Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. After the S&P 500 knocked three stocks from its ranks last week, CNBC's Jim Cramer told investors why it is usually not a good idea to stick with these companies. "When you see a stock that gets expelled from the S&P 500, please don't bother to try to catch a bottom — you're most likely catching a falling knife," he said. The S&P 500 evaluates the performance of roughly 500 of the largest publicly traded stocks and is seen as a bellwether for the market. He also reviewed several other recent S&P 500 castoffs and found that most of those stocks have also underperformed. Although buying an index fund is usually considered passive investing, Cramer said the S&P 500 is more actively managed than many realize.

Meme stocks are having a moment, but the broader market is rallying as well. While GameStop's 74% rally got a lot of attention Monday ( "meme stocks are back!" ), the evidence indicates that a broad rally is dragging up a lot of stuff that hasn't been performing well this year. The S & P 600 Small Cap advance/decline is also near the highest levels since December, while the S & P Mid Cap 400 advance/decline line is at a new high. So when you hear the tired old refrain, "meme stocks are back," take a look at the rest of the market.

Seven stocks in the S & P 500 tend to rise alongside Tesla shares, according to an analysis of recent data by CNBC Pro . The share price performances of these S & P 500 stocks were highly correlated to Tesla's last month. However, unlike Tesla's more than 30% plunge this year, these stocks have either remained flat or have relatively modest negative returns. A correlation of zero would indicate no statistical link between the EV automaker's stock and the share price of the seven companies. The consensus upside potential for the stocks listed above was derived from FactSet's poll of analysts covering each stock.

LONDON (AP) — Amazon called off its purchase of robot vacuum maker iRobot on Monday, blaming “undue and disproportionate regulatory hurdles" after the European Union signaled its objection to the deal. The deal faced antitrust scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic, but most strongly in Europe, where regulators investigating competition concerns were expected to issue a final decision by Feb. 14. Amazon announced in 2022 that it would buy iRobot, maker of the circular-shaped Roomba vacuum, for $1.7 billion in cash. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesWhile British antitrust regulators cleared the purchase in June, it also still faced scrutiny in the U.S. by the Federal Trade Commission.
