CNN —The elusive deep-water oarfish – considered to be a harbinger of bad news – was spotted yet again on the shores of Encinitas, California. “We took samples and froze the specimen awaiting further study and final preservation in the Marine Vertebrate Collection,” Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, said in the post. “Like with the previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will be able to tell us much about the biology, anatomy, genomics and life history of oarfish,” Frable said in the post. The fish was found in good condition according to the release, and it was taken in for examination and preservation to become a part of the organization’s Marine Vertebrate Collection. “It may have to do with changes in ocean conditions and increased numbers of oarfish off our coast,” Frable said.

An Orange County, California, man has been arrested in connection with acts of vandalism in which anti-Asian slurs that were spray-painted over campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Dave Min, who’s Korean American. It comes after reports of two separate incidents in which signs were spray-painted with an anti-Korean derogatory term. A video documenting the vandalism, that was posted on the Democratic candidate’s social media, shows the hate speech, written in silver paint, across a row of signs. Police said they first responded to a report of vandalism last Tuesday, when they found Min signs defaced with the offensive language. “The Huntington Beach Police Department takes vandalism seriously, particularly when it involves hate speech,” the police said in a news release last week.

A major exchange-traded fund and mutual fund manager finds the winning gold trade isn't talked about as much as the artificial intelligence trade — but maybe it should be. VanEck CEO Jan van Eck thinks the best investment this year is "the hedge against political cycles." But as of Friday, the VanEck Gold Miners ETF has started to outperform, up 31% this year. As for the AI trade, van Eck says it's "amazing" how investors refuse to give up on it. DoubleLine Capital CEO Jeffrey Gundlach said Tuesday that the Federal Reserve needs to ease policy swiftly amid the current economic slowdown, seeing a half-point interest-rate reduction this week. A quarter-point rate cut had been the consensus as recently as a week ago. But the 2-year Treasury yield was last at around 3.59%. The size of the Fed's first rate cut in years has been a point of debate on Wall Street. On the one hand, a rate cut could help boost earnings growth for companies following a period of high borrowing costs and stubborn inflation.

Longer-term investors should ignore the daily racket surrounding interest rates and focus on generating income over the next 10 years, according to New York Life economist and chief market strategist Lauren Goodwin. Where to invest: Bonds and AI The strategist posits that over the next decade, interest rates are likely to remain elevated as neither party takes on deficit spending. "So depending on the investor, what they're looking for, there is a way to balance this medium term potential for interest rate risk while still locking in higher rates." Goodwin also sees investing around AI as a smart strategy long term, with large investments in the area continuing. "But because we see not only the government and companies, but also the consumer use case for AI, we expect that investment to continue.

Mr. Ford kept their daughter at home to ensure Ms. Ford wouldn’t tell anyone in the emergency room how Robert’s injury happened. Ms. Ford, now 65, is serving a sentence of life without parole at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. Leigh Goodmark, the author of the book “Imperfect Victims,” said that self-defense law imagines two parties of equal strength, size, weight and physical capability. But where self-defense law really fails to capture a woman’s experience is around the question of imminence. West Texas oil prices climbed about 2.4% on Wednesday on a bigger-than-expected weekly drop in U.S. crude stockpiles and as a weaker U.S. dollar overshadowed signs of slower economic growth in China. On Tuesday, Brent closed at its lowest since June 14 and WTI at its lowest since June 21. A weaker U.S. dollar also helped support oil prices after it fell to a 17-week low against a basket of other major currencies. A weaker dollar can boost demand for oil by making greenback-denominated commodities like oil cheaper for holders of other currencies. Also supporting crude prices was rising geopolitical risk, said George Khoury, global head of education and research at CFI, adding that tensions in the Middle East and Europe could continue to fuel risks.

Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker introduces the all-electric off-road Ocean called the Force E during its inaugural "Product Vision Day" in Huntington Beach, California, on August 3, 2023. U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker Fisker filed for bankruptcy protection late on Monday, looking to sell its assets and restructure its debt, after succumbing to rapid cash burn to deliver its "Ocean" SUVs in the United States and Europe. "Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to operate efficiently," Fisker said in a statement early on Tuesday. The company's operating unit, Fisker Group Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, listing estimated assets of $500 million to $1 billion and liabilities of $100 million to $500 million. Fisker made over 10,000 vehicles in 2023, less than a quarter of its forecast, but delivered only about 4,700.

An offshore oil platform is seen at sunset on February 9, 2024 near Huntington Beach, California. Oil prices rose on Tuesday, extending the previous day's rally on hopes of higher seasonal fuel demand and potential U.S. crude purchases for its petroleum reserve, though gains were capped by a firmer dollar. Brent crude futures climbed 28 cents, or 0.3%, to $81.91 per barrel by 0038 GMT and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 31 cents, or 0.4%, to $78.05. "Since WTI is near its 200-day average, we expect oil prices to remain close to current levels for a while," he said. Oil prices defied the announcement of extended supply cuts from the OPEC+ alliance with brisk declines, with analysts and traders faulting certain trading strategies and the demand picture for the downturn. "I would say that what the market is going through currently is going into an oversold, technically oversold market that is pushing the prices down," he noted. The front-month Nymex WTI contract was at $73.28 per barrel, higher by 3 cents per barrel from the Tuesday settlement. While some blame the OPEC+ meeting for the drop, we believe other factors — such as the option market—have played a role," UBS strategist Giovanni Staunovo said in a Tuesday note to clients. Renewed inventory draws are needed to push oil prices higher, in our view."

Here are today's energy prices:OPEC+ members on Sunday are expected to review voluntary output cuts of 2.2 million barrels per day. Oil market analysts generally agree that the group will likely keep those cuts in place. Chinese refiners' output has also slumped, and European refiners have been slow to return from spring maintenance, which has also pressured demand, according to the investment bank.

Oil prices edge up on Middle East risk
  + stars: | 2024-02-13 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Oil prices rose slightly on Tuesday on fears Middle East tensions could disrupt supply, but uncertainty about the pace of potential U.S. interest rate cuts and the ensuing impact on fuel demand capped gains. Oil prices were near flat in Monday's trade, after gaining 6% last week. A move by the U.S. to tighten or step up enforcement of sanctions on Iran would impact oil market supplies. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is also scheduled to release its monthly oil market report on Tuesday. OPEC and its allies including Russia, known as OPEC+, will decide in March whether to extend voluntary oil production cuts in place for the first quarter.
