President-elect Donald Trump’s "border czar" said Thursday that the use of family detention centers for migrants is “on the table,” raising the possibility that the practice ended by the Biden administration could return as early as next year. Josh Edelson / AFP - Getty ImagesDuring the first Trump administration, Homan backed the “zero tolerance” policy that sparked bipartisan outcry. Homan said Thursday that he does not foresee migrant children being separated from their parents on a large scale in Trump's deportation effort. Homan said Thursday that he is in favor of challenging that legal framework, which would complicate using any family detention centers. “We have challenged family detention in the past.

NYU had the most international students in the US – more than 27,000 – during the last academic year. WASHINGTON — The Democratic-led Senate confirmed the 235th federal judge nominated by President Joe Biden, marking a milestone for the outgoing occupant of the White House by giving him one more than former President Donald Trump secured. The latest confirmation Friday could be Biden's last, meaning he will leave office having secured one Supreme Court justice, 45 appeals court judges, 187 district court judges and two judges on the U.S. Court of International Trade. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer heralded the vote as “historic” as the gavel fell to some applause in the Senate chamber. “The majority has now confirmed more judges under President Biden than any majority has confirmed in decades. “These men and women have the power to uphold basic rights or to roll them back,” the White House said in a fact sheet.

Oscar Andrade says every day is an opportunity to rescue migrants in the Arizona desert, where temperatures exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit this year. For Andrade, the number of sets of migrant remains is a cause for worry. According to the researchers’ data, the largest discrepancies in numbers occurred in 2021 and 2020, when Pima County recorded 225 and 206 migrant deaths, respectively, compared with Border Patrol data, which totaled 78 and 43. Border Patrol changes and their impactMartinez and his team of researchers noted that the discrepancies in the numbers of migrant deaths between coroners' offices and Border Patrol began to increase in 2013 and have not stopped growing. Under a border security initiative that ended in 2012, Border Patrol was responsible for trying to find as many deaths as possible in border counties.

— As President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration solidifies its plan for mass deportations, local law enforcement agencies are preparing to ramp up a controversial program that allows them to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the ability to perform certain functions of an immigration officer. According to ICE, as of May 2024, law enforcement agencies in 21 states participated in the program. Other critics have also said the 287(g) program merely serves as a political messaging tool for conservative sheriffs. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of city resources in immigration enforcement.

Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

Laws sharply limit the roles that federal troops can fill in US law enforcement. National Guard troops that report to state governors can support law enforcement, but the Posse Comitatus Act bars active-duty and federalized Guardsmen from acting as law enforcement. "You can fill in the blank on who those might be, but probably more Republican governors that are more friendly to President Trump. Those who are less friendly to President Trump would maybe not be as interested in taking on this mission." Bond vigilantes may pressure Washington to address deficits, affecting fiscal policy decisions. Wall Street doesn't constantly look to Washington for investment advice or direction, but the bond market is one place where they definitely intercept. The tipping point would create headwinds for the bond market as bond prices drop. The deficit is another sore spot, as promised tax cuts could further shrink government revenue. And this must be done by showing how they will offset tax cuts and remain fiscally responsible.

Trump allies are discussing deportation and detention options, with tackling the US-Mexico border seen as a priority from Day 1. For some who’ve run afoul of Trump, the election results have sparked fresh worries that he may enter office looking for retribution. During the campaign, Trump has made different statements about whether he might target people who’ve upset him. Rep. Democrats centered their attacks against Brown on abortion, even though he said he would not support a federal ban. As President-elect Donald Trump doubles down on his mass deportation plan, some Republicans are trying to assuage fears amid growing questions of who will be forced out of the country. The prospect of mass deportations is generating fear and apprehension among families with noncitizen members and businesses that employ undocumented workers. The president-elect has also said he would withhold federal grants to police that don’t cooperate in his mass deportation plan as well as use the National Guard to carry it out. But not long ago, some Republicans have resisted Democratic administrations' attempts to prioritize certain immigrants over others for deportation. “If he deports violent criminals, gang leaders and drug leaders, people who committed violent crimes like rape or murder, isn’t that mass deportation?” Muniz asked.

The officials reiterated that the DHS has not yet seen a surge in migrants heading to the United States. Arizona voters approved a controversial ballot measure that will give state and local law enforcement greater authority to enforce immigration-related laws typically left to the federal government, NBC News projects. The lengthy ballot measure makes a number of changes to state law related to immigration. The measure also requires a court to kick out migrants convicted of illegal entry, allowing state and local law enforcement to deliver them to federal custody. While the ballot measure’s supporters have long argued for the need to make immigration law stricter, Republicans also hoped that the measure could help boost GOP turnout. And Arizona’s controversial attempt to enact stricter immigration laws in 2010 was partially blocked by the Supreme Court in part because the court found that federal immigration law pre-empted much of the legislation.
