A pink card will be used for concussion substitutions at this summer’s Copa America. AdvertisementCONMEBOL has said teams must report to the referee or fourth official when they believe a player has suffered a “suspected cranioencephalic trauma and concussion”, with a pink card then being shown to indicate the replacement will not use an allocated slot in a clear protocol for concussion substitutions. A maximum of one pink card per team will be issued per game, and the opposition team will “have the option to use an additional substitute and an additional substitution opportunity”. How to follow the Copa America on The Athletic…In March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved permanent concussion substitutions following successful trial periods in divisions including England’s Premier League. GO DEEPER Permanent concussion subs introduced into football's lawsWhile concussion substitutions will become part of the laws of the game from July 1, 2024, a trial for temporary concussion substitutions — a measure which has been called for by the Premier League as well as players’ unions — was not approved by the IFAB.

Premier League clubs are set to hold a vote at their annual general meeting next month on a proposal to abolish the video assistant referee (VAR) system from the start of next season. A Wolves statement said the move came “after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, (referees body) PGMOL and our fellow competitors. “However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future. CNN —Soccer is set to trial sin bins at the higher levels of the game in a bid to improve player behavior towards match officials – a move that has drawn a mixed response. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport’s lawmaking body, announced on Monday that sin bins should be trialed “for dissent and specific tactical offences” having been successfully implemented at a grassroots level. Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesBut not everyone is in favor of sin bins. “Considering football can’t decide what is clear and obvious from one week to the next, sin bins and the threshold for being banished to one have no chance,” CNN Senior Sports Analyst Darren Lewis wrote on X. He continued: “The success of sin bins in the grassroots game has been prevention, rather than cure.

CNN —Newcastle United was denied a famous away win over Paris Saint-Germain after the French side was awarded a late penalty following yet another controversial VAR decision. Trailing 1-0 to Alexander Isak’s 24th-minute goal, PSG swarmed the Newcastle goal throughout the second half but without any success. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the penalty after being recommended by the VAR to view the pitchside monitor. If he’s the best ref in the business – and he probably is – how can he give that?”How on earth is that a penalty for PSG. After the match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he was “still coming to terms” with the decision to award PSG a spot kick.

Reviewing refereeing decisions has come a long – and increasingly unloved – way from the VAR (video assistant referee) project first trialed by FIFA in 2016. Two days earlier, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta lashed out at “an absolute disgrace” to allow Newcastle a decisive goal after a triple-layered VAR review. “Significant human error,” the league officials' group acknowledged after Tottenham's 2-1 win that is still title-chasing Liverpool's only loss in the league. Former Australia coach Postecoglou said he is traditional and prefers soccer without VAR, where all accept occasional mistakes and respect the referee. “You can’t tell me referees are in control of games,” Postecoglou said Monday.

Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesAt the heart of this is a failure in communication by match officials and a failure to put pragmatism before protocol. There is an acceptance that mistakes will happen, and there have been plenty already this season in the Premier League. The release of the audio of the conversations between the match officials would likely influence what Liverpool does next. In rugby union, fans can listen to discussions between match officials on crucial decisions, making the process clear and open for all. The immediate consequence has been that VAR officials England and Cook have not been selected to feature in this weekend’s Premier League games.

IFAB agrees extension of VAR broadcast trial

LONDON, March 4 (Reuters) - A trial to broadcast the VAR decisions to fans inside stadiums and television audiences was confirmed by soccer's law-making body the International Football Association Board (IFAB) at its annual meeting in London on Saturday. The trial was introduced at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco last year and will continue at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in May to June 2023. VAR decisions often take several minutes to be decided, leaving players and fans in limbo and unsure of exactly what methodology is being applied by officials. A decision will then be made as to whether the trial will be continued at other FIFA tournaments later this year. It was also agreed that a more accurate calculation for 'additional time' at the end of matches -- a notable feature of last year's World Cup in Qatar, should be followed in competitions around the world.
CNN —Japan reached the World Cup knockout stages for the fourth time on Thursday – by what appeared to be a matter of millimeters. But it’s Japan’s second goal that has been a topic of fierce debate in the aftermath of the game, specifically regarding whether the ball crossed the goal line before Kaoru Mitoma’s cutback pass to Ao Tanaka. Football or soccer? It’s complicated …

Football, or soccer, has been around for centuries with its roots dating back over 2,000 years ago, but it was not until 1863 that England’s Football Association (the FA) cemented the sport’s full name of Association Football when they established the game’s first rules. Courtesy of U.S. Soccer and National Soccer Hall of FameBy the time association football and its round ball made its way across the Atlantic, American Football was already the popular game claiming the name of football. Unlike association football, American football is a game played mostly with one’s hands and uses an oval ball. Fast forward to 1974 and the United States Soccer Football Association (USSFA) – the sport’s governing body in the US – distanced itself from the word football by changing its name to the United States Soccer Federation, commonly referred to as the USSF (US Soccer). In places where football can be ambiguous, soccer is usefully precise.”In 1994, soccer fever reached a highpoint as the US hosted the World Cup.
CNN —The men’s Danish soccer team has been forbidden from wearing training shirts showing human rights messaging at this month’s World Cup in Qatar. The Danish Football Federation’s (DBU) CEO, Jakob Jensen, revealed the ban in an interview with Danish publication DR Sporten, released on Thursday. “We are of the opinion that the message Human Rights for All is universal and is not a political call, but it should be something that all people can support.”FIFA abides by the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Laws of the Game and declined to comment on the matter when CNN reached out. Tournament organizers at the time disputed Hummel’s claims and said they have engaged in “robust and transparent dialogue” with the DBU. The 2022 World Cup runs from November 20 through to December 18.
