The automakers said internal brake fluid leaks can cause an electrical short that could lead to a fire. Kia said the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in the vehicles may experience an electrical short as a result of brake fluid leaks. Hyundai said the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short. The September recall covered 1.73 million Kia Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Sportage, K900, Optima, Soul Rio, Sorento and Rondo vehicles from various model years for each vehicle from 2010 through 2017.

The N brand is the company's high-performance brand, akin to AMG for the Mercedes and the M lineup for the BMW. The IONIQ's N variant will be powered by dual motors producing 641 horsepower, nearly double the output of the most powerful variant of the standard outgoing model. Hyundai unveiled the performance EV in Los Angeles on Wednesday, ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show opening on Friday.

Hyundai has already laid out plans to invest $2.45 billion to beef up EV production in the country, and is bullish on the local appetite for EVS. "The country is becoming an increasingly important center for electric vehicle production and sales," Hyundai said. That could include Teslas, with the Elon Musk-run company (TSLA.O) planning to sell locally made EVs, starting at $24,000.

Rivals General Motors Co (GM.N) and Samsung SDI (006400.KS) said they would invest over $3 billion to build a joint venture EV battery manufacturing plant in the United States. NUSA DUA, Indonesia, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Indonesian metals company PT Adaro Minerals Indonesia, Tbk has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company on aluminium supply for automobile manufacturing, Adaro said in a statement on Sunday. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. Under the MoU, Hyundai would secure the right to purchase aluminium produced by Adaro's subsidiary PT Kalimantan Aluminum Industry at an early stage of production, the statement said. Adaro Minerals is a unit of Indonesia's second-largest coal miner Adaro Energy.
