Worse than those numbers, because teams have mounted comebacks facing such deficits, the Mets look like they have run out of gas. “Sean (Manaea) said it the other day,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said when asked if his rotation had hit a proverbial wall. “We’ve gone through a lot this year,” Peterson said, “and it’s made us who we are at this point.”The Mets are hoping to keep alive an improbable season that’s included Grimace and OMG. An Israeli-designed radar system encircling the island can detect passersby, in low visibility, from half a mile away. Often described as "butlers with badges," the Indian Creek police force is unlike most of its counterparts. The Indian Creek radar can detect objects on the water and use artificial intelligence to classify them according to the risk they pose. With the new security system, the Indian Creek police appear to have turbocharged their enforcement of regulations in the surrounding waters. Properties in the neighborhood are also being bought up by opaquely named LLCs tied to Indian Creek residents.

Opinion | Nate Silver on How Kamala Harris Changed the Odds

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

It’s a shame Gabino Iglesias’ ferocious new novel, “House of Bone and Rain,” couldn’t have been included as supplemental reading. “The Devil Takes You Home” (2022) was, like the two books that preceded it, a horror-noir thriller with elements of other genres thrown in. “House of Bone and Rain” ranges from vigilante thriller to supernatural horror to coming-of-age friendship saga with a strong dose of folklore fantasy. We had each other’s backs,” Gabe declares. So when Bimbo’s mother, Maria, is gunned down while working the door of a nightclub in Old San Juan, Gabe and his friends make a pact to track down the killers no matter the cost.

YOU LIKE IT DARKER: Stories (Scribner, 502 pp., $30) is an outstanding collection from Stephen King, the master of horror, that features 12 eerie tales full of darkness, loss, danger, resilience and even aliens. There are no throwaways here, but some stories merit individual attention. Its gradual slide into terror perfectly sets the tone for the entire collection. “The Fifth Step,” about a man who opens up to a stranger in a park, is a literary shanking — it’s fast and violent in equal measure. “On Slide Inn Road,” about a family that encounters two murderers while stuck on a country road, is a master class in tension and is full of King’s dark humor.

9 to 0 — I’m going to say that again — 9 to 0, ruled that states can’t keep Donald Trump off their ballots. It’s how — Trump has said to his loyalists, I am your retribution, so maybe we should just look at this as a blueprint for retribution. He’s going to end up — when he gives his big convention speech, he’s going to end up making promises on economic policy, domestic policy, and so on. ross douthatSo here’s why I’m sort of — Carlos, especially to your point — like, trying to focus us on the sharpest possible conflicts. At the center of this novel is a forbidden forest that sits at the northern edge of a nameless town. No one who sets foot in the wood returns, with the exception of Veris Thorn, who once entered, somehow survived and came back. The tyrant gives Veris only one day to recover them, and if she fails, he will kill her family. Fast-paced, tense, fantastical and uncanny, “The Butcher of the Forest” is a perfect mix of horror and fantasy. The perilous dimension hidden inside the forest is full of wicked shape-shifting beings, undead deer and other monstrosities, but it’s Mohamed’s beautiful prose and endearing characters that make this a powerful story.

When Aaliyah Iglesias was caught vaping at a Texas high school, she didn’t realize how much could be taken from her. ___E-cigarettes have inundated middle and high schools. The episode that got her in trouble happened elsewhere in Texas, at Athens High School, where her debate team was competing last February. She was sent to her district’s alternative school for 30 days, which was the minimum punishment for students caught vaping under Tyler schools' zero-tolerance policy. In a pilot program, the district installed vape sensors in bathrooms and cameras outside the doors.

Cristóbal Balenciaga: Secrets of his success

Yet the label’s origins were rather more discreet; founder Cristóbal Balenciaga was renowned for his privacy, secrecy and need for control over every aspect of the design process. “Even though Balenciaga was born very near to where I live in Spain, I didn’t know how important his figure was,” said Lourdes Iglesias, creator of “Cristóbal Balenciaga,” in an interview with CNN via a translator. Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1927, before the war in Spain forced him to move his business to Paris. “He liked to control everything.”The Balenciaga Maison allowed series’ costume designers, Bina Daigeler and Pepo Ruiz Dorado, access to their archives and museum. It’s clearly a very different era now than the one in which Cristóbal Balenciaga was working in.

Children’s books, which present subtle truths in simple terms, offer a valuable tool in retaining our moral bearings, especially amid a maelstrom of grief and rage. In the books I read with my son, I saw the Palestinian children’s authors of today doing something I recognize from my research on the Yiddish children’s literature of the previous century: striving to help children make sense of the world they stand to inherit while writing a better world into being. Instead of reinforcing conventional nationalism, these works followed the general tendency of Yiddish literature, art and film to explore how culture might define a nation. They were created to write a better world into being: Now we must use them to read a better world into being. Children’s literature can’t solve these problems.

Jeff Bezos has announced that he would be moving from Seattle to Miami. The moving news comes weeks after he snapped up a second mansion in Miami's "billionaire bunker." After 29 years in Seattle, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced on Thursday that he and his fiancé Lauren Sanchez would soon be moving to Miami. Bezos' announcement comes after the billionaire snapped up two massive mansions in Miami's "billionaire bunker" neighborhood over the past few months. In October, Bezos bought a 7-bedroom mansion for $79 million, which is next to another waterfront mansion Bezos bought for $68 million earlier in the summer.

The Braves, who trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, rallied for the two decisive unearned runs against ex-Brave Drew Smyly (11-10). Chicago upped the lead to 6-0 thanks to Cody Bellinger's run-scoring single in the fourth and an RBI single by Ian Happ in the sixth. It was the club's 300th home run, making the Braves only the third team to reach that milestone. Later in the frame, Olson added a run-scoring single, his major-league-best 134th RBI, and Marcell Ozuna followed with a run-scoring double off the left field wall.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Facing his possible removal from office, the president of the Spanish soccer federation refused to resign Friday despite an uproar for kissing a player on the lips without her consent after the Women's World Cup final. The president of Spain's women's league, Beatriz Álvarez, told Spanish state broadcaster RTVE that she was not surprised because Rubiales' "ego is above his dignity." The only relevant institution to remain silent has been European soccer body UEFA, for which Rubiales is a vice president. Rubiales, who led the Spanish players' union for eight years before taking over as federation president in 2018, is currently heading the UEFA-backed bid to host the men's World Cup in 2030. "The speech by Mr. Rubiales before the general assembly of the Spanish soccer federation is absolutely incompatible with representing Spanish sports and with the values of an advanced society like Spain's," Spain's Higher Council for Sports said.

In a meeting earlier this month, FIDE’s council approved the updated policy which will come into effect on August 21. The policy says that once a player informs FIDE they are changing their gender from male to female, they will be banned from competing in official women’s events. This is so insulting to cis women, to trans women, and to the game itself,” it wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “So FIDE just published (yesterday) a list of anti-trans regulations, like it was ‘the biggest threat of women in chess’. WA said the exclusion would apply to “male-to-female transgender athletes.”Advocates of banning transgender women from women’s sport have argued that transgender women have a physical advantage over cisgender women in sports.

[1/3] A Cruise self-driving car, which is owned by General Motors Corp, is seen outside the company?s headquarters in San Francisco where it does most of its testing, in California, U.S., September 26, 2018. Futuristic test vehicles from Cruise and Waymo are a common sight in some parts of San Francisco. The vote comes at a critical time for San Francisco, which is grappling with thousands of tech job losses, firms leaving the city, and COVID-era work-from-home policies that have contributed to a hollowed out downtown. loadingRamón Iglesias, another San Francisco resident, said that though he’d seen the videos and some erratic behavior from the cars, he supports the expansion and worries any further obstacles could drive tech companies away. “We have a very strong Luddite segment here in San Francisco and you see places like Las Vegas and Miami go out of their way to embrace tech,” said Iglesias, a data scientist.
