A small group of stocks are on the verge of forming a worrisome chart pattern known as a "death cross ." A death cross occurs when a stock's 50-day moving average falls below its 200-day average. Baxter International Stock in medical equipment maker Baxter International is also on the verge of a death cross. Other stocks nearing a death cross chart pattern include Illinois Tool Works and Abbott Laboratories . While the golden cross suggests a potential uptrend, ITW is now approaching the bearish death cross chart pattern only five months later.

Stanley Black & Decker Why we own it: Stanley Black & Decker is in the later innings of a multi-year restructuring plan. But what if I told you this group shrunk its share count dramatically since 2019? The numbers tell the story: Lennar now has 276 million shares outstanding, down from 318 million five years ago. Other than Toll, most of the homebuilder management teams do not emphasize this fundamental change in share count. Management has been buying hand over fist since 2019, shrinking the share count to 215 million from 264 million. My rather unassailable conclusion is pretty simple: Check the share count before you buy a stock.

China's factory underperformance stood out once again and underlined its struggling recovery - perhaps the main driver of stalling industrial activity everywhere. With markets increasingly impatient at the patchy and underwhelming economic stimulus plans seen from Beijing so far, China stocks fell back (.CSI300), bucking Tuesday's wider Asia stocks rally. Sterling and UK stocks (.FTMC) fell back. Ride-hailing giant Uber's stock rose more than 2% before the bell and ahead of its earnings report. All three major averages advanced for the week, powered by strong mega-cap earnings and favorable inflation data. Looking to next week, earnings season enters its second half with the last of our mega-caps — Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) — set to report on Thursday. Thursday after the close brings us to the main events of the week: Earnings from Apple and Amazon. For those looking to review first quarter performance ahead of these releases, be sure to keep our first-quarter earnings report card handy.

Morning Bid: Volatile news, not markets

While the Federal Reserve is almost certain to raise interest rates again on Wednesday, the move could be its last. So in a holiday-strewn month around the world, the VIX (.VIX) - Wall St's so-called 'fear gauge' of the implied stock market volatility for the month ahead - hit its lowest level on Monday since November 2021. Even though it ticked back up a bit above 16 overnight, it remains three full points below its 33-year historical average. For macro markets, the Fed decision is complicated by the debt ceiling and banking backdrop. March job openings numbers later on Tuesday will give an indication of just how tight the labor market remains.
The biggest week of this earnings season showed us that things aren't as bad as many feared. The week ahead of earnings, including several more Club names, should tell us more. The results are always important, but it's the guidance and management commentary we will really hone in on to better understand the path ahead. In Amazon's case, a solid first quarter for its AWS cloud business was overshadowed by management seeing a material slowdown in April. ET: Nonfarm Payrolls Looking back It was the biggest week of this earnings season for the Club as several of our mega-cap holdings and industry bellwethers reported results.
Thanks to the Federal Reserve, the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank has ended up breaking positive for the stock market, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Wednesday. "When you go through all the ramifications of the SVB failure, they actually end up breaking positive, not negative, for the stock market — all because of the Federal Reserve," Cramer said. As a result, he said investors have turned to the Wall Street playbook on what to buy when there's an economic slowdown without inflation: tech stocks. This market may be mindless, but it's got muscle memory that says you reach for tech in a slowdown," Cramer said. "The Silicon Valley Bank fiasco was just the oxygen the tech bull needed to snap out of its funk and get back to work."
Reshoring declarations are amping up, as more companies look to return operations to the United States from overseas. Corporate reshoring announcements jumped 17% in the fourth quarter compared with the prior quarter and are now tracking nearly 300% higher than the fourth quarter of 2021, according to UBS. In fact, reshoring and foreign direct investments jobs reached a record of at least 360,000 jobs last year, according to the Reshoring Initiative. The move back to the U.S . can also be seen in corporate earnings, said Ron Graziano, managing director of global accounting and tax for Credit Suisse. The company's equipment is needed for big semiconductor manufacturing plants as companies test chips as they are produced, Snyder said.
Morning Bid: Fed fillip, double trouble, triple A

It looks less like fighting the Fed, than a mild disagreement. Powell didn't endorse that market view - which now has just one more quarter point rise to a terminal rate under 4.9% by May and 40 basis points of cuts from there by December. But he seemed ambivalent about investors' more optimistic take on disinflation and indicated the central bank was increasingly keeping its options open about a 'couple of hikes'. Meta's stock boomed as its earnings update showed stricter cost controls and a new $40 billion share buyback. With the risk around the BoE's split monetary policy council for a smaller quarter point move, it was the euro that looks set to emerge the winner of the three big central bank events.
While only six companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are reporting next week, about 20% of the S & P 500 reports, making it the biggest week of earnings this season. The Dow and the S & P 500 gained 2.2% and 2.9% this week, respectively, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 4.7%. The Fed's meeting Tuesday and Wednesday comes amid a flood of corporate earnings reports, with about 20% of the S & P 500 reporting that week. The most important day for earnings is Thursday, when Apple , Alphabet and Amazon report after the bell. The Nasdaq Composite was up 11% for the month as of Friday afternoon, well ahead of the 6.2% gain in the S & P 500. Traders have been watching the S & P 500 edge closer to the key threshold of 4,100 , its high from December. AAPL 1Y line apple Apple is also important because of the signals it can send about the strength of the consumer, supply chains and China's reopening.
A lot has been said about reshoring, as companies look to bring manufacturing back to their home countries, particularly the U.S. Reshoring is essentially companies returning operations to their original country from overseas. "The reshoring craze is real, especially as you continue to hear more and more about this general theme of deglobalization," he said. "They sell into the construction of the factory, they sell into the equipment of the factory, the automation of the factory." The company's equipment is needed for big semiconductor manufacturing plants as companies test chips as they are produced, Snyder said.
Several insiders of corporate America spent big on their own stock as part of their holiday shopping, often finding major discounts. This move is in addition to the roughly $2.3 million worth of shares that Soto scooped up earlier this year. The fintech stock has struggled mightily this year, falling more than 70% to trade below $5 per share. Insider buying and selling is a metric tracked by many professional investors as one measure of a company's quality. Melamed had previously been a seller, so whose recent moves represent a notable reversal, according to Verity.
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday identified three industrial stocks that he believes are worth owning next year, saying he expects them to outperform the sector's top performers in 2022. The best-performing industrial stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year have been Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin and Deere — up 36.9%, 35.6% and 25.7%, respectively. Looking ahead, though, Cramer said he'd prefer to own the likes of Caterpillar , Illinois Tool Works and railroad operator CSX . Illinois Tool Works shares are down more than 12% in 2022 because fears of an economic slowdown have trumped the company's actual results, Cramer contended. Transports such as CSX — down nearly 16% year to date — are "totally hated" on Wall Street, Cramer acknowledged.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has done so much better than the average semiconductor company, or even the above-average enterprise software company that it's insane that we even focus on some of the latter. The 600 companies formed in the last two years rent too much of your brain space even in passing. What enterprise software company can say that? As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio.
