“Far too often, patients relying on federal government health care programs are forced to accept bureaucratic, one-size-fits-all coverage,” Crapo said. But Trump’s lack of specificity about health care could empower Oz to fill in the blanks. Oz said on an AARP questionnaire: “We can expand Medicare Advantage plans. If Oz is confirmed and chooses to push more people into Medicare Advantage, as he has pitched, he may not have too hard a time. “In our focus groups, people say they’re satisfied with both traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage, and they make their choices based on different preferences,” Neuman said.

Its CEO, however, was paid a relatively modest five figures at OpenAI in 2023, filings show. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was paid $76,001 in compensation in 2023 to lead what's now one of the most valuable startups in the world, the company's tax filings for the year showed. During a hearing before a senate judiciary subcommittee in May 2023, Altman said he gets "paid enough for health insurance" and that he receives no equity in OpenAI. Bloomberg estimated in March 2024 that the CEO is worth at least $2 billion, not including any stake he may have in OpenAI. Altman denied during an all-hands meeting with employees that there were plans for him to receive a "giant euqity stake," CNBC reported.

CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Even though Nvidia's third-quarter revenue soared 94% on an annual basis, it's a slower pace than Nvidia's growth in the previous three quarters, when sales rose 122%, 262%, and 265%, respectively, as CNBC's Kif Leswing notes. The same goes for Nvidia's forward guidance: A growth of around 70% for current-quarter sales, compared with a year earlier. CNN —Social Security is by far one of the most popular government programs in the United States because it is critical for so many retirees’ financial security. More than half of non-retired US adults (53%) overall said they expect they will need to use Social Security to pay for necessary expenses, according to a new survey from Bankrate. Social Security benefits only replace a portion of Americans’ pre-retirement income. Indeed, only 31% of the non-retired adults surveyed said they are not planning to rely on Social Security benefits in retirement, with just 14% saying they will “not (be) at all” reliant on them. Their “normal retirement age” is 67 for the purposes of collecting Social Security benefits.

TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. Chris Unger | Ufc | Getty ImagesThere's considerable uncertainty over the contents of a future Republican tax package and the fate of the EV credit, experts said. She was getting ready to buy one thanks to the $7,500 EV credit, which made the vehicles more affordable, she said. To wait and buy in 2025 is "too big of a gamble" given Trump's antipathy toward the EV credit, she said. There's no question there's real risk in the EV credit going away.

Benefits enrollment season is here, and with it comes an opportunity for workers to tune up their workplace savings plans and sock away more money on a tax-favored basis. Traditional tax-deferred accounts, like 401(k) plans and individual retirement accounts, are just the beginning for savers. As tempting as it may be for savers to plow money into HSAs and other tax-favored accounts, they'll need to draw up a strategy before they do so. They can also earmark additional funds toward 529 college savings plans and taxable brokerage accounts. In a tax-deferred account, investors won't be on the hook for the tax bill until they begin drawing down from it.

Next year, Trump’s Treasury secretary will act as the quarterback, executing his economic gameplan. When Tomas Gorny started a tech business in 2001, he wasn't thinking about becoming a billionaire someday. Gorny started a business called Ipower, which sold software that helped people build their own websites. Six years later, he sold Ipower to web hosting company Endurance International for a reported $100 million. Perhaps ironically, Gorny says the more modest goal helped helped him grow his company's bottom line far more effectively. Once he released his more developed products, Ipower started adding hundreds of new customers per day, he says.

Under Trump, the U.S. Department of Education is likely to abandon its efforts to deliver wide-scale student loan relief , experts say. It has done so mostly by improving existing student loan relief programs that had long been plagued by problems, including the Public Service Loan Forgiveness initiative and income-driven repayment plans. In June, U.S. District Judge Daniel Crabtree in Wichita, Kansas, described student loan forgiveness as having an "irreversible impact," in his decision to block one of the Biden administration's relief measures. For example, in February, some borrowers saw their debts reinstated under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. In a new report, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau cites, among the errors reported by student loan borrowers, "balance reinstatements," in which a loan servicer tacks a loan balance back on to one's account.

Housing seems to be slightly more affordable for Gen Z renters than it was for millennials at the same age. The percentage of rent-burdened millennials — renters putting more than a third of their income toward housing — peaked at 62% in 2011, according to a recent Zillow study. And although rents remain high, slightly fewer Gen Zers (those ages 18 through 25) are rent burdened today. As of 2022, the latest data available, 58% of Gen Z renters nationwide were rent-burdened, while 60% of millennials experienced rent burden at the same age in 2012, according to Zillow. According to Zillow's analysis, there are a number of major U.S. cities where it's easier for Gen Z to afford rent than it was for millennials at the same age.

New York CNN —Target is expecting a surprisingly weak holiday shopping season, a warning sign for the retail industry. The holiday shopping season is pivotal for retailers. While Target can survive a weak holiday season, many smaller companies depend on strong sales during the holidays. But Target has also slumped because of its merchandise mix and higher prices compared to rivals like Walmart. Walmart raised its financial outlook, a signal it expects a strong holiday shopping season.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesDonald Trump's U.S. election victory has ratcheted up concerns about higher prices, prompting strategists to rethink the outlook for global bond yields and currencies. Trump's return to the White House is seen as likely to throw a wrench in the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting cycle, potentially keeping an upward bias on Treasury yields. Bond yields tend to rise when market participants expect higher prices or a growing budget deficit. "Trump's election advances both possibilities as a trade war and increased fiscal spending work at cross purposes," he added. Germany's 10-year bond yield, the benchmark for the euro zone, stood at 2.337% on Wednesday, marginally lower for the session.

More than a third of all U.S. adults have a side hustle, recent data shows. The people who make the most money have something in common: lots of emotional intelligence. "A gigantic portion of [side hustle] work involves emotional intelligence pretty heavily," says M.K., who ran Austin-based customer experience consulting firm The Heart Company for eight years before joining Indeed. The more you understand what other people need in their lives, the more you can build your product or service to be a useful solution, he notes. "I'm skeptical he'll actually do it," Johnson said of Trump's tariff policy. With all of these negative implications, Johnson isn't convinced that Trump's tariffs will be as drastic as they were presented on the campaign trail. Mass deportation is a logistical nightmareTrump's mass deportation plans don't make economic sense to Johnson, either. It's still too early to predict how Trump's policies will pan out, but for now, Johnson is seeing drastic barriers to Trump's tariff and immigration plans. Should Trump go through with his tariff and immigration policies, it'll be up to the American people to judge their efficacy and implementation.
