North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to strip the state’s incoming Democratic governor and attorney general of key powers, passing a sweeping bill before the GOP likely loses their veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature next year. That power currently lies with the governor's office, which will remain in Democratic hands after Attorney General Josh Stein defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Republicans have long sought control of the state Board of Elections, which is historically controlled by the same party as the current governor, but their past efforts have been foiled by the courts. That means they would be unable to override any future vetos from Stein without Democratic support. Stein is succeeding outgoing Cooper, whose administration repeatedly clashed with the Republican-led Legislature in the battleground state.

New York CNN —The billionaires who control social media want to be clear about what’s OK to post online and what’s not. For X (formerly Twitter), just about anything goes, including neo-Nazi propaganda, crypto scams and porn (as long as it’s labeled properly). Anyone can do the same thing — Sweeney just made it slightly more convenient. It’s just not clear that Meta cares as much about its users’ privacy and wellbeing as it does about Zuckerberg’s. At a Senate hearing in January, Zuckerberg apologized to families who said their children had been harmed by social media.

The survey also finds dishonesty remaining a central theme of the election, with “lies” the most common word used in conjunction with Trump’s campaign. While both Harris and Trump have been holding rallies and speaking with podcasters, Harris has ramped up her media appearances. New York CNN —At any Tesla event, you have to go in expecting a good amount of smoke and mirrors. This is the company run by Elon Musk, after all — its self-anointed Technoking who’s made overpromising and underdelivering a theme of his career. ICYMI: The robotaxis, Tesla’s fully driverless vehicles that it hopes to put into service next year, were the main event. But Musk’s reality distortion field is something else entirely — hardly limited to overly optimistic timetables or pie-in-the-sky projections for Tesla’s delivery schedule. In a twist, though, X dropped Unilever from the lawsuit on Friday.

He was charged with “Going Armed to the Terror of the Public,” the sheriff’s office said. In Ashe County, FEMA operations were briefly put on pause in response to the threats and resumed today, the county sheriff’s office said on Facebook. “FEMA continues to support communities impacted by Helene and help survivors apply for assistance,” a FEMA spokesperson said.

If you see a White family, it says they’re looking for food,” West, going off script, said in September 2005 during NBC’s “Concert for Hurricane Relief” telethon following hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in August 2005, causing severe flooding damage to cities from New Orleans to Biloxi. Comedian and actor Mike Myers, who appeared with West on the telethon, did not know about the artist’s planned comments in advance. Myers said in a 2014 interview that he was “super proud” to stand next to West in that moment. “This moment should not even be about Kanye West and President Bush,” CNN Entertainment Correspondent Lisa Respers France said in Sunday’s episode.

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday did not commit to calling Congress back into session before the election after President Joe Biden pressed congressional leaders about potential funding shortfalls in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The president noted that the White House requested more funding for the program as Congress prepared a short-term funding bill that passed last month to avert a government shutdown. Pressed on whether he would call Congress back into session before the election, Johnson replied, "We'll be back in session immediately after the election." Johnson's comments come after Biden said in remarks at the White House last week he expects to ask Congress for a supplemental funding request for areas affected by Hurricane Helene. "The American people are disgusted by this, up with it, and so are Republicans in Congress," he said.

Lawmakers are expected to consider new sanctions against Iran, which has supported Hamas, as well as vote on resolutions expressing support for Israel's right to defend itself. A bachelor's degree has become a common requirement for landing US jobs, even those that didn't previously require one. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order opening up 92%, or roughly 65,000, of state jobs to those without college degrees. They urged more states to follow to move the economy away from a preference for college degrees, restoring a sense of fairness many Americans feel is lost. Oregon also issued a temporary order in 2022 allowing those without bachelor's degrees to work as substitute teachers. A college degree may increase your earning potential, but it may not hold the keys to the middle class for much longer.
WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - More than a dozen U.S. air marshals plan to refuse deployment to the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a group representing them, a sign of challenges facing U.S. President Joe Biden's administration as it grapples with record migrant crossings. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sought volunteers from the Federal Air Marshal Service to travel to the southwest border, but when fewer than 150 signed up in October, some were assigned, said Sonya LaBosco, executive director of the Air Marshal National Council. The air marshals are part of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a DHS subagency, and ride on U.S. airlines to guard against security threats. A lawyer for the air marshal group wrote in a Nov. 4 letter to the agency that the deployments are illegal because they involve duties outside the scope of the job. A DHS spokesperson defended the deployments, saying that marshals have had previous assignments to assist hurricane relief and that some were temporarily deployed to the border in 2019.
A Florida law caps property taxes at 3% a year for existing homebuyers. The tax bills have come as a shock for some, who may have to consider moving out of the state. Anyone who bought a Florida property in 2022 will be in the same situation next year. Corporate homebuyers are also getting hit with higher tax billsDeeply resourced, large-scale homebuyers are getting caught off guard, too. Some local governments in Texas have argued for increasing property taxes in order to finance things like hurricane relief, the Texas Tribune reported.

A double hit to its power gridPreexisting economic turmoil and blackouts came to a head this fall when Cuba’s power grid took a double hit. Increased sales to China, India and even Cuba have helped Russia ease the economic brunt of sanctions.
