It has offered adherents myriad “exclusive” opportunities to join clubs to give counsel to Mr. Trump, and it has repeatedly claimed that Mr. Trump is personally reviewing lists of small donors. The New York Times looked at some 7,400 emails sent by the Trump campaign since Mr. Trump entered the presidential race. Ms. Harris, and before her Mr. Biden, have far outpaced Mr. Trump in fund-raising this cycle, including from small-dollar donors. But both in sheer number (about 75 emails per week, on average, throughout this campaign cycle) and in syntax, the former president’s campaign emails stand out. Similar questions have arisen about contests Mr. Trump’s campaign and political action committee have run in years past.

That included talks for Son to provide up to $1 billion in funding to Altman and Jony Ive, the designer behind the iPhone, to create an A.I.-powered replacement for the smartphone. Bloomberg reported that SoftBank had hoped to be part of OpenAI’s last fund-raising round, but was instead wait-listed. Son is also trying to organize the auto industry around the use of A.I. Paralympics Will Drop Ban on Olympic Rings Tattoos
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Scott Cacciola | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
For years, Paralympians with tattoos of the Olympic rings were playing a dangerous game: They had to cover the tattoos completely in competition, or face penalties from the International Paralympic Committee, which included disqualification. But ahead of the 2024 Paralympics, which start next week in Paris, the I.P.C. “Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up,” Craig Spence, the chief brand and communications officer for the I.P.C., said in an email on Friday. Mr. Spence declined to offer an explanation for the change in policy. For Paralympians like Rudy Garcia-Tolson, however, the change is a welcome one, regardless of how the I.P.C.

vehicles, their hoods adorned with Bangladesh’s national flag according to state protocol, idled late one recent evening in a ground-floor parking lot at the University of Dhaka. Just a week before, they were hounded leaders of a youth-driven popular uprising against the country’s seemingly unbreakable prime minister. Now, after her astonishing ouster, the two are cabinet ministers in the country’s interim government. Inside the parking lot, young women and men milled around these unlikeliest of government officials, asking questions and posing for selfies. On a pillar at the entrance, spray-painted graffiti declared the moment: “Revolution is not a dinner party.”Outside, the streets of this country of 170 million people are run by students.

There is a major opportunity for Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats in the House and Senate to set our country on a different course. At a time when massive technological shifts are happening around the world, what the former Google C.E.O. She was California’s attorney general during the smartphone boom of the 2010s, when tax revenues from tech company I.P.O.s and stock market gains turned California’s budget deficits into surpluses and reinforced the state’s standing as the world’s innovation leader. Ackman Scales Back Multibillion-Dollar I.P.O.
  + stars: | 2024-07-30 | by ( Maureen Farrell | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The billionaire investor William Ackman appears to have scaled back his ambitions for an initial public offering in New York — at least in terms of its size. The investment vehicle that Mr. Ackman plans to take public on the New York Stock Exchange next week — Pershing Square USA — is aiming to raise $2 billion in the share sale, according to a regulatory filing on Tuesday. That’s a far cry from the $10 billion or more that Mr. Ackman discussed as a target earlier this year. In investor meetings in recent months, he had floated an even larger number: $25 billion. The $2 billion figure is a place holder, and Pershing Square USA could raise more as investors put in orders through Monday night, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details were private.

Ackman delays his big betMonday isn’t going to be the day that Bill Ackman prices the I.P.O. of his Pershing Square USA investment vehicle, as had been planned. But the long-awaited fund, whose investors will probably include many who follow Ackman’s provocations on social media, is still coming, it says. The context: Pershing Square USA is a so-called closed-end fund that’s raising money to make the sort of concentrated investments that Ackman is now known for. The fund had faced big expectations after Ackman set an initial I.P.O.

No one has ever said that Donald Trump doesn’t know a good story when he hears one. Trump is a master of narrative. Not always true narrative, and not always rational narrative. (Barron, who was very upset by what happened to his father, according to Trump aides, was nowhere to be seen.) “I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” Trump told the crowd at Fiserv Forum, after walking out on a stage with a campy giant “TRUMP” in blazing white lights and a display of the White House portico.

The venue is a glittering 18th-century palace and the birthplace of Winston Churchill. The guests include more than 40 of Europe’s leaders. And, King Charles III will be on hand to host a V.I.P. Yet despite the serene grandeur of the surroundings at Blenheim Palace, near Oxford, the continent’s top politicians will meet on Thursday in a mood of heightened anxiety and with a growing urgency to find common cause in an unsettled world. The meeting is the fourth of the European Political Community, the brainchild of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, in 2022, who wanted countries across the continent to work together to confront collective challenges.

Where Have All the Chinese I.P.O.s Gone?
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Meaghan Tobin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There was a time when a Chinese internet company’s initial public offering was the hottest thing on Wall Street. Scores of other Chinese companies raised billions in the United States over the next few years. Wall Street has not seen anything close to a blockbuster Chinese I.P.O. So far this year, Chinese companies have raised about $580 million in U.S. listings, almost all of it last month from one I.P.O. As the geopolitical relationship between China and the United States has deteriorated, it has become increasingly difficult for Chinese companies to find a foreign market where a listing might not be jeopardized by political scrutiny.

Our host, Jennifer Harris, gave a speech about how economic ideas change to meet the needs of a new era. In a room full of V.I.P.s, she was the Queen Bee. I was thrilled when the Biden administration came in with a plan for big federal investments in the American industrial base, tariffs, support for labor unions and actions against monopolies. To understand who Ms. Harris is, you have to know who she used to be. For years, she felt like an oddball in Washington, where both parties were still in thrall to neoliberalism.

Betting on AckmanBill Ackman has gained new prominence in recent months for his outspoken presence on social media. But he has also made riches for his investors and himself — and now others are hoping he’ll continue to do so. His Pershing Square Capital Management has sold a 10 percent stake for just over $1 billion to an array of outside investors, giving the hedge fund a lofty valuation. The question is whether Ackman’s newfound fans on social media will follow him as he grows his empire, including through a new listed fund and, eventually, an I.P.O. That has bolstered Ackman’s paper worth to $8 billion, Bloomberg calculates, making him 333rd among the world’s wealthiest people.

Shein, the online retail giant founded in China, had grand ambitions to go public in New York. The company is now focusing more on the London Stock Exchange for its initial public offering, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. That may not have been the company’s initial choice — but it would be a big win for Britain, which has been wary of its capital city losing its status as a global financial hub. A spokeswoman for Shein declined to comment; the British Treasury also declined to comment. like Shein’s could be seen as a prize that bolsters the local financial market and sets the stage for other companies to follow.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2018 report on global warming drastically changed the way many people thought — or felt — about the climate crisis. That report laid out, with grim clarity, both the importance and extreme difficulty of preventing global warming from reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. Its warnings about what was likely to happen to our planet if we didn’t turn things around were severe. The starkness of the I.P.C.C.’s report led to a surge of pessimism, fear and, in response to those emotions, climate activism that hasn’t really abated. But recently there has been a growing counterresponse to those darker feelings, including from some experts who have a clear view on what’s coming — and that response is a cautious optimism.

On a Monday morning last month, tech executives, engineers and sales representatives from Amazon, Google, TikTok and other companies endured a three-hour traffic jam as their cars crawled toward a mammoth conference at an event space in the desert, 50 miles outside Riyadh. The lure: billions of dollars in Saudi money as the kingdom seeks to build a tech industry to complement its oil dominance. To bypass the congestion, frustrated eventgoers drove onto the highway shoulder, kicking up plumes of desert sand as they sped past those following traffic rules. A lucky few took advantage of a special freeway exit dedicated to “V.V.I.P.s” — very, very important people.

Rough seas were a fitting symbol for this week’s meeting of Group of 7 foreign ministers on the Italian island of Capri. Coast Guard ships that ferried V.I.P.s across the Gulf of Naples to the island on Wednesday swayed precariously, leaving the passengers reaching for their motion-sickness medicine — and, in some cases, their sick bags. Though no ministers from this elite international coalition, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, were known to have lost their lunch, the global problems they confronted were enough to make even a seasoned diplomat queasy: the risk of war between Iran and Israel, the nightmare in Gaza and Ukraine’s uncertain fate. At the luxurious Grand Hotel Quisisana, Mr. Blinken came determined to project unity within a group that includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union. First created to help stabilize the world economy, the G7 has grown more active and ambitious in recent years, seeking to shape geopolitics and to be “a steering committee for the world’s most advanced democracies,” as Mr. Blinken put it in a closing news conference on Friday.

The crisis in Gaza is entirely human-made, a result of Israel’s war on Hamas and a near-complete siege of the territory, aid experts say. For years before the latest war, Gaza was subject to an Israeli blockade, backed by Egypt. Image A child being treated for malnutrition at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza last week. Medical Debt has grown from a tiny nonprofit group that received less than $3,000 in donations to a multimillion-dollar force in health care philanthropy. Medical Debt estimates that it has eliminated more than $11 billion of debt with the help of major donations from philanthropists and even city governments. But a study published by a group of economists on Monday calls into question the premise of the high-profile charity. After following 213,000 people who were in debt and randomly selecting some to work with the nonprofit group, the researchers found that debt relief did not improve the mental health or the credit scores of debtors, on average. And those whose bills had been paid were just as likely to forgo medical care as those whose bills were left unpaid.

Last year, Meeson Pae, a Korean American multidisciplinary artist, walked through the Frieze Los Angeles art fair and thought, “One day, I hope to be here.”This year, she will be, in the booth presented by the gallerist Anat Ebgi at the fair, at the Santa Monica Airport, which opens to V.I.P.’s on Thursday and to the public on Friday. Pae is just one of the dozens of Asian artists, gallerists, curators and collectors in Los Angeles who over the last few years have been gaining recognition and attention from the city’s galleries, museums and the marketplace. The art world’s recent emphasis on equity and inclusion is moving beyond a focus on Black and Latino contributions to include Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, who have a long history in the city but until recently have tended to be left out of any discussion of the art market, and may have experienced discrimination — even racist incidents — during the Covid-19 pandemic. In Los Angeles, Asian Americans represent the third largest racial group, behind Latinos and whites. And California’s Asian American and Pacific Islander population grew by 25 percent over the past decade, faster than any other ethnic group in the state.
