This is due to unprofitable EV investments, Chinese market losses, and more domestic competition. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis plan to slash thousands from their workforce in the coming months. AdvertisementBut despite that growth — and with EVs accounting for roughly 10% of US auto sales — companies not named Tesla have struggled to make their EV businesses profitable. German carmakers are losing out to Chinese EV upstarts like BYD. Analysts say inventory levels are improving at Stellantis and industry-wide as automakers react to a slower sales environment.

There are currently a handful of electric trucks for purchase in the U.S. market: the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and General Motors' GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado. The GMC Hummer and Rivian also have SUV versions, which feature similar functions as their pickup counterparts but in different forms. The SUV version is smaller and more manageable to drive than the pickup truck version. When the F-150 Lightning hit the market, it was the first "mainstream" electric truck. Read previewWhen the automotive industry started looking toward an electrified future, Detroit automakers decided to throw their hat in the ring with what they do best: Pickup trucks. Electric pickup truck pioneer Rivian has also warned of slowing growth, and Elon Musk's Tesla already appears to be offering some purchase incentives for the Cybertruck. Only four EVs sell in that range at the moment, according to Edmunds, and none of them are sold by Detroit automakers. On average, EVs sold for around $61,700 last year, $14,250 more expensive than the typical price paid for non-electric vehicles, Edmunds said. AdvertisementGM is taking another approach, pulling back on EV production as the company plans to bring more hybrids (a segment that has seen demand increase while EV demand wanes) to the North American market later this year.

The crash test highlights safety experts' concerns about faster and heavier EVs. Bigger the car, deadlier the crashSafety experts have previously raised concerns about the risks heavy vehicles and heavier EVs could bring to the roads. In the UK, safety experts say the heavier weight could cause older parking garages across the country to collapse. "There is some urgency to address this issue," Cody Stolle, Midwest Roadside Safety Facility's assistant director, told the publication.

REUTERS/Yves Herman/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 1 (Reuters) - Tesla shares (TSLA.O) fell about 2% on Friday after the highly anticipated launch of its Cybertruck left analysts concerned about the electric vehicle's steep price tag and a longer wait for significant financial payoff. Musk has said Tesla was likely to reach a production rate of roughly 250,000 Cybertrucks a year in 2025. At $235.45, Tesla was set to lose about $15 billion in market valuation on Friday. "Cybertruck is more of a 'halo' product, in our view, to attract consumers to the brand for the mainstream vehicles Model 3 and Model Y," RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan said.

[1/3] Tesla's new Cybertruck is shown on display at a Tesla store in San Diego, California, U.S., November 20, 2023. Cybertruck, Tesla's first new model in nearly four years, is critical to its reputation as a maker of innovative vehicles. "We dug our own grave with Cybertruck," Musk said last month, warning that it would take a year to 18 months to make the vehicle a significant cash flow contributor. The billionaire has said Tesla was likely to reach a production rate of roughly 250,000 Cybertrucks a year in 2025. Tesla has faced "enormous challenges in reaching volume production" with the Cybertruck because of its new technology and design, Musk said.

The more trucks Tesla can churn out of its Texas Gigafactory, the cheaper it can sell each one for. CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

Biden is running for re-election in 2024 and will likely face Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. "The only reason Biden is going to Michigan on Tuesday is because President Trump announced he is going on Wednesday," the Trump campaign said in a statement late on Friday. Trump has called for rank-and-file union workers to ignore their leaders. United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain blasted Trump earlier in the week, saying the union was "fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers." Workers on the picket lines had mixed feelings over whether Biden should visit.

The UAW on Friday invited Biden to visit workers on its picket lines, and said that it would expand its Detroit strike to parts distribution centers across the United States at General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). "It’s very rare for a president to visit strikers," said Jeremi Suri, a historian and presidential scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. The White House said the president appreciates the UAW invitation, saying Biden will continue to fight for workers, but but did not immediately commit to visiting the strikers. Biden said the automakers should "go further to ensure record corporate profits mean record contracts for the UAW," echoing sentiments by union leaders. The company delivered just 1,348 Lyriqs and 47 Hummers in the second quarter, far below expectations, in part because of issues with battery module assembly. A longer strike could help GM address and potentially resolve some of those ongoing issues in its EV and battery operations, according to Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions. "A production stoppage could allow GM to solve bottlenecks,” Fiorani said. Wedbush auto analyst Daniel Ives said the strike was "a potential nightmare situation" for GM given it comes exactly at a key period of ironing out EV issues. In addition, the UAW strike in the United States could affect the flow of critical auto parts to GM operations in Canada and Mexico, which would hamper EV production there, Rinna said.
