☆ Maldives signs China military pact in further shift away from India

In January, Muizzu set a deadline of March 15 for the complete withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed in the archipelago nation, according to the president’s office. India has also given Maldives two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft, which are mainly used for marine surveillance, search and rescue operations and medical evacuations, Reuters reported. The new deal with China marks a significant shift in Maldives’ foreign policy from Muizzu’s pro-India predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. But Maldives has long found itself in the middle of a geopolitical tussle with both India and China vying for influence. China has increasingly expanded its footprint in Maldives, most visibly through large-scale infrastructure projects such as the $200 million China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.

Opposition candidate Mohamed Muizzu led President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the first round three weeks ago by 6 percentage points. Thousands turned out early at over 586 polling stations across 187 islands known for their sun-kissed beaches and resorts. Maldivians were also voting at polling stations in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Britain and Abu Dhabi.

The embassy advised Sudanese visa applicants without passports to apply for a new passport with the Sudanese embassy in Cairo, despite Egyptian authorities issuing a raft of entry requirements for refugees from the country. Mohamed was among several Sudanese visa applicants who told CNN they witnessed violence while attempting to flee the country. “They had to leave because it’s a life or death matter if they stayed (in Khartoum).”Alhaj Sharafeldin, a 25-year-old university graduate, told CNN he is "stranded in this war zone." “I’m here stranded in this war zone,” he told CNN.

"Turismul de vaccinare este o viziune a preşedintelui ţării, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Preconizăm să-l implementăm după modelul turismului medical", a declarat ministrul turismului, Abdulla Mausoom. "Programa 3V: vizită, vaccin, vacanţă" va fi lansat când toţi locuitorii din Maldive, cu o populaţie de 540.000 de persoane, vor fi complet vaccinaţi", a spus el.Ministrul a explicat că turiştii vor putea alege vaccinul pe care îl preferă, dintre cele disponibile în ţară şi să rămână în arhipelag până vor primi a doua doză. "Complexele noastre hoteliere sunt perfect sigure pentru vaccinare. Turiştii pot rămâne între cinci şi opt săptămâni pentru a primi a doua doză, sau pot pleca şi să se întoarcă apoi pentru rapel", a precizat Maussom.Ministerul Turismul din arhipelag speră ca între timp să se rezolve penuria de vaccinuri pentru a putea da undă verde acestui plan.Insulele Maldive utilizează vaccinul Covishield, serul produs de Oxford în colaborare cu laboratorul anglo-suedez AstraZeneca şi cel elaborat de Institutul Serum din India (SII).Arhipelagul administrează şi doze importate de la laboratorul chinez Sinopharm şi Pfizer.În total, 40.230 de persoane din Maldive au fost complet imunizate, în timp ce 280.000 de localnici (52% din populaţie) şi de expatriaţi au primit prima doză de vaccin anti-COVID-19.De la începerea pandemiei, ţara a înregistrat 26.000 de contagieri şi 70 de decese asociate noului coronavirus.
