Mauro Pimentel/AFP/Getty ImagesThe moment was a fluke, the type of logistical error that’s almost inevitable at gatherings of almost two dozen world leaders. Yet it was difficult to ignore the impression it left: that Biden is disappearing from view as the world turns its attention to his successor. What members of Biden’s team have been willing to acknowledge is how little they actually know about what Trump and his team may be planning. In Lima and Rio de Janiero, Biden fielded no questions from the press and his aides spoke only off-camera. Reporters had opportunities to ask Biden questions at the G20 summit in Rome in 2021, in Bali in 2022, and in Vietnam in 2023, following the summit’s conclusion in India the prior day.

Ukraine can defeat Russia if it and its Western backers learn from America's failure in the Vietnam War, a Ukrainian security expert argues. Danylyuk attributes America's failure in Vietnam to a "protracted multi-dimensional strategy by the Soviet Union, on whose help it was completely dependent." Crucial ways to defeat Russia's invasion can be found in the Soviet Union's multi-pronged strategy in Vietnam, analyst Oleksandr Danylyuk says. AP Photo/John T. WheelerThe first prong of this strategy would be to "stabilize the frontline and to render any successful offensive actions by Russian troops impossible." "The only explanation for the lack of a mass anti-war movement and large-scale protests is the absence of an organized and popular opposition in Russia," Danylyuk said.

Vietnam's long wait for emerging market status could soon be over. The Southeast Asian nation is currently classified as a frontier market and has been on the FTSE emerging market watchlist since 2018. An upgrade to emerging market status could see global funds pouring billions into Vietnam's financial market which currently has a market value just north of $200 billion. Speaking to CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" before the confirmation, Maybank Investment Bank Vietnam's Head of Equity Research Thanh Quan Trong said that the FTSE upgrade for Vietnam to emerging market status could come as early as September 2025. "We are seeing good progress in Vietnam fixing the regulatory bottlenecks to get the market upgraded to emerging market status," Trong told CNBC.

After a sweeping look at global trade shifts, JPMorgan strategists have concluded that some of Apple's Chinese suppliers could benefit from the trend of supply chain diversification. The Oct. 18 report looked at 10 aspects of "the great supply chain relocation and the rise of trading blocs." The analysis ranged from China's dominance in the global supply chain and overcapacity concerns, to U.S. policy. Calls for supply chain diversification picked up during the Covid-19 pandemic. "Further, they highlight names that could benefit from Apple's supply chain relocation," the report said.

I didn't have a car, and doing work exchanges kept my fixed costs a fraction of what I spent in the US. My mindset was also different: I didn't feel the need to spend money to have fun like I do at home. But the mindset I had while living abroad is what really helped me save: I didn't feel the need to spend money to enjoy myself. I spent one summer living in New York City thanks to a work exchange I found on that same website. The traveler's mindset I had while living abroad encouraged me to explore, get creative, and find fun in the simplest activities.

Hanoi, Vietnam AP —Vietnam elected Luong Cuong, a military general, as its new president on Monday, the fourth official to fill the largely ceremonial role in 18 months. The role of the general secretary is the most powerful position in Vietnam while the presidency is mostly ceremonial and involves meeting foreign dignitaries. Vietnam's Luong Cuong takes his oath as Vietnam's President during the autumn opening session at the National Assembly in Hanoi on October 21, 2024. When he became the new general secretary, he promised to maintain the anti-corruption fight. “The installation of Luong Cuong as president is yet another example of the expansion of Vietnam’s police state,” he said.

Smart glasses, many with components made in China, are emerging as an up-and-coming category as the fall consumer technology product season gets underway. Snap has revealed augmented reality glasses ; Meta is expected to do so at its own event starting Sept. 25. The Facebook-parent's Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are already seeing traction, HSBC's Frank He, head of technology hardware research for mainland Chinese stocks, pointed out in a report earlier this month. The roughly $300 Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses allow users to take pictures, short video clips, listen to music and interact with Meta's AI features, according to promotional materials. For the year through July, the optical company's non-smartphone camera module shipments surged about 61%, which HSBC attributes to "brisk sales" of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

Perhaps most surprisingly, "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" is not as disastrous as the marketing might suggest. Some believe Millennium Media made "The Crooked Man" on a small budget with the sole intention of keeping the rights to Hellboy. Adverse weather from Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, has killed hundreds of people in Vietnam and Thailand, and floodwaters from swollen rivers have inundated cities in both countries. The flooding in Myanmar began last Monday, with at least 74 people killed by Friday, based on state media reports. Myanmar has been in turmoil since a military coup in February 2021, and violence has engulfed large parts of the country. “Central Myanmar is currently the hardest hit, with numerous rivers and creeks flowing down from Shan hills,” the OCHA said. State media also reported that five dams, four pagodas and more than 65,000 houses were destroyed by the flooding.

CNN —At least 74 people have died and scores more are still missing in Myanmar following heavy flooding and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi, state media reported on Sunday. The flooding across the civil war-torn country has impacted more than 450 villages and wards, according to Myanmar News Agency (MNA). Images from news agency AFP showed submerged homes and vehicles in the city of Taungoo, an hour south of the capital Naypyidaw. Flood-affected residents line up for food at a temporary camp in Taungoo, Myanmar, on September 14, 2024. While developed nations bear a greater historical responsibility for the human-induced climate crisis, developing nations and small-island states are suffering the worst impacts.
