I went to Sky Lagoon in Iceland — a geothermal spa that cost me $222 for two people. The lagoon was less crowded than the more popular Blue Lagoon Spa. Just last week, Blue Lagoon guests had to be evacuated when one erupted nearby for the sixth time since the end of 2023.

CNN —After 800 years of calm, volcanoes have awakened in the Reykjanes Peninsula of Iceland — about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of the nation’s capital, Reykjavik. While there is no risk of a global calamity happening, researchers are now warning that new scientific evidence suggests the eruptions originating from the Reykjanes Peninsula could continue for years or even decades. But people staying there, with the possibility of a very rapid onset of volcanic activity, I don’t think that’s recommended. “The Reykjanes peninsula is exactly on this plate boundary,” he added, “and it seems that we are now witnessing the earliest part of a major eruption episode. Icelandic geoscientists and international collaborators are tracking the frequency and intensity of seismic activity and ground deformation in real time.

☆ Women in Iceland go on strike for a day to protest pay gap and violence

Tens of thousands of women across Iceland — including the prime minister — are expected to participate in a one-day strike Tuesday in protest of the ongoing gender pay gap and gender-based violence. It is expected to be the largest walkout by Icelandic women in almost 50 years, according to the strike's official website. Close to 90% of Iceland's female population went on strike on October 24, 1975, to demand gender equality. Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir told the Icelandic news site Iceland Monitor that she will refuse to work on the strike day and expects other women in government to join her "in solidarity with Icelandic women." In 2018, a University of Iceland study found that 40% of Icelandic women experience gender-based and sexual violence in their lifetime.

Dozens of countries including Ireland, Spain and the UK have tested a 4-day workweek, with overwhelmingly positive results: Businesses that participated in a six-month trial in the UK, which ended in December 2022, said switching to a 4-day workweek improved productivity, morale and team culture. Although no country has fully adopted a 4-day workweek, some countries are experimenting with one or have policies that allow workers to request a shorter schedule.
