More than 90 flights from Indian airports have received bomb threats in just over a week, including about 50 on Saturday and Sunday alone, according to local media reports. Bomb threats against airlines are taken especially seriously in India, which was rattled by a series of bombings and hijackings from the 1970s to 1990s. Two days later, the British air force dispatched a fighter jet to intercept an Air India Boeing 777 en route to London. Air India said it would consider legal action against those responsible and was cooperating with the authorities to identify the perpetrators. Police in Mumbai have arrested one person on suspicion of posting bomb threats against at least three flights, Kinjarapu said Wednesday in a post on X.

CNN —Twin bomb threats hit Indian airliners on opposite sides of the globe on Tuesday, forcing an emergency landing in the Arctic and fighter jets to scramble in Asia – the latest in a series of similar hoax scares for the country’s airlines. On Tuesday, an Air India flight from New Delhi to Chicago made an emergency landing in Iqaluit, Canada’s northernmost city. Air India flight 127 was the “subject of a security threat posted online” and diverted “as a precautionary measure,” the airline said. Multiple flights by Indian carriers have been delayed or diverted due to false bomb threats since Monday. The Air India emergency landing in Canada comes as tensions rise between the two countries after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, on Monday.

Air India Express operates more than 2,500 flights each week, servicing 45 domestic and international airports, according to its website. Around 100 cabin crew called in sick “at the very last minute” late on Tuesday, a source familiar with the incident told CNN. Since then, the Indian conglomerate has announced plans to merge Air India Express with AIX Connect, another of Air India’s subsidiary carriers. Air India Express said in Thursday’s statement that passengers whose flight is canceled, or delayed by more than three hours, can get a full refund or reschedule their flight for free. Air India will support the budget carrier through the current disruption by operating flights on 20 of its routes, it added.

Ameen Sayani, a pioneering radio presenter who drew generations of listeners in India with his melodic voice on a radio show that became a national phenomenon, died on Tuesday. Born in 1932, Ameen Sayani was introduced to radio by his elder brother who was an English-language presenter. In 1952, Ameen became one of the first voices to be heard on the airwaves in Asia by starting the radio program for which he became the most famous, “Binaca Geetmala,” showcasing Bollywood music. He hosted the program on Radio Ceylon, one of the oldest radio stations in the world, based in what is now Sri Lanka. The show was later moved to All India Radio, the state-owned public broadcaster.

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — India’s newest airline will buy 150 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, in the first major announced sale for the manufacturer since a panel blew out of another Max model in midflight earlier this month, the airline announced Thursday. Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube announced the order of the Boeing 737 Max 10 and 737 Max 8-200 planes at an airshow in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad. It currently operates a fleet of 22 Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 8-200 planes. Travel bookings to the Maldives tumbled following a diplomatic row that erupted last week after a series of posts appeared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on India Prime Minister Narendra Modi's account. Amid reports that thousands of Indian travelers have canceled trips to the Maldives, one prominent Indian travel booking website, EaseMyTrip, announced it is suspending flight bookings from India to the Maldives. Prosecutors did not name the Indian official or the target, although they did describe the latter as a U.S. citizen of Indian origin. The Indian official is described in the related indictment as a "senior field officer" with responsibilities in "security management" and "intelligence" employed by the Indian government who "directed the plot from India." Akasa told the court it cancelled 600 flights in August and would be forced to cancel up to 700 more in September if the resignations continue, the person added. Akasa has dragged the pilots, many of whom have joined rival Air India Express, to court and initiated legal proceedings against the aviation regulator to enforce the notice period. The notice period ranges between 6-12 months, depending on the pilot's rank, according to the aviation regulator. Morgenshtern says the rise in outbound tourism from India is the result of investment not just by the government but by private airlines as well. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), the top government body for capital acquisition approvals for the Indian military, approved the orders worth 705 billion rupees ($8.52 billion) for all its services, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. The list of purchases approved included 200 additional BrahMos missiles, 50 utility helicopters and electronic warfare systems for the navy. All three Indian military services have been using versions of the missile for over a decade.
