Tim Walz touted Vice President Kamala Harris’ record of defending LGBTQ rights on Saturday night, pledging to a supportive crowd that she will advance their cause if elected president. He noted how Harris worked alongside President Joe Biden to issue executive orders protecting the rights of LGBTQ people in health care, the military and education. The organization also applauded her selection of Walz as her running mate, citing his own long record of supporting LGBTQ youth and backing same-sex marriage. Transgender youth rarely undergo gender-confirmation surgery anywhere. “President Trump will ensure all Americans are treated equally under the law regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation,” Leavitt said.

PARIS — Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment after a rain of criticism and false claims about her sex during the Paris Olympics, her lawyer said Sunday. The complaint was filed Friday with a special unit in the Paris prosecutor’s office for combating online hate speech, alleging “aggravated cyber-harassment” targeting Khelif, lawyer Nabil Boudi said. In a statement, he described it as a “misogynist, racist and sexist campaign” against the boxer. As is common in French law, the complaint doesn’t name an alleged perpetrator but leaves it to investigators to determine who could be at fault. False claims that Khelif was transgender or a man erupted online, and the International Olympic Committee defended her and denounced those peddling misinformation.

PARIS — Lin Yu-ting captured featherweight gold on Saturday, defeating Poland’s Julia Szeremeta and shaking off more than a week of specious allegations that she shouldn’t be fighting in the women’s division. The gold medalist is listed at 5-foot-9 and her Polish opponent at 5-foot-5, but the disparity appeared to be greater in real life, with Lin punching downhill and rarely being threatened. Lin and welterweight gold medalist Imane Khelif of Algeria have both dealt with a firestorm of questions from opponents wrongly questioning their gender since they entered Olympic competition. Questions surrounding their gender stemmed from a decision by the Russian-led International Boxing Association to disqualify them at last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi. The IBA removed those two fighters from a competition at the time, saying they had tests that questioned their gender eligibility.

Paris CNN —For two-time Olympic track and field champion Caster Semenya, Paris 2024’s boxing was unusually poignant. She took light welterweight gold on Friday night, besting her Chinese opponent in a dominant performance. But her Olympics have been marred by allegations over her gender, citing a 2023 decision by a now-discredited boxing regulator to bar her from a women’s tournament. Khelif was, “born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport,” with IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said. Female athletes of color have historically faced disproportionate scrutiny and discrimination when it comes to sex testing and false accusations that they are male or transgender. Since the Tokyo Games in 2021, track’s World Athletics tightened the eligibility rules for female athletes with DSD conditions. Male athletes are not required to regulate their natural levels of testosterone, and female athletes who do not have DSD conditions also can benefit. In this dysfunction, boxing eligibility rules have not kept pace with other sports, and the issues weren’t addressed ahead of the Paris Games. She challenged track and field’s initial testosterone rules passed in 2011 as a reaction to Semenya.

What does the Olympics controversy over Algerian boxer Imane Khelif have to do with J.K. Rowling’s home wallpaper? A representative for Rowling declined to comment on her wallpaper and the backlash to her posts about Khelif. LGBTQ people and groups like GLAAD have condemned Rowling’s views, calling them transphobic, and “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe spoke out against her in 2020. Some of Rowling’s defenders responded to the mold posts, suggesting that what people online claim is mold is actually wallpaper. One of the two female boxers at the center of an Olympic gender controversy pleaded with the public to “avoid bullying all athletes” Sunday night. The association alleged that the women failed to pass unspecified gender tests that found they had male chromosomes. The International Boxing Association, whose president is Umar Kremlev of Russia, reportedly an acquaintance of President Vladimir Putin, has had its legitimacy scrutinized in recent years. (In Olympic boxing, there are no third-place matches, so two bronze medals are awarded to the semifinal losers.) The news conference had been billed as an effort by international boxing authorities to clear up the reasons they banned two athletes from a women’s competition last year, and a chance to shed crucial light on what has become the biggest controversy at the Paris Olympics. Instead, the gathering started 90 minutes late, then veered into the chaotic almost immediately. And when it ended about two hours later, almost nothing about the controversy had been clarified at all. The head of the International Boxing Association, an organization no longer recognized by the International Olympic Committee to oversee the sport at the Games, had promised answers about why the organization excluded the two boxers, Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan. Instead, appearing on a giant video screen from a room decorated with religious iconography, the association’s Russian president, Umar Kremlev, delivered wild accusations, personal attacks and employed questionable language when detailing the two women's cases.

Imane Khelif of Algeria, the boxer at the center of a controversy involving eligibility and fairness that has made the women’s boxing tournament at the Paris Olympics a cultural flashpoint, advanced to the semifinals in her weight class on Saturday. The result guaranteed that Khelif, 25, will leave the Games with her first Olympic medal. But it also ensured that the furor over her participation will continue. The International Olympic Committee, which is overseeing the boxing competition in Paris after it revoked the I.B.A.’s authority, called the decision “arbitrary.” In recent days, the I.O.C. has strongly supported the boxers by stating flatly and repeatedly that they are women and not transgender.
