TikTok has officially launched its e-commerce service TikTok Shop in the US. The platform introduced TikTok Shop in the U.S. in September as an in-app shopping experience, capitalizing on the #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt trend. Though TikTok Shop previously faced backlash and was forced to shut down in Indonesia, consumers are increasingly trending toward buying off of social media. And 86% of Gen Z shoppers say social media influences their shopping habits, according to an ICSC report. One of those TikTok Shop enthusiasts is 29-year-old Chuck Vaughn, who called the TikTok Shop phenomenon "a gold rush."

Americans between the ages of 18 and 29, a majority of which are Gen Z, have already gotten a jump on their holiday shopping, according to a recent Shopify-Gallup Survey. And almost half, 48%, say they will do at least some of their year-end buying on social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram. For brands attempting to capture the Gen Z customer, a compelling social media presence is key. About 86% of Gen Z shoppers say social media sways their buying decisions, according to a report by ICSC. For Gen Z, a product is cool because the right person — usually one who came across their TikTok feed — has it.

Much of TikTok's success ecommerce success has come from livestream shopping, which is an enormous market in countries like Indonesia. Consumers spent a record $9.12 billion online shopping during Black Friday and another record $11.3 billion on Cyber Monday, according to the most recent data from Adobe. So far this November, consumers have spent $107.7 billion online overall, up nearly 10% from last year. Yet roughly 60% of Americans were living paycheck to paycheck heading into the month. While buy now, pay later often promises zero interest, studies have also shown that installment buying could encourage consumers to spend more than they can afford. However, experts say it's not too late to avoid the same financial pitfalls this season.
