cure was driving 100 miles per hour (160 kph) on Interstate 95 in southern Georgia. Cure's family watched the video Wednesday at a Georgia Bureau of Investigation office with their attorney just before it was released by Camden County, in southern Georgia.

A man who was wrongfully convicted and spent more than 16 years in prison before being released in 2020 was fatally shot on Monday by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia during a traffic stop, the authorities said. An altercation ensued, and the deputy killed Cure, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). In Monday's incident, the GBI said the deputy had told Cure that he was under arrest but Cure failed to comply with the officer's requests and assaulted him. Before shooting, the deputy used a Taser and a baton in an effort to subdue Cure, the agency said. It said in a statement on Monday that Cure was traveling to see his mother in south Florida when the incident occurred.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who spent nearly 30 years in prison for kidnapping, robbery and rape has been declared innocent and freed, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday. DNA testing helped exonerate Gerardo Cabanillas in a 1995 attack on a couple sitting in a parked car in the city of South Gate, the county district attorney's office said in a statement. Cabanillas was convicted in 1996 and spent 28 years in prison. DNA testing on the rape kit showed that two other people committed the assault, the group said in a statement. No other suspects were ever arrested, although one man later confessed to committing one of the crimes, the Innocence Project said.
