BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico — Power was restored to nearly all electrical customers across Puerto Rico on Wednesday after a sweeping blackout plunged the U.S. territory into darkness on New Year’s Eve. By Wednesday afternoon, power was back up for 98% of Puerto Rico’s 1.47 million utility customers, said Luma Energy, the private company overseeing transmission and distribution of power in the archipelago. The lights went off in Puerto Rico at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, darkening almost the entire archipelago as people prepared to ring in the New Year. The island’s power grid was ravaged in September 2017 by Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm. Last month, Puerto Rico’s Energy Bureau approved an increase of 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour for residential customers from January through March, causing electric bills for the average household to jump by nearly $20, the Energy Bureau says.

CNN —After some areas of Puerto Rico welcomed the New Year in the dark amid a massive failure to the island’s power grid, service has been restored to nearly all impacted customers. The massive blackout, which began in the early hours of New Year’s Eve, highlighted the years-long issues with Puerto Rico’s crumbling power grid. The Puerto Rico Power Authority is a government-owned corporation that controls all the electricity generation, transmission and distribution properties on the island. The New Year’s Eve outage is just the latest time that Puerto Rico’s power system has faltered on a mass scale. Last year, about half of all electric customers on the island were at one point without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Ernesto, according to LUMA Energy.

CNN —A critical failure in Puerto Rico’s power grid has caused a massive blackout affecting a large part of the island, according to a post on Gov. The New Year’s Eve blackout has knocked out power for nearly 1.3 million users, or about 88% of customers, according to LUMA Energy, the Canadian-American power company responsible for power distribution and transmission on the island. The outage is just the latest time that Puerto Rico’s inconsistent power system has faltered on a mass scale. LUMA Energy took over management of the grid in 2021 from the government-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, known as PREPA. After Hurricane Ernesto in August, about half of all electric customers on the island were at one point without power, according to LUMA Energy.
