"Since India is a strong secular growth market, we would say the mid and small-cap [market] is the place to be. Against that backdrop, he named one ETF to play this small-cap corner of the market: the iShares MSCI India Small-Cap ETF . For investors who want to invest in large-cap stocks, he recommends the iShares MSCI India ETF . A third ETF that Jayaraman likes is the WisdomTree India Earnings Fund , which tracks an index that measures the performance of companies traded in India that are profitable. While both funds invest in emerging market stocks, the International Opportunities Fund also has stocks of companies in developed countries outside the United States.

The Biden administration has encouraged American companies to move electronics and technology manufacturing operations out of China and into friendlier countries, particularly Vietnam and India in Asia-Pacific. Vietnam's head startIndia and Vietnam are attractive manufacturing alternatives for foreign investors and companies, due in part to low labor costs. Import taxes remain highOne hurdle for India's manufacturing hub ambitions is the country's 10% import duty for information and communication technologies. India's import taxes were intended to protect domestic manufacturers, but lowering those duties will be part of the government's efforts to attract foreign firms to manufacture goods within the country. For example, India in January lowered import taxes for certain metal and plastic parts used in manufacturing mobile phones from 15% to 10%.

India's economic prospects are shining bright, attracting global investors eager to capitalize on the country's immense growth potential. The International Monetary Fund expects India's real gross domestic product (GDP) to expand by 6.5% in 2024. However, tapping into these opportunities as a foreign investor is not as straightforward as buying shares listed on the Indian stock exchanges. This allows investors outside India to buy shares more easily. ADRs are a way for investors to own shares in a foreign company, with the shares themselves held by a U.S. bank.

U.S. firms are increasingly viewing China as a risky bet for their supply chains — neighbor India is set to benefit as companies look elsewhere to set shop. As many as 61% of the 500 executive-level U.S. managers surveyed by UK market research OnePoll said they would pick India over China if both countries could manufacture the same materials, while 56% preferred India to serve their supply chain needs within the next five years over China. The survey showed that 59% of the respondents found it "somewhat risky" or "very risky" to source materials from China, compared with 39% for India. At least a quarter of the executives who participated in the independent, third party survey, commissioned by marketplace India Index in December, do not currently import from either China or India. "Companies are seeing India as a long-term investment strategy as opposed to a short-term pivot to avoid tariffs," said Samir Kapadia, CEO of India Index and managing principal at Vongel Group, in an exclusive interview with CNBC.

London CNN —India’s stock market is booming as investors take a chance on one of the few bright spots in a fragile global economy. The country’s stocks are so hot that India is now home to the world’s fourth most valuable equity market, behind only the United States, China and Japan. The total value of Indian equities has hit $3.5 trillion, greater than the value of Europe’s two biggest stock markets, in the UK and France, according to data from Refinitiv. Bright prospectsThe surge in Indian equities is a reflection of the strength and potential of the country’s economy, according to economists and fund managers. “The Indian equity market is the classic example of ‘expensive for a reason’,” he said.

They are lured by a country whose potential as an alternative investment destination to China increasingly outweighs the local challenges of doing business. India’s $3 trillion economy is forecast to grow by 6.5% this fiscal year, continuing to outpace the rest of the world. Executives and investors also see a business-friendly government that is likely to remain in power for the next half-decade. Morgan Stanley analysts and strategists expect India to become the world’s third-largest economy and stock market before the end of the decade. The India risk premium is rapidly disappearing.

Gautam Adani’s woes were in banks' plain sight

MUMBAI, Feb 8 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Gautam Adani’s recent woes have vindicated persistent doubts in India about the tycoon’s rise. The Indian group dismisses those claims as a “malicious combination of selective misinformation and stale, baseless and discredited allegations”. By contrast, other big Indian groups like Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries (DBKGn.DE) and those carrying the Tata name are more popular with institutional investors. Fee-hungry international banks were much less picky. Deutsche, Barclays and StanChart pocketed $57 million of the $260 million of investment banking revenue generated by the Adani group since Dealogic records began.
Morgan Stanley economists forecast its stock market will be the world’s third largest before the end of 2030. For those who passively track stock market indexes, the controversy engulfing Adani, briefly the world’s third richest man, may act as a deterrent from an already expensive market. The newish chair of India’s securities regulator, Madhabi Puri Buch, has already wielded a stick at credit rating agencies to instil better market discipline. In the meantime, the turmoil is a reminder to investors of the danger of investing blindly in emerging markets. HONG KONG/MUMBAI, Jan 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Gautam Adani’s financing options are narrowing fast. That leaves it dependent on a safety net provided by Indian banks. Those concerns exploded after Hindenburg Research last week declared the Indian group was making extensive use of tax havens and “pulling the largest con in corporate history” – allegations Adani dismissed as “misinformation” and “stale, baseless and discredited”. Lending more to the group would protect the capital that banks already have at risk in projects under construction. Shares of Gautam Adani’s listed companies have lost a combined $48 billion in market capitalisation since Jan. 25.

Analysts expect foreign investors to continue cutting their exposure to India over the next six months, but they say the market could perform better in the second half of the year. India’s stock market was one of the few bright spots in Asia last year. But high valuations and the increasing attractiveness of China mean investors should expect a bumpy first half, according to analysts. The MSCI India index rose 1.6% in 2022, compared with a 22% decline in the comparable benchmark for China. While China was struggling with the economic impact of its zero-Covid policy and a sharp slowdown in the property sector, India’s economy performed well as the pandemic eased.
