CNN —Speaker Mike Johnson and the GOP are feeling increasingly bullish about holding onto the House of Representatives, believing they have defied political gravity in key suburban seats as President-elect Donald Trump powered his party toward what may become a full sweep of Washington. But House Republicans and Democrats alike privately believe the GOP will maintain control, according to a half-dozen senior campaign operatives. “We’re going to hold the House,” one senior GOP campaign official said Wednesday. However, House Democrats insist it’s too early for a post-mortem. “We need to pitch a perfect game and that probably won’t happen,” a senior House Democrat campaign official said.

WASHINGTON — Americans are poised to elect a new Congress, with control of both chambers at stake as every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up before voters on Election Day. Republicans favored to win the SenateIn the Senate, Democrats currently have a 51-49 edge, but Republicans are favored to capture the majority. They’re all but guaranteed to win an open seat in ruby-red West Virginia, with Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin retiring. If Harris wins, Republicans will need one more seat in addition to West Virginia to capture the Senate. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide a thorny legal dispute from Louisiana involving the state's effort to draw a congressional district map while navigating claims it is unlawfully considering race. One lawsuit claimed that the state had to draw a map containing two majority Black districts to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. A federal court struck the new map down, but with time running out to finalize the congressional districts before this year’s elections, state officials successfully asked the Supreme Court to put the lower court decision on hold in May. The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority that, in a surprising move, buttressed the federal Voting Rights Act in 2023 in another racial gerrymandering case involving the congressional map in Alabama. The court will hear oral arguments and issue a ruling in the Louisiana case during its current term, which ends in June.

As the battle for Congress comes to a close, here are five things to watch:1. Republicans have long been concerned about Democrats’ massive fundraising advantage in House and Senate races. Nearly $1.6 billion has been spent on ads in Senate races since Labor Day, with Democrats spending $803 million and Republicans spending $758 million, according to AdImpact. GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that.
