The wife of an Illinois judge was arrested and charged with fatally shooting her husband, according to Illinois State Police. Megan Valentine, 44 of Albion, was arrested Tuesday after the body of Illinois Second Judicial Circuit Court Judge Michael J. Valentine was found outside of a home, per a news release from police. She was charged with first degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated domestic battery, according to court documents filed in Edwards County Thursday. He served as second circuit judge since 2022. Previously, he was elected to serve as a circuit judge in 2016, and also served as Edwards County State's Attorney.

Also Friday, amid mounting pressure, Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell announced he would retire by Aug. 31, saying it had become clear that he could not continue effectively in his role. The encounter ended with Grayson shooting Massey in the head. After shooting Massey, Grayson discouraged the other deputy from rendering aid, citing the severity of her injury, according to body camera video. The deputy still rendered aid and stayed with Massey until medical help arrived, prosecutors have said. On July 17, Grayson was fired from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, where he had been employed since May 2023.

According to an NBC News review of police hiring laws in Illinois, Grayson’s hiring did not appear to have violated state or local police hiring policies. Experts say the hiring standards in many small law enforcement agencies are often lower than those of large city agencies. Consider: More than $4 billion worth of unclaimed property was returned to people in fiscal year 2022, NAUPA said. Each state decides whether to reveal how much your unclaimed property is worth when you do your initial search.

CHICAGO (AP) — A group of voters trying to remove former President Donald Trump's name from Illinois' primary ballot over the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has taken its fight to court after the state's election board unanimously rejected its effort. The expected legal challenge was filed in Cook Court's circuit court Tuesday, hours after the bipartisan Illinois State Board of Elections voted to keep the Republican on the March 19 ballot. The five voters argue Trump is ineligible to hold office because he encouraged and did little to stop the Capitol riot. The Illinois voters, along with national voting advocacy group Free Speech for People, argued in their court petition for judicial review that the elections board has the authority to determine Trump's eligibility. Trump attorney Adam Merrill told reporters Tuesday he was pleased with the election board's decision and prepared to respond to any court action.

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois' election board on Tuesday is scheduled to consider whether to keep Donald Trump on the state’s primary ballot after a recommendation that he be removed over the Constitution's insurrection provision. That state's highest court found the 14th amendment barred Trump from the ballot over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The push has notched successes in Colorado and in Maine, where the Democratic secretary of state also recommended removing Trump from the ballot. The eight-member Illinois election board is split evenly between Democrats and Republicans. If the vote is tied 4-4, the effort fails and Trump’s name would remain on the ballot.
