A scorching streak in Phoenix has set new daily records for 10 straight days during an October heat wave sweeping much of the West. The forecast calls for this streak of broken records to potentially reach up to 16 days in a row. The current record at a U.S. climate station for the number of consecutive daily record highs is 14 from Burlington, Iowa, recorded during the Dust Bowl in 1936. Dozens more October monthly record highs were set Thursday in states such as Kansas and Nebraska. The National Hurricane Center also continues to watch Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Storm Leslie in the open Atlantic, though neither pose any threat to land.

Special prosecutor Brian Wice confirmed the case was settled in a phone call with CNN on Tuesday. A grand jury indicted Paxton on two counts of securities fraud and one count of failing to register with state securities regulators in July 2015, months after he was sworn in as attorney general. Wice told reporters after the hearing that the terms of the settlement amounted to a just conclusion to the case. He was impeached and suspended from office on allegations of corruption last May in the Republican-controlled Texas House, though a September trial in the Texas Senate acquitted him. Paxton was one of the highest-profile and last-remaining defenders of Trump’s baseless claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election.

On Monday, Trump's attorney Alina Habba said he intends to take the witness stand in his defense. Trump's two driving impulses — to fight the system and to take the witness stand — will create the judicial equivalent of a car wreck, experts told Business Insider. Alternatively, Trump can get on the witness stand and "try to testify in a narrative fashion," Jones said. Carroll's trial does have a jury, making it harder to "unring that bell" of forbidden testimony, Jones said. Or wager that he'll inflict wounds on himself by taking the witness stand?

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

It is a feat former President Donald Trump is trying to duplicate this year. The first true test of Trump’s comeback occurs Monday in Iowa, where caucusgoers will venture into sub-zero temperatures to choose between Trump, Florida Gov. After months of speculation, we’ll finally get some answers to a few questions: Is there an opening for any Republican aside from Trump? Most of our contributors thought Haley won Wednesday’s CNN debate in Iowa against DeSantis, but Trump’s absence from the stage again loomed large. “Haley sounded like someone looking to take on the genuine article — the Republican frontrunner,” wrote W. TEL AVIV (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Israel on Friday that it risks destroying an eventual possibility for peace unless it acts swiftly to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza for Palestinian civilians as it intensifies its war against Hamas. At the same time, he said he was also shaken by images of dead and wounded Palestinian children in Gaza. Blinken also said it was imperative for Israel, regional countries, the U.S. and others to begin considering what the future of Gaza will look like if and when Hamas is destroyed. He said the idea of Hamas remaining responsible for the governance Gaza, thereby posing a continued threat to Israel, was “unacceptable." “Within those parameters we will continue to have discussions in the region and our partners about what should follow once Hamas is defeated," Blinken said.

Over the past few days, Jordan tried to pressure fellow Republicans into voting for him. He mounted an intense campaign over the weekend to whip up the vote and undermine support for Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise. Arkansas Republican Steve Womack decried the “attack, attack, attack” methods that Jordan has been using. Within the GOP, Jordan has not been a figure who is well loved. At a potential turning point moment for the party, Jordan doesn’t have many chits he can call in to round up the votes.

REUTERS/Jose Cabezas Acquire Licensing RightsGENEVA, Oct 6 (Reuters) - UNICEF on Friday said floods, storms, and other weather-related disasters have driven millions of children from their homes, with the situation set to deteriorate if action is not taken. UNICEF recorded the most weather-related child displacements in the East Asia and Pacific region due to the combination of hazards there, followed by South Asia. Extreme weather events have become more common in recent years due to climate change. Floods and storms accounted for 95% of the child displacements, said UNICEF, during the six-year period, according to its report, "Children Displaced in a Changing Climate". The report projects that nearly 96 million children will be displaced due to river floods alone over the next three decades, an average of almost 3.2 million children every year.

Throughout, the great white is characterized as a dogged predator obsessed with human flesh. Romp in the rain as American Harman wins Open

It's just always bugged me but I was really proud of the way that I struck the ball today. Few of the thousands huddled under a sea of umbrellas would have tipped world number 26 Harman to win before the tournament. Likewise, Young, Rahm, Day and England's Tommy Fleetwood were all unable to hole the putts that would have at least asked some questions of Harman's nerve. But not even a Merseyside monsoon could rain on Harman's parade as he enjoyed a victory march down the last. CNN —A graphic video emerged on social media Wednesday from Manipur amidst ongoing ethnic violence in the northeastern Indian state. The video, which is going viral on social media, depicts an incident from May 4, according to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) showing two women being forced to walk naked through a crowd of fully clothed men. The distressing video, that has been seen by CNN, shows the terrified victims surrounded by a mob of men, many brandishing long canes or sticks as weapons. Among other things, tribal status would enable the Meitei to buy land and provide more opportunities for government jobs. “After taking a Suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump has responded to his federal indictment the way he has responded to various other crises – with a blizzard of dishonesty. Here is a fact check of 10 of the indictment-related claims Trump has made since the 37 federal charges against him were unsealed on Friday. Trump and the Presidential Records ActTrump claimed in North Carolina that he had abided by the Presidential Records Act: “And we had a great – we had a wonderful operation, everything by the Presidential Records Act.”Facts First: This is false. The Presidential Records Act says that all presidential records belong to the federal government the moment the president leaves office. Margaret Kwoka, a law professor at The Ohio State University and an expert on information law, said in a Friday email that “any comparison between congressional records and presidential records is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

I'm so confident in this assertion that I don't think you should keep your ambivalence about going to college a "big secret."
The result was not just autocratic rule at home but also periodic defaults on the royal debt, astronomical interest rates for government borrowing and ultimately civil war. The debt limit is nothing more than an authorization from Congress to borrow a certain amount, up to a certain limit. Nonetheless, President Biden’s advisers reportedly are contemplating violating the congressional debt limit based on a far-fetched interpretation of Section 4 of the 14th Amendment propounded by some academics. It does not make it unconstitutional for the United States to run out of money. For the United States to fail to pay interest or principal on its debt would be financially catastrophic, but it would not affect the “validity” of the debt.
After a close 2022 result, Democrats are hoping to knock off GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert next year. Last year, Boebert won her Republican-leaning Colorado district over Adam Frisch by only 546 votes. And as the incumbent in the state's conservative-leaning 3rd Congressional District, it appeared to many as though Boebert would be relatively safe in her reelection bid in last year's midterms. "I think it started the people in the third congressional district thinking that she wasn't paying enough attention to the district as she was paying more attention to national politics." "Extreme House Democrats lost the majority because they hammered families with crime, chaos and skyrocketing costs," National Republican Congressional Committee communications director Jack Pandol said in a statement.
As Silicon Valley Bank went down the tubes, it wasn't surprising that the loudest mouths in Techworld started demanding that the federal government cover everyone's losses. They were pioneers on the frontier of tech and finance, and as such they acted the way pioneers always do. Myths of the frontiersIt's unfashionable for people in the tech industry to dispute the central role that government-funded infrastructure and academic projects have played in the development of Silicon Valley and the digital age. Shout down into Silicon Valley and you'll hear echoes of this same pioneer myth. They see themselves as heroes not of a Western frontier but of space — the Final one — as refracted by the legendary writers of the Golden Age of Science Fiction.
