AdvertisementApple has increasingly used its own silicon chips in its devices in recent years. Apple says it has a "secret weapon" in its approach to making the chips that power many of its devices. The company also benefits from making chips strictly for its own use rather than being a traditional chip-maker that sells to other companies, Millet said. Apple's newest Macs are based on Apple's latest silicon chips, the M4 line. AdvertisementMillet said Apple silicon takes advantage of "three major components, the architecture, the design, and the process technology."

Britain inches towards right chipmaking niche

LONDON, May 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is taking a small step in the right direction. After much hesitation, Britain announced on Friday it would invest 1 billion pounds in its domestic semiconductor industry, with a focus on chip designs. Britain plays a relatively insignificant role in chip manufacturing, which is dominated by Taiwanese giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (2330.TW). With over 110 semiconductor design firms, Britain can probably claim to be Europe’s leader in the segment. Under Sunak’s plan, Britain will invest 200 million pounds by 2025, with the full 1 billion pounds achieved over the next decade.
Alibaba and Ant venture to launch RISC-V chips for payments

The development comes as Chinese companies continue to invest heavily in chips, in the wake of U.S. export restrictions targeting China's semiconductor sector. Alibaba is one of several Chinese tech companies to pour research and development resources into RISC-V, an alternate chip architecture. The open-source nature of RISC-V's design in theory makes it less susceptible to export restrictions. In 2019, Washington imposed export restrictions on China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL), which threw the company's access to ARM designs in limbo. In late 2022, the United States launched similar export restrictions on Chinese chip fabs and research labs.
