A federal jury awarded the six ex-BART workers between $1.1 million and more than $1.5 million each, court records show. Kevin Snider, who served as lead attorney, said the workers didn’t compromise their religious convictions for their jobs. A class-action lawsuit filed in October 2022 said BART granted the vaccine religious exemption for some, but denied accommodations in every instance. Between then and February 2022, about 179 employees submitted requests for religious exemptions, and 70 were approved, the suit said. However, one in three BART employees seeking medical exemptions were granted an accommodation, according to the suit.

As long as companies report that they're feeling good about lower interest rates, stocks should rise. That's according to Bank of America, which notes that apart from that dynamic, the bar for third-quarter earnings set by Wall Street is pretty low. The analysts expect 2% earnings growth, below consensus estimates of 4% and second-quarter earnings growth of 11%. As long as companies have managed through macro headwinds and see early signs of improvement from lower rates, stocks should get rewarded," the analysts said in a Tuesday note. We started buying Home Depot shares last week as a play on housing and interest rates. Our Home Depot investment thesis is all about a pickup in housing turnover, the main driver of the home improvement retailer's sales. When rates went below 6.5% toward the end of last year, he explained, there was an immediate increase in housing activity, mortgage applications, and mortgage refinance applications. Mortgage rates with a 5% handle could be on the horizon, at least that's what Toll Brothers CEO Doug Yearley thinks. The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. The housing market is unlikely to recover for several years and affordability won't get any better unless a recession hits, according to Bank of America economists. "The US housing market is stuck, and we are not convinced it will become unstuck anytime soon," Bank of America economist Michael Gapen and others said in a Monday note. In some respects, the housing market is a victim of its own success: Buyers swarmed in after Covid hit, taking advantage of mortgage rates around 3% and even less. Bank of America does expect some moderation in regard to prices, but again not for a few years. As things stand, the NAR's housing affordability index , after rising earlier this year, tumbled in May to its lowest level since November 2023.

A federal fair-housing law prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, ethnicity, religion and other factors, like gender identity and disability. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act on April 11, 1968, days after the Rev. The law, initially focused on racial discrimination, was the linchpin of the broader Civil Rights Act of 1968 and was later expanded to include other factors. Yet complaints of discrimination remain about everything from prejudiced home appraisals to racial steering. In 2022, there were more than 33,000 fair housing complaints received by organizations across the country.
