Elon Musk’s daily $1 million lottery for registered swing state voters who sign his super PAC’s petition falls into a legal gray area and could potentially violate election law, three experts told NBC News. Paying someone to vote or to register to vote is explicitly illegal under federal law. “This is at best very questionable legally,” said Michael Morse, an assistant professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. But none of the experts who spoke with NBC News believed law enforcement is likely to stop the lottery or fine Musk before the election. “You can only register to vote in Pennsylvania until today.

Planning the local stops now can be as labor-intensive for campaign staff as putting on a full event, the sources said. The limitations on local stops is the new reality as both candidates race across battleground states in what polling has shown to be a contest that hangs within the margin of error. “In order to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not discuss the specific means and methods used to conduct its protective operations. A highly anticipated legislative hearing began Monday but without its key witness: a Texas inmate whose execution for his daughter's "shaken baby" death was narrowly averted last week. The high court, however, said Sunday it would not rule on the manner in which Roberson must testify. Roberson, 57, has maintained his innocence in the 2002 death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki, based on "shaken baby syndrome." But hours later, Roberson said, he woke up and realized Nikki was not breathing and her lips looked blue. Wharton, the lead detective in the case, has also voiced his support for Roberson, telling House committee members at a hearing last week: "This is an innocent man, beyond question."

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart kept cool in the face of pressure as she led the team to its first WNBA title with a thrilling 67-62 overtime win in the decisive fifth game of the WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. Stewart, who tallied 13 points in the game, drained a pair of free throws in the extra session to seal the victory and the title. She said she was determined to hit the shots, especially after she missed a potential game-winning free throw in Game 1, which the Lynx won in overtime. Stewart, a two-time WNBA MVP who was also twice named WNBA Finals MVP while leading the Seattle Storm to a pair of championships before joining the Liberty, said she tried to keep things simple in that moment. Japanese American leaders slammed former President Donald Trump after he compared Jan. 6 rioters to those of Japanese descent who were incarcerated during World War II just because of their race. “Nobody’s ever — maybe the Japanese during the Second World War, frankly. But you know, they were held too.”Several Japanese American leaders condemned Trump’s comments, with Ann Burroughs, president and CEO of the Japanese American National Museum, calling them an “egregiously inaccurate and flawed historical analogy.”“Now more than ever, the lessons from the Japanese American incarceration must never be forgotten, ignored, minimized, or erased,” she said in a statement on the museum’s website. One officer, who was sprayed with chemicals during the event, died a day later due to natural causes. Decades later, after a critical “Redress Movement,” Congress passed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 that provided monetary reparations and an apology to the Japanese American survivors.

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has forcefully ramped up his efforts to help re-elect former President Donald Trump, raising eyebrows across the political world and inviting questions about the legality of some of his tactics. Meanwhile, news reports have chronicled some of the issues facing America PAC, a political action committee funded by Musk to help boost Trump in the home stretch of the campaign. The two men rallied together earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president survived an assassination attempt over the summer. The giveaway plan was met with immediate pushback from some election law experts. Rick Hasen, a law professor at UCLA and an NBC News election law analyst, wrote in a post on his website Saturday that the payments were “clearly illegal.”“Essentially what you’re doing is you are creating a lottery.

The Vessel, the honeycomb-shaped tower in Manhattan which closed in 2021 after a series of suicides, reopened Monday with added safety features. The 150-foot attraction first opened in 2019 as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development on the West Side. It was a popular tourist destination, thanks to its zigzagging stairs and Hudson River views, but four suicides over 18 months forced its closure. The Vessel remained indefinitely closed to the public while owners worked to address the significant safety concerns highlighted by the deaths, NBC New York reported. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Ukraine on Monday, in a show of solidarity with Kyiv just two weeks ahead of a U.S. presidential election that is casting uncertainty over the future of Western support. “We’re going to continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to defend its sovereign territory,” Austin told reporters travelling with him to Ukraine. Trump has signaled he would be more reluctant than Biden to continue to support Ukraine, which could deprive Kyiv of its biggest military and financial backer. “I’ve seen bipartisan support for Ukraine over the last 2-1/2 years, and I fully expect that we’ll continue to see the bipartisan support from Congress,” he said. Stoianoglo has said that, if elected, he would build a “balanced” foreign policy involving ties with the EU, the United States, Russia and China. In the run-up to Sunday’s referendum, polls had shown clear majority support for joining the EU. A “yes” result means a clause will be added to the constitution defining EU accession as a goal. The EU leapt to Sandu’s defence, saying Moldova had faced “really unprecedented intimidation and foreign interference by Russia and its proxies ahead of this vote”. The tight referendum result could put Sandu in a weaker position going into the second round since she has championed EU integration.

Hundreds of One Direction fans gathered in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday to pay their respects to Liam Payne, the former member of the British-Irish boy band who died on Wednesday after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Despite rainy weather, the queue to get in front of the park’s Peter Pan statue — where fans young and old were placing flowers, heart-shaped balloons and letters in memory of Payne — stretched back as far as the eye could see. Minute-long moments of silence were held every hour on the dot, when the crowd got so quiet one could hear a pin drop. Jordi, 24, choked up telling Variety how One Direction helped her find a community during adolescence. “I was thinking about it on the train here, and I think my love for this band has been the only constant that I’ve had,” she said.
