CNN —Taylor Swift released “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, a 31-track surprise double album, and she’s clearly in an emotionally evolved era. Either way, as the title suggests in this song, she’s determined to get him back. ‘I Hate it Here’“This place made me feel worthless,” Swift sings. Others have connected the Cassandra that Swift sings about to the figure in Greek mythology, a priestess whose accurate prophecies were not believed. ‘The Bolter’“As she was leaving it felt like breathing,” Swift sings.

But there’s also the loud minority of “Never Trump” Republicans, represented by figures like former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger or former New Jersey Gov. In North Carolina, exit polls suggest Trump won a slim majority of Republican voters with a college degree. But there’s a third camp: the reluctant Republican stalwarts who are neither Always Trump nor Never Trump. In general, these Republicans tend to seek traditionally defined conservative policy victories – from school choice to tax cuts to a strong national defense. But they can also see the potential for conservative policy victories in a second Trump administration.

The United States plans to deport the Mexican man who was acquitted of killing Kathryn Steinle, a woman whose 2015 death while strolling along a San Francisco pier fueled a fierce national debate over immigration, officials said Thursday. Donald J. Trump, then a presidential candidate, highlighted the case in his attacks on migration and sanctuary cities. Jose Inez Garcia Zarate was acquitted by a jury in November 2017 on murder and manslaughter charges but was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. ICE plans to deport Mr. Garcia Zarate to central or southern Mexico within days or a week, according to an official with the Department of Homeland Security. Officials have released the names of two workers trapped when a coal mine preparation plant collapsed earlier this week in eastern Kentucky. Martin County Judge Executive Lon Lafferty identified the men as Billy Ray Daniels and Alvin Nees, news outlets report. Daniels died amid rescue efforts at the scene and Nees is believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Officials briefly made contact with Daniels, but announced Wednesday he died amid rescue efforts. In the second full day of rescue efforts, officials are removing the debris into smaller piles for the search, Lafferty said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Abortion access is expected to play a central role in the 2024 elections. The preview comes next week, when Ohio voters decide whether to enshrine reproductive rights in their state Constitution. They question whether state lawmakers could pass any abortion restrictions at all that would pass constitutional muster if voters approve the amendment. AP VoteCast polling last year found that 59% of Ohio voters say abortion should generally be legal. “Ohio voters really know what's at stake here, because they've seen the incredible lengths that the Ohio government will go to to interfere in people's lives,” McGuire said.

Crews began the arduous process of removing layers of rubble and debris in the search for a missing worker Thursday at a collapsed coal mine preparation plant in eastern Kentucky where a second worker died. Officials briefly made contact with one of the two men working inside, but announced Wednesday he died amid rescue efforts. Authorities said Thursday they have not had any communication with the second worker since the building collapsed at around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Inez, a town of about 500 people. In the second full day of rescue efforts, officials are removing the debris into smaller piles for the search. Slinker estimated that up to 50 rescue workers and 25 support personnel at a time were involved in the search.

INEZ, Ky. (AP) — Crews were working Wednesday to rescue two men trapped after the collapse of a more than 10-story Kentucky coal preparation plant being readied for demolition, officials said. The collapse was reported around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Martin County Sheriff John Kirk said first responders were able to find and make contact with one of the two men, news outlets reported. Andy Beshear said he had declared a state of emergency in the county — mobilizing state resources to help with the rescue. The plant hasn’t been in use for several years and the men were salvaging material from the building when it collapsed, Kirk said. The men were on the bottom floor of the building when it collapsed, trapping them beneath tons of rubble, Kirk said.

More Republicans are coming to the view that economic inequality, or a lack of social mobility, is a problem in the United States — and that more can be done to enable families to attain or regain a middle-class life. Though discussions about inequality tend to be most visible among liberals, about four in 10 Republican or Republican-leaning adults think there is too much economic inequality in the country, according to a Pew Research survey. And among Republicans making less than about $40,000 a year who see too much economic inequality, 63 percent agree that the economic system “requires major changes” to address it. “I don’t think just having a bigger government is a solution to a lot of these problems,” said Inez Stepman, a senior policy analyst at the Independent Women’s Forum and a fellow with the Claremont Institute, a conservative think tank widely credited with giving Trumpism an intellectual framework. “But I do think that we could stand to think a little bit more on the right about how to make that 1950s middle-class life possible for people.”

Why did you decide to confront the foster care system? LEAF When researching the foster-care system, you realize how broken it is on every level. I’m talking about children in the foster-care system who grow up and have their own children. I think what drew me to the foster-care system was seeing how people who spent their childhoods in foster care were impacted as adults when the system failed them. All those things are what people in foster care want more than anything.

Yusef Salaam, one of five Black and Latino men whose convictions were overturned in the 1989 rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park, cemented his victory in a highly contested City Council primary race in Harlem, according to The Associated Press on Wednesday. Mr. Salaam, 49, held a commanding lead on Election Day, with more than twice the number of votes over his closest rival, Inez Dickens, a state assemblywoman. The New York City Board of Elections began tabulating ranked-choice votes on Wednesday, and the new ranked-choice tabulation now shows Mr. Salaam with almost 64 percent of the vote to Ms. Dickens’s 36 percent. “This is a victory for justice, dignity and decency for the Harlem community we love,” Mr. Salaam said in a statement. Mr. Salaam is not expected to face a serious challenger, if any, in November.

Walking down 125th Street the day after taking a commanding lead in the race for a City Council seat in Central Harlem, Yusef Salaam couldn’t make it half a block without someone congratulating him on his likely victory. Voter after voter who greeted Mr. Salaam on Wednesday said they recognized him as one of the five Black and Latino men exonerated in 2002 in the rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park in 1989. “I think this election is largely about change,” Mr. Salaam, 49, said. The other candidate in the race was Al Taylor, 65, also an assemblyman serving his sixth year in the State Legislature. In both Harlem and East New York, voters went from supporting self-described socialists to backing moderate Democrats.

New York City Council Ninth DistrictThe Ninth Council District’s Democratic primary in Harlem pits two State Assembly members, Inez Dickens and Al Taylor, against Yusef Salaam, one of five men who were convicted and then exonerated in a 1989 rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park. The name of Councilwoman Kristin Richardson Jordan, the incumbent, remains on the ballot despite dropping out of the race last month.

Two years ago, when a democratic socialist narrowly won a crowded Democratic primary for a City Council seat in Harlem, some saw it as a sign that the historically Black neighborhood was becoming more politically progressive. But roughly a month before this year’s primary on June 27, the first-term councilwoman, Kristin Richardson Jordan, unexpectedly dropped out of the race. Her decision has recast the hotly contested Democratic primary, which now comprises three candidates — none particularly progressive. Two are sitting State Assembly members: Al Taylor, 65, a reverend in his sixth year in the Legislature; and Inez Dickens, 73, who held the Harlem Council seat for 12 years before joining the Assembly. All are moderate Democrats who, before Ms. Jordan’s withdrawal, had tried to distance themselves from Ms. Jordan and her political stances, which include redistributing wealth and abolishing the police.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams appointed a "rat czar" to help eliminate rodents in the city. One Boston city official says the Massachusetts city should follow suit and hire a rat slayer of their own. Days later, Boston City Council President Ed Flynn recommended the Massachusetts city hire someone in a similar position ""to hopefully one day eliminate rats in Boston," the Boston Herald reported. In 2022, Chicago was named the number one "rattiest" city in the US over both New York City and Boston. "You can hear them screaming — ee, ee, ee, ee!"
It turns out that he has fallen out a window and been hospitalized. Inez, sensing an opportunity, simply takes the boy home with her and hopes to disappear with him in the vast city. It’s unclear to me how someone might get away with snatching a kid from a hospital, but it’s a reasonably compelling premise for a movie. “A Thousand and One,” however, does very little with it. It’s a cousin to other superficially gritty but essentially cloying movies about the traumas of urban striving, such as “Precious” or “Moonlight.”
CNN —Ryan Reynolds was being celebrated Tuesday night at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, but he made the moment about his family. “I’d be pretty remiss if I didn’t mention that it starts with my family and it ends with my family,” he said in his acceptance speech. “Boy, if he could see all the things going on, he wouldn’t be impressed with this stuff,” Reynolds said of his dad. While Reynolds joked about how tiring being a parent of young children can be, he was more serious about how much his family means to him. I joke that my family exhausts me, but in reality you give me more strength than any man could possibly deserve.”
Nov 2 (Reuters) - A Florida judge was due to formally sentence Nikolas Cruz, the man who killed 17 students and staff with a semi-automatic rifle at a school in Parkland, to life in prison on Wednesday. A jury voted last month to spare Cruz, 24, the death penalty, instead choosing life in prison without possibility of parole for one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. Cruz pleaded guilty last year to premeditated murder, then faced the three-month penalty trial earlier this year. A number of victims' relatives castigated the jury's decision and criticized a state law requirement that all 12 jurors be unanimous in order to sentence a convicted person to be executed. Many victims' relatives directly addressed Cruz, who sat inscrutable behind large spectacles and a COVID-19 mask at a table alongside his public defenders.
