Tom Lee, Fundstrat's head of research, said in an Oct. 17 note to clients that the firm is opening a six-month "tactical overweight" on the homebuilding sector. The six-month timeline counts on a strong seasonal pattern where homebuilders tend to rally from late October to late April. While the reason for the historical trend is not clear, the fact that it currently coincides with a rate-cutting cycle for the Federal Reserve should lend homebuilders' stocks even more support, Lee said. "The Fed is cutting interest rates, at a time when U.S. housing has been in a recession. The sector exchange-traded funds highlighted by Lee include the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) , the SPDR S & P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) and the Invesco Building & Construction ETF (PKB) .

If Thursday's move into real estate stocks is reflective of a bigger trend, there's still time to make winning investments in the housing sector. As big technology stocks tumbled, traders jumped into real estate-connected holdings on a hunch that the sector would benefit from a lower-rate environment. Exactly 55% of analysts rate the stock a buy, with an average price target showing shares can rise close to 15%. About 2 out of every 3 analysts rate the stock a buy, and the average price target implies shares can climb almost 20%. The average price target reflects further upside of more than 16% over the next year.

The weekly chart of the iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF (ITB) shows how the long-term trend has become quite strong off the October 2022 low. The higher low in October was a sign of accumulation, showing that the bearish momentum going into the summer had begun to dissipate. Once this ETF broke above its July 2023 high, it traded higher to a price gap in December of last year. In this case, the homebuilder ETF resolved this pattern to the upside in late February with a break above $105. From the October 2023 low to the end of last year, the ITB soared higher, gaining over 40% in value in just two months. Interest rates moving lower certainly helped this upside momentum, with the 10-year Treasury yield dropping from 5.0% to 3.8% during this period. This is where price is moving higher, but the RSI is sloping down. After the data, the S&P 500 spent the morning zig-zagging between red and green. U.S. benchmark 10-year yields rose after the inflation data and rose further to hit a session high after the auction. The rise in yields particularly pressured rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities (.SPLRCU) and real estate (.SPLRCR), often viewed as bond proxies. Homebuilding stocks fell after the data and came under more pressure after the afternoon increase in bond yields. Traders now expect a stronger chance the Fed will end up delivering another interest-rate hike this year, and keep rates higher for longer next year.

This historic weakness is well-enshrined in stock market lore and encapsulated in the old chestnut, "Sell Rosh Hashana and buy Yom Kippur." Triple witching refers to each quarter's simultaneous expiration of stock index futures and options and individual stock options. It may be true we are in a bull market, but it is certainly not a typical one. Instead of trying to pick winners, Marks sensibly proposes the opposite: You might also achieve that goal — of producing alpha, or outperformance — by holding fewer of the losers. That is why the vast majority of active stock pickers continue to underperform the market, and why money continues to flow into passive index funds.

U.S. stock futures were near flat on Tuesday evening as investors took a breather from last week's market rally. S&P 500 futures inched down by 0.06% and Nasdaq 100 futures lost 0.03%. The S&P 500 slid 0.47%, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.16%. Stocks are overbought and in need of a catalyst, according to Quincy Krosby, chief global strategist for LPL Financial. Indeed, last week the S&P 500 hit its highest level since April 2022 and posted its fifth consecutive positive week.

Mortgage rates are tied indirectly to the Fed through the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, and could still move around while the central bank is paused. The ETFs that track the industry have already outperformed this year, rebounding from dramatic declines in 2022. The rapid Fed rate hikes last year appeared to spook consumers, who saw their future monthly payments climb sharply just while they were in the midst of searching for new homes. ITB YTD mountain Homebuilder ETFs like the ITB have outperformed in 2023. And a relatively stable interest rate outlook should make it easier for the homebuilders to hit those raised estimates, according to their own executives.
Chartmaster David Keller shared the three biggest risks facing the market right now. The S&P 500 may struggle to break past technical resistance of 4,200 and 4,300. He predicted that if the VIX rises to 20, the S&P 500 would fall to a vital support level of 3,800. The percentage of S&P 500 stocks trading above their 50-day moving average (in green) has fallen below 50% recently. David Keller, StockCharts.comPoor market breadth should be a serious concern for investors, Keller said.
The iShares U.S. Home Construction ETF climbed Tuesday with shares of the country's largest home builders rising. Home construction fell 0.8% to a 1.42 million annualized rate, with a decline in construction starts of multifamily units. Despite the weakness in housing data, Bespoke outpointed that housing stocks have been rallying, pushing the ITB ETF close to 52-week highs. The ETF and housing starts data have tended to track each other over the past ten years. "They usually say the market looks six months forward, but in the case of housing stocks and housing data, recently it's been more like five," it said.
That could mark a significant change in the international travel market, to which Chinese tourists are outsized contributors. In the first half of that year alone, their outbound travel spend surpassed $127.5 billion, a study from Chinese travel booking site Ctrip.com found. Chinese outbound travel is forecast to recover around two-thirds of its pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Leopatrizi | E+ | Getty ImagesBecause of those shortcomings, countries that can accommodate Chinese travelers' shifting needs have emerged as clear winners. Thailand, for instance, offers visas-on-arrival to fully vaccinated Chinese tourists who have travel insurance.
Inflation and higher living costs may be weighing on consumers' wallets, but there's one area where many are unwilling to cut back: their desire to travel. The number of people willing to fork out more on travel could be even higher, as costs rise. Jackyenjoyphotography | Moment | Getty ImagesThe disconnect could mean travel companies might fail to provide consumers with the deals they're looking for. The United Nations World Tourism Organization said that it expects the global tourism market to recover 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels this year.
Robert Habeck, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, and Irakli Garibashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, shared their views on Georgia's EU membership bid. BERLIN — German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck backed the European Union membership bid of Russia's Caucasus neighbor, Georgia, saying that the country was "very much welcome" in the bloc. Georgia, a former Soviet state situated to Russia's south-west border, applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, one week after Russia's full-blown invasion of Ukraine. Georgia is one of a number of countries in the region that have hastened their EU membership bids in the wake of Russia's invasion. Ukraine and neighboring Moldova applied for EU membership in February and March 2022, respectively, and were granted candidate status in June.
The aviation industry, battered by years of pandemic curbs, has also been critical of the decisions to impose testing on travellers from China. China reported five new COVID deaths in the mainland for Thursday, bringing its official virus death toll to 5,264, one of the lowest in the world. Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways (0293.HK) said on Thursday it would more than double flights to mainland China. Except for airplane wastewater testing by Malaysia and Thailand for the virus, the region's 11 nations will treat Chinese travellers like any others. As many as 76% of Chinese travel agencies ranked Southeast Asia as the top destination when outbound travel resumed, according to a survey released in December by trade show ITB China.

Neighbouring Malaysia projects 1.5 million to 2 million Chinese tourists this year versus 3 million before the pandemic. The bond market splashes some cold water on the stock market's attempt at upside follow-through to Monday's strong but familiar one-day pop. It happened just as the S & P 500 revisited the "island" left by its early-October rally. The October high of 3,806 remains an initial mile-marker with tests all the way up to the 200-day average around 4,150. This is a precondition for a serious rally that challenges the entrenched downtrend, but not in itself enough to make one happen. It's good to have a high wall of worry for stocks to climb, barring serious market instability.
He said the S&P 500 would climb back to 4,400 by early next year. He said he thinks the S&P 500 will rally back to 4,400, which is about 19% upside from where it closed on Friday. StifelProvided that inflation continues to meaningfully drop, so too will yields on 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, Bannister said. When 10-year TIPS yields and 36-month fed funds futures fall, the S&P 500 tend to rise. Longer-term, the S&P 500 is likely to remain range-bound below 4,800 through the rest of the decade, he said.
