The binding contract — after a preliminary agreement announced in April — is the first major award to be completed under the $52.7 billion program created in 2022. In April, TSMC agreed to expand its planned investment by $25 billion to $65 billion and to add a third Arizona fab by 2030. TSMC also agreed to use its most advanced chip manufacturing technology called "A16" in Arizona.

To be sure, a Bloomberg report earlier Tuesday that the U.S. government was considering a cap on AI chip exports to certain Persian Gulf nations may also have dampened industry sentiment. Investors are sensitive to any updates on AI chip demand, given the dramatic rise in the stocks of Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and others over the past two years. Bottom line Artificial intelligence is alive and well, according to TSMC, which has emerged as the most valuable window into AI demand other than Nvidia itself. With Big Tech earnings in the coming weeks, it's particularly nice to see the AI chip trade stabilize after the ASML debacle. Jim said Thursday that AMD, which has way underperformed Nvidia, Broadcom and the broader market, is "still a bargain."

CNN —China flew a record number of fighter jets and other warplanes around Taiwan during its large-scale military drills on Monday, the island’s Defense Ministry said. No Chinese warplanes were spotted entering Taiwan’s sovereign airspace, a step that would be considered a major escalation. While not directly comparable, the spike in Chinese warplanes on Monday superseded the previous daily record in September 2023, when 103 Chinese military aircraft were detected operating around Taiwan in a 24-hour span. Typhoon Gaemi is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast Wednesday evening. The companies would each acquire 10% of shares in the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), founded by TSMC, it said. "The recent geopolitical upheavals have shown how important secured access to semiconductors is, especially for the German industry," Andreas Mundt, president of the cartel office, said in a statement. He added that both the European Union and Germany were committed to locating more semiconductor production in Europe and Germany.

The world's largest contract chipmaker was intending to build a 1-nanometre chip factory in Longtan, according to a Central News Agency report in December that quoted a Science Park Administration official. Taiwan Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua said the government would help TSMC with its land, water and power needs given that semiconductors are one of island's most important industries.
